  • Have a stockpile of old mismatched socks? Well, here are five clever and awesome ways to finally put them to good use! With almost no time and effort you can not only re-purpose those ol' socks into some great and free gear for backpacking, camping, or even household use, but get rid of that annoying stockpile once and for all. Some of the uses shown here include:
    - A homemade drink cozy to help keep your favorite beverages hot or cold.
    - A simple and effective pair of DIY ankle gaiters.
    - Free lightweight stuff sacks to keep small items organized and easy to find in your pack.
    - A soap holder / scrubber for easier washing up in the outdoors.
    - A pair of homemade wrist warmers to help your hands stay warm on those chilly evenings.

Wrist warmer idea is great! We use this in Wisconsin where temps can get down to minus 50. Wear them under gloves or mittens for double insulation. You can also wear them over a pair of thin stretchy "magic" gloves to use as driving gloves. They will keep your hands warm on a cold steering wheel but give you finger dexterity to work radio etc. Always wear wool hats, gloves, etc. Wool will keep you warm even when they get wet in snowstorms.

I have some pesky tendonitis. So I use a cut off sock as a compression tool for my elbow. I also use it as a wrist band when working. Great place to stash my carpenters pencil for easy access. Your channel has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Have a great Fathers Day!

    • @IntenseAngler

Couple of pretty clever uses there Bro! Would never have thought of the wristband idea for keeping things close at hand (bad pun, I know lol) while working... definitely going to be "borrowing" that one if ya don't mind.
Thanks for all of the support and friendship along the way man... it's hard to believe it's been so long, eh? :) Hope you have an awesome Father's Day too Brother!

I've been using socks as compression bands for years now. In fact I have an old tube sock that I think was from one of my high-school sports that I use to this day. Simply cut off the tube bit, fold in on it's self to make double layered, and put on where ails you. No need to mess with wrapping and rewraping an ace bandage especially one handed if it's a wrist that ails you.
Though I've never considered that you can easily do this in the outdoors should you get a sprain and no ace bandages around. A couple normal every day socks should do the trick. (double layered for that extra compression)

Borrow away brother. That's why we do this.

Kind of love that so many tips on your channel revolve around just one issue: keeping your coffee warm.
Btw, one of my favorite uses of old socks, fill with crystal blue cat litter and tie off the open end. If sock has a hole, tie off the end with the hole also. The crystal blue cat litter is an excellent dehumidifier and deodorizer, it's actually silicone dioxide, the same chemical use in food moisture absorbers. From what I hear it can absorb upto ten times it's weight in water, which is why it's great cat litter.
If you've got a humidity problem somewhere in your house, leaky drain, foggy car windows, damp garage, soggy gym bag, wherever you have moisture, throw your sock full of dehumidifier/deodorizer and forget about it.

    • @IntenseAngler
      @IntenseAngler  Рік тому +1

Hmm... I never thought about that until you just mentioned it. I guess keeping the ol' coffee warm is high on my priority list, haha.
That's an absolutely awesome use/tip on using the sock and cat litter combo for a dehumidifier and/or deodorizer man! I'm definitely going to be trying that one out for sure!
Thanks for not only taking the time to watch, but for passing along such an excellent tip as well my friend... it's very much appreciated!

I use the wrist warmer idea a lot in the cold when I can't wear my gloves because I need the finger dexterity. I cut the thumb hole much further back, so the sock extends down my fingers to a little past the first knuckle. I also usually triple layer the socks (and i'm using thick socks to begin with) on each hand for really bitter cold weather, especially if I'm working with metal. Coverage matters in sub-zero weather.

I would add... Put you keen kanteen or nalgene bottle in a cotton tub sock and wet it down with filtered or clean water. Hang in in a shaded place and if possible where it can be hit by wind. That will make cool down the water quite a bit through evaporative cooling within a half hour.

I used to commute to work on a bicycle all winter long whenever there wasn't ice or snow on the road and sometimes it was quite cold. No problem for most of me since I was making lots of heat, but some parts didn't get enough heat to balance the heat loss. One of those areas was my knee caps which would feel a little creaky until I added the cuffs of old wool work socks (like your gaiters) under the other layers.
