Korg modwave Tutorial

- Hi all,
I Preordered a modwave earlier this year, as I wanted to give wavetable synthesis a try.
Ended up getting it delivered to my house around a month ago, and I've been pecking away at it and digging through the manual, to build up this tutorial.
The goal here, is to slowly walk you through the various functionality on the modwave.
I'm going to start with the simple stuff, Performances/Programs/ARP/Tempo, then move into motion sequencing 2.0, cover how to add/adjust mods, FX, then review the sound design options under the Osc 1/2, Filter, and LFOs.
The idea being, you will understand the basics first, and from there, you can learn the other sections, as needed, depending on how you want to use the modwave.
Hope you find it useful!

Hey everyone,
If you are not a fan of the longform tutorial content, and looking for a faster paced quick start guide, I got you covered here: ua-cam.com/video/6vQLtLXhVIs/v-deo.html
This tutorial covers much of the same ground, just with further depth and exploration of the topics.
One general tipp for people that are not so familiar with wavetable-synths. The most important thing in WT-synthesis is to modulate the position of the wave. So for example modulate the position with an envelope ..try different intensitiy of modulation and most important ..if you got a nice envelope than CHANGE the wavetable . This is very important because in some wavetables the differences of the single waves (within the wavetable) are just subtle and in other wavtables the changes are drastic. Have fun !
I will be trying out your tips, thanks for sharing!
Omg 6days ago this was posted!!! Getting my first synth (friend and I are splitting it ;-) but you just save so much of our time!!!! You’re an Angel of musical proportions!!!
Have fun, glad to hear that the video was useful!
I'll be shooting more of it soon =)
0:18 "Thankfully I didn't spill beer into the synth" ha ha yep we have all been there! Turns out they are not waterproof, who knew!
Thanks for the tutorial! Subbed
Yeah I'm kinda OCD about keeping liquids off the table if I got synth gear on it, so knock on wood I haven't given any of them a bath... yet...
Thx Simon!
@@NickCapron some of my synths have guttering :-)
@@NickCapron Cool that you did it without the synth editor… Great tutorial !
@@WyattLite-n-inn thank you! =)
@@NickCapron Do you generally program it entirely on board or do you also use the desktop editor?
Very nice. Congrats man!!!
Great video. Just got mine hooked up tonight - been waiting for this synth for over a year and I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with it.
Thx Dylan, been enjoying building some patches over the last few weeks on it, it's a fun synth for sure.
@@NickCapron I've spent the past three days doing basically nothing but that - great tool for pad design especially from what I've found.
@@DylanDekk haha too funny, I laugh as everytime I sit down with the thing and try to patch, I've only made pad sounds, beyond one bass patch thus far.
Excellent, excellent tutorial! Thank you.
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial for an EXCELLENT synthesizer. Thank you 😊
Thank you!
Brilliant, thanks Nick that's really saved me a lot of time studying the manual. My Modwave arrived yesterday and I'm patching (sorry programming) thanks to this.
Awesome, that was totally my goal with this Video, so I'm glad it worked for you!
thank you! finally digging in
No problem, hope you have fun with it!
you are doing gods work my man!
Haha I wouldn't go that far but I'm glad you found it useful!
Wow, thank you so much!
NP, enjoy the modwave, I've been neglecting it but I need to get more action in with it when I get the chance
Great video ! 🙂 Thank you very much. Very useful, I just bought a Modwave,... 🙂
Great tutorial! - Clears up a lot of details I can't seem to find in the manual.
Thank you PLP CA! I need to get it out again soon.
@@NickCapron Hey Nick,
How did you access the simple one- shot sound samples? (cannons, dog bark, helicopter, etc?
Thanks!
Nevermind, I found them. Thanks.
Sounds like it needs more cowbell... Hope the engineers at Korg gave it the ability to deliver in such areas...
I have just bought one and this is a tutorial i can understand - baffled after looking at some others reviews !! cheers
Thx Paul!
Hey Nick, awesome! Is there a way to do a full factory reset (to get rid of sounds and system settings of the first owner)? Thanks.
Thanks for this lesson! Is there anyway I can have the synth play a loop continously by itself? I need to be able to play drums as the synth is hammering awat 😊
Just bought one this is a great tutorial this will save a load of time going thru manual . I better being shown anyway thanks again buddy
I was just curious, how do you factory reset the Modwave? Bought a used one, and I’d like to restore it to factory settings.
how can the keyboard be transposed by octaves (moved up or down)?
You look like a more jolly Ryan Reynolds.
Haha, thx Matt, I will take it =)
Is it possible to apply different types of morphing to each mod knob [ for a single patch ] - in the sequencer? I guess so, if you could change the morph type with a mod knob, and assign another mod knob to morph position, then rexcord changing the morph position.
Avi, that's a cool idea, I am going to try it and get back to you!
Just tried to add a mod, with the OSC1 morph type set as the destination...
Unfortunately the modwave is telling me that parameter can't be modulated
@@NickCapron shoot thanks for trying though!
I'll have to experiment with potential workarounds later on
@@AviPFine no problem at all! I'm GUESSING(haven't confirmed it yet) that the mods can only be assigned against numerical values.
At least last night, if I tried to assign a mod to any text value parameter (such as the morph type), it wouldn't work.
If I stumble across a work around, I will let you know!
@@NickCapron yeah, tried it too. guess its a no go, short of modulating it live, then
Hi, i want to do dungeon Synth (black metal) and jazz, obscure most, what should I get modwave or wavestate
Rivii, let me do some research and get back to you.
Do you have any examples of sounds you are trying to emulate, otherwise I'll do some googling to find some examples myself =)
@@NickCapron yes yes look this one, ua-cam.com/video/xkPtVH4xB88/v-deo.html
@@rivii2577 Thx, I'm working on this over the last week, trying to make my own dungeon synth like song just using just the modwave, working on building up a set list of sounds from scratch, so might be a little bit!
I would rather use one of the Sonicware (Liven) thingies or/with Microfreak.
@@NickCapron After checking out that track real quick I would say your money would be best spent on a good hardware sampler and some sort of multi-effects unit. That way you can arrange your whole track in that device as well as sound design and resample. especially if you want to get that lo-fi tape sound without actually recording to tape.
I would take a look at the Digitakt, MPC Live, Roland SP404 II, type samplers and then for multi-effects an Eventide H9 or Empress Zoia.
With a good effects unit and a sampler you can go really far. especially in this genre.
Unless of course you are playing in a band and not composing solo, then its a different story.
can you load own recorded samples?
Yup!

release the burp edit
haha I probably still have the clip somewhere, maybe I'll have to sample it and throw it into something randomly for fun
I’m so
….high right now?
