    Excellent video. I bought the Modwave for my teenage son a few weeks back as he said he wanted something portable that he could dive into learning synthesis; you know, "baby's first synthesizer" and all that. Jeez, I had no idea the Modwave was insanely deep. Nice bit of easily accessible sparkle & shine to take a dip in the shallow end and noodle about on. But I tore the proverbial hood off this thing once I printed up the manual. Wow. Unbelievably deep in an incredible number of ways. I hooked this up to my Hydrasynth and mapped the poly aftertouch to several parameters on the Modwave. So lively and performance oriented. This Wave and Motion Sequencing tech is killer and I think Korg has just given us a glimpse of its future potential here.

  • @unclemick-synths
    @unclemick-synths 2 роки тому +1

    You are really selling me on the ModWave - I didn't realize that the sequencer is on a par with modular analogue sequencing. I know that analogue sequencer modules themselves usually don't actually transpose - the CV summing to enable transposition occurs elsewhere - but the lack of transposition in digital step sequencers (e.g. Roland Boutique JP-08) has been a fail that has annoyed me enormously for decades.

    • @OscillatorSink

      The whole of the Modwave feels *very* "modular". I don't know if you've seen my video about the envelopes on the Modwave, but you'll see the same philosophy happening there. The Mod Matrix has, hundreds of slots, each with what is functionally a VCA optionally controlled by another parameter, it's all very modular.

    thanks for this video. You say that if someone needs a "traditional" sequencer to build songs it would probably be better to resource to an external one. Could you please suggest one or a few cheap entry level sequencers that can do the job, maybe also adding a drum machine feature? I was thrown off by the Modwave when I found out that its sequencer is a "per note" one.

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  9 місяців тому +1

      If you want a keyboard involved, the Keystep Pro is my default answer. That does melodic and drum sequencing (but isn't a drum machine itself).
      If you want a drum machine that also does sequencing of melodic stuff, then I guess you're looking at something like a Digitakt, but that's a step up in cost and complexity maybe.

    Can you tell me if it is possible to have the manually played notes only trigger exactly in synch with a midi clock. For example, lets say you have an 1/8 note set on the Modwave sequencer. To my ears, it sounds like the keys sound on keypress, regardless to whether the sequencer is set to note sync.
    The amplifier seems to trigger on keypress, and I have not found a way (yet) to have the amp envelope synch up with the midi clock.
    On my other synth with a sequencer, the Vermona '14, the VCA only opens on the midi clock clicks, (and a keypress), so a late manual note will only open on the midi synched VCA., VCF, which sounds better.
    When I compare the two, as the '14 is mono, I set the Modwave to mono and I find the amplifier opens at keypress...still looking to sync the amp envelope to midi clock.
    Basically it would be an AND operation:
    If keypress is on, AND MIDI trigger is hit, then open amp envelope (on the modwave)

    Amazing stuff! Do you have a “Modwave for dummies” series? I still can’t get modwave into a fast workflow. Like, I just want to grab a single parameter and modulate it. I failed at using LFOs and Envelops to change simple parameters like Oscillator 2 Level. (Wub Bass)

      I don't have exactly that, but I do have this video: ua-cam.com/video/n_jPshKk7w0/v-deo.html where I start from an initialized patch and build up a finished patch from scratch which might show you the ropes.
      Also this video: ua-cam.com/video/n_jPshKk7w0/v-deo.html specifically goes into the way that the envelopes work.

    Great video👍. I'll definitely watch out for the rest of them. The ModWave is the synth that's most interesting for me right now. I'm curious as to whether it is "wind synth friendly" so I could play it from my Roland AE-30. Does it accept breath control?

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  2 роки тому

      The Mod Matrix is super comprehensive. Aftertouch (and poly aftertouch) are available as sources, breath control isn't an explicit source, but you can arbitrarily apply any CC number as a mod source, so I guess you just point CC 2 at whatever you wanted.

    • @unclemick-synths
      @unclemick-synths 2 роки тому

      @@OscillatorSink Thanks! Sounds like it has potential then beyond just keyboard control. The AE-30 lets me pick which CCs it uses for different controls (besides breath it has 2-axis motion control and a pressure sensitive thumb pad).

    • @OscillatorSink
      @OscillatorSink  2 роки тому

      @@unclemick-synths I'm pretty sure you can control the Modwave's x/y pad using incoming CC (18 and 19 - I just checked the manual!) so that could be a great starting point for exploring a lot of the pre existing patches!

    • @unclemick-synths
      @unclemick-synths 2 роки тому

      @@OscillatorSink that's cool - the AE-30's elevation and tilt sensors would be ideal for controlling the x/y. The main question is how tightly bound the architecture is to the envelopes. I have found that Mono mode with legato (to avoid envelope re-triggering with pitch change) and aftertouch (to override the envelope sustain) is essential for wind synth control.

      Have you followed the instructions in the manual? You go into record mode by pressing rec+pitch, then press the root note that you're sequencing relative to. After that you have to press enter to start step sequencing (sounds like this is the step you're missing perhaps?) - you'll get feedback on the screen to show that the notes are being entered. Press Rec again once you're done. Personally I ususlly program the sequence in with the value knob (which is what I do in this series).
