- When the Modwave was released people, perhaps understandably, focused primarily on the "Wave" part of the name - wavetables are great and I'm pleased to have seen them make such a comeback in hardware synths lately.
That said, for me it's the "Mod" part of the name that is most exciting because the various modulation sources, how they can interact with each other and the incredibly generous mod matrix invite you to be extremely creative with sound design on the Modwave. There are not many synths where I feel like I need a whole video to just talk about the envelopes - but with the Modwave I do!
In this video I'll talk about using the "Curves" to fine tune the envelope response and the move onto how we can use triggers with the envelopes to create sequences, generative patches and complex envelopes that move far beyond a simple 4-stage ADSR

There's a little mathematical aside I wanted to add to this excellent video. If an envelope is triggering based on a threshold applied to a random step waveform, then assuming it requires an ascending edge to trigger it, you need to multiply the pre and post edge probabilities to get the probability of a trigger. Examples:
Threshold at 50% means it will trigger when the value goes from 0.5 - the chance of this is 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4
Threshold at 75% means it will trigger when the value goes from 0.75 - the chance of this is 3/4 x 1/4 = 3/16
Yes! With a little thought you can treat that parameter as a kind of "step probability" in that setting.

hydrasynth (which I'm currently learning) has some similar envelope crafting granularity.. not the sub zero sustain though...and not an envelope as a trigger source for a second (or third) one, though the hydrasynth envelopes have delay (and hold) so I guess you could use that to control the timing of a second envelope. anyway it's all cool thanks for the vid!

Almost picked up the modwave ended up with the Hydrasynth, it was a hard choice. While not everything is transferable I definitely picked up a few tips that’ll use, might have to go back and watch some of your other modwave videos to see what I can learn.
They're both lovely synths with different takes on similar ideas. I must say I'm jealous of the Hydra's aftertouch sometimes!
@@OscillatorSink space being a concern I have the module. I know I'm in good company wishing Korg would release keybordless versions of their "digital trinity"...I'm sure they'd move units. wonder what the considerations are for not...

@@maarzt it's possible to mod the modwave and wavestate. I turned both of mine into modules. The key board is attached by a easily removable ribbon cable then used a Japanese pull saw to cut the rest of what was left off.

I really enjoyed this great video! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. You mentioned you'll be dedicating a video to the sequencer. Do you think you'll be doing that by capturing the editor/librarian software window, or by using the camera view, or maybe some combination?
I haven't even installed the editor, but I can recognise a good suggestion when I see it. I'll be working on the hardware as that's by far my preference, but if the software can compliment the presentation by showing an overview of the state of the sequencer then I might have that on screen at times.
@@OscillatorSink Seeing your familiarity with the hardware and the speed at which you find the settings you need, it looks like you're navigating faster than I can by using the hardware and editor in conjunction. I'm sure it's a muscle memory thing, which is an advantage of having avoided the editor. I haven't played around much with the sequencer yet, but I think the editor will make it clearer to present.
@@gazzar67 there are probably some tasks I could do faster on the editor when it comes to the Modwave honestly - the "value" knob puts in a lot of work on this synth, but I prefer the focus of hardware only. I can say conclusively though, that if an editor for the opsix existed that it'd slow me down compared to the hardware - that's partly familiarity but mostly a testament to the UX on the hardware - it's very slick.
@@OscillatorSink I did a test to see what was faster for me. Editing a patch from the front panel of Modwave, or editing from the software. Hands down I am faster from editing from the synth. Muscle memory as you say. Certain things I have to do from software, like adding custom wavetables for example.
I like turning my Sequence tracks into envelopes as well. I find you can get really really slow modulations this way! I which each sequence track had its own dedicated timing track as well!

I copied these sounds into my modwave just to work from there and use other sounds etc.
Id love if you expanded this concept into making drum sequences on modwave, or even having drum sounds, combined with synth leads .
Im trying to set up a kick / snare / hi hat semi-complex pattern happen, simultaneous to a solid [un-chopped up] synth lead. wow it still seems impossible, but from hearing different factory samples i know it should be possible to do. Even if it means using wavetables and not being able to do it with the multisamples, I still want to try!

I don't think it's strange, but I would watch as many demos of them actually in use (or better yet try both) before you make the leap either way.
Speaking of the native versions, do you think the modwave and wavestate are different enough to have both? It seems diminishing returns if my main purpose is to make nice ambient pads with lost (and lots) of reverb and delay. But the architecture is quite different - especially on the software so Im leaning towards getting the modwave native as well. Any thoughts? thx
Can you assign the sequencer to the frequency or pitch of the oscillators and at the same time assign the sequencer to the attack and release of the envelopes, creating pitch and time variances in order to mimick pitch and time inconsistencies of 80s vintage analog synths?
Sure, although there's actually a setting in the performance menu to automatically do that for pitch, and I'd probably favour an LFO over the sequencer for that job. So yes, it can be done, but it's probably easier than you're thinking.

Thank you for sharing all of the Modwave tutorials, they have been really helpful. Do you happen to know how the same retriggering principles can apply to drum samples? I have been trying to deconstruct the rhythm presets that use drums but I have had no success. The envelope tricks you showcase here seem to work on everything but the single hit drum samples on the Modwave. Any ideas?
I don't believe they do. I believe off the top of my head that the rhythm presets make use of looping samples rather than re triggering, but I had to send the modwave back to Korg as it was on loan, so I can't check, sorry.

So, I hadn't worked out how to do it until you asked this question and the hack suddenly came to me.
It's easier to explain with a single envelope (and not on the amp envelope. If you set the envelope trigger source to be itself, set the threshold to be -1 then set the sustain of that envelope to -2, it'll loop when the decay portion ends. Obviously this means you can't have a hold/sustain part of the envelope, but still lets you do that West Coast stuff when you modulate the attack and decay.
only the Waldorf Microwave XT seems to have more sophisticated envelopes pissibilities
not specifically related to envelopes but i was wondering if you have a "hack" to get more octave spread out of the Modwave to lets say have 4 different octaves on layer A alone. I know each oscillator can be adjusted but I would like to go wider. I looked into the wavetable modifier but I can't find one that would multiply the wave like 2x or 4x, etc. I've tried looking into unison settings but the detune amount wont let you go to an octave (I think its limited to 200ct). I tried the arpegiator but I can't find a setting like chord trigger that I could set up with octaves... Let me know if you know have a workaround! Would make for a nice video :)
I haven't messed with it much but there is the Program/Performance Note Count and Program/Performance Voice Count modulation sources, which I think you might be able to do something with alongside unison mode maybe? Might not work properly in a polyphonic context though. There's also the "Slope" parameter in the Pitch menu to explore - might not do exactly what you want, but it's worth checking out (if you haven't looked, the default is 1.0, which is a semi-tone per key, like normal, but you can spread, compress or even reverse the keyboard with that - it's per-layer too).

They are both wavetable synths, so they belong to the same family, but they have their differences.
