- Machine was an American funk disco group, formed by August Darnell in 1977. The group is most remembered today for their 1979 disco hit, "There But for the Grace of God Go I". The group disbanded in the early 1980s, and Darnell went on to form Kid Creole and the Coconuts.

Lyrics
Carlos and Carmen Vidal just had a child
A lovely girl with a crooked smile
Now they gotta split 'cause the Bronx ain't fit
For a kid to grow up in
Let's find a place they say, somewhere far away
With no blacks, no Jews and no gays
Chorus:
There but for the grace of God go I
Poppy and the family left the dirty streets
To find a quiet place overseas
And year after year the kid has to hear
The do's the don'ts and the dears
And when she's ten years old she digs that rock 'n' roll
But Poppy bans it from home
Chorus
Baby, she turns out to be a natural freak
Popping pills and smoking weed
And when she's sweet sixteen she packs her things and leaves
With a man she met on the street
Carmen starts to bawl, bangs her head to the wall
Too much love is worse than none at all
Chorus

I’m 25 years old but I’m such an old soul. All of the music I listen to, the books I read, the movies I watch are from the past. I was born at the wrong time!
Me to old old soul 89”
So was i😊
You're lucky to have been born at a time when all these gems are readily available and you have EXCELLENT TASTE.
At 63 years I still get up and dance to this song
Me too. Fifty-eight years old!🎶🕺💃
62 and still love this song... where does time go
This is one of the Best Disco Songs ever made!!!
Yeah boy, Trax in Cleveland on Sun night! Timeless.
true
Yeah!
Lots of good memories
EVER!!!
One of the unheard classics from the disco period if you've found this tune and love it you're a true disco fan!
They played this in the 90s in Los Angeles radio. Haven't heard it since in mainstream stations.
Unheard?? It was national #1 for about two weeks . Friends of mine who grew up in Queens NYC 😊. Knew that they made it when they song got played leading in commercials on the NFL games
@@howardcampbell6796 honey it was 77 on the billboard chart hot 100...it was never a number 1
true
Unheard? A classic!!!
Fuck Me Dead!!!! I remember dancing to this Mega massive track at Paradise Garage and Studio 54 back in 79!! Yes bitches I was there!!!
This isn't racist?
As someone that loves house music, I have an endearing appreciation for this disco tune.
This is totally a New York jam played at studio 54 and the lime light. I love those house disco classics .
Don't forget xenon's
Tia Atwell 👍
Ms.Newell?
And the Garage 👍🏽
i wish my parents would have took me to studio 54 and left me a a 9 year old gay
Viva la studio 54. Party never died. Can't stop stomping my feet!
DISCO DOES NOT GET OLD .
I heard this song for the first time at the original Warehouse on Jefferson St. Frankie Knuckles was jamming, it was 1982 and I was 15 yrs old. The place was lit and I thought I'd found a piece of heaven.
I was there with ya @14......lol
Its a sad but very true song I heard it when I was 15 too in 79 been loving it since.
I'm telling your Mom.
Frankie is the best DJ all time !
It was heaven Sis. Warehouse, Power Plant, Sauer's. Cant remember 1 fight at any of them. And we got to see, hear, experience, and live it. 😎
Still sounds fresh today. The same old handful of corny disco "classics" get played to death on radio while those of us who were there back in the day know about all these truly awesome timeless classics- the real disco cream
YOU JUST HIT THAT ONE OUT THE BALLPARK TRUTH TO BE TOLD AMEN! !!!!
Moutton Noir, you hit it right on the head. While mainstream America THOUGHT John Travolta walked on water, we in the club scene laughed our asses off cause it was a joke. Thanks for your comment.
Yes indeed
Thank God for UA-cam
That’s ok .. let the corny people have the Bee Gees
A killer song, especially for the line, "lets find a place they say/far away/with no Blacks, no Jews and no Gays." When we heard this in the (gay) club for the first time, everyone laughed and went, 'WHOAAAAA!!" Because we recognized the truth of it, and could dance to it even while understanding the sentiment. This song works. If I were still a dj today, I'd play it: it's got syncopation, rhythm, beat and timing and it just builds to a climax (unlike so much music today).
+mcbrion1951 Sorry, it's "SlayD5000" who has as many of the original 12" as I do. I subscribe to his channel strictly for that reason. I'll ask him if he has the original 12" with the extended intro.
+mcbrion1951 Why do you continue to misuse the term 'gay' to describe homosexual males?
May I touch you, my friend?
+Khultan because gays shall describe themselves NOT you! Get over it!
Let Khultan be. He has the right to his thoughts.
Oh my God I love this song! I remember being a kid dancing to this cleaning the house every Saturday morning. I still rock this song in my car at full volume! Why....because it was put here but for the grace of God!
Yo isn't this racist?
This song is as relevant today as back in the day!🤔😉
In the day ???? Think you mean 1978...
Absolutely!
@@irishcladdagh3
To some they only hear notes, not themes.
You are wise, may it be so forever.
What a song. Pure magic back in the day. Lyrics still relevant today. Bass pounds right down to your soul.
I was born in 1998 and I grew up listening to this song and this type of music . I thank my dad for showing me music like this. This song will always be one of my favorites.

Great great song still relevant great dance song!
Disco music was so exciting. We used to have so much fun dancing and laughing.
just great music to dance to
+DaOrigTruthSeeker It sure was, and we sure did, didn't we?!? People who diss disco seem not to understand it was a dance medium, but it had some serious lyrics in it (like this song)! This guy is part of the New York Latin scene, part of the same contingent that featured Dr. Buzzard's legendary song, "Cherchez La Femme." Anything that sounded even remotely Latin probably had August Darnell, Corey Daye or one or another of the members of the Latin scene. They were FIERCE, but nobody knew their names, because they recorded under names like Machine, Dr. Buzzard's Savannah Band, Gitchie Dan, Kid Creole, and other names. Disco had "breaks" in it like no other medium. The instrumental section would take off like a bat out of hell and not let up until the vocalist(s) came back in. ZERO energy lag in the good songs.
Corey Day - Green Light. Loved that song as well as Cherchez La Femme. mcbrion1951 your described it well. You understood and I'm sure you were in the thick of it. A great period for dance music...especially music when you had a partner...THAT was synchronicity.
DaOrigTruthSeeker OMG I AGREE WITH YOU ALL THE WAY 4SURE! ! GREAT MEMORIES WOW! ! !
You kidding, dancing maybe but our laughter lips were well around it!
Another good song from that era
The first time I heard this song, it was like an out-of-body experience. It felt like my soul left its shell and floated above the crowd on the dance floor. Those were truly magical days.

Disco for life! Big chune!
If this doesn't get your motor running, nothing will!!!!!
This song was the national anthem for Disco & the reality & sign of the times regarding interracial relationships during the Disco era. The video is from Sylvester's "You Make me Feel, Mighty Real". This jammy was very popular during the disco scene especially at Studio 54, Palladium, Garage, Red Parrot, Bonds, to name a few. If you could hustle you had the ladies"
Brings back memories of Great & Decadent times of Dances & Spicy Romances.
Peace 2 ya

I'm black and remember hearing this for the first time. I remember gasping when they said that line. 40 yrs. later, it's still a killer song!
That's how some Hispanics are, even the ones that look Black themselves.
The Winter of 1978....early 1979 were a very good time for dance music. You could hear the change that was coming in the new decade from these classics.
I don’t care where I am, this song comes on, I jump up and start dancing. One of the greatest disco songs ever made!

How many of them still live to remember it if they weren't caught to HIV but then it wasn't the Hiv that killed them rather than the drug AZT, that was used before hand on cancer patients that promoted cancers and taken off the shelves but used in HIV to solve the problem the virus was originally invented for.
I was a 9 yr old kid when this song came out my family in Brooklyn New York used play it all the time awesome classic music
Still relevant in 2016. Ask yourself how many 2016 songs (especially dance/pop) will be relevant 37 years from now?

Oh I definitely remember this song pumpin' on people's radios in those back-in-the-day summers when I was a kid.
The version that was released and played on the radio had lyrics that were "cleaned up" for radio play...so when they say: "...with no blacks no jews or no gays...", the radio version was : "...where only upper class people stay...".
