3/5 of my lot don't need their nails done but my oldies nails have to be clipped as the claws will grow into their pads! Sometimes it's a slow process other times l get all 4 feet done, depends on my cats' mood. And thankfully that barbaric declawing is banned in the UK!
Long ago, best advice I got was to leave them one claw unclipped at each clipping. Seems she usually prefers me not to clip her dewclaws unless too long. Have tried all kinds of ways to make this claw clipping much easier. Usually not much success. She lets me know her claws need a trimming when she starts getting to close in certain places of our home and starts swiping when I walk by. That is her communications to me. Have been trying different cat clippers. The grocery store ones seem to splinter her nails. Petco $7 clippers that look kind of like upgraded pet grocery store pet clippers much better. Today, just tried her on new $10 Petco cat claw 'clippers'. Seemed much easier for me to get each claw on and quick clip. She tends to always pull back&fight a lot. Today some of this as I expected. Each claw clipped quicker and no 'splinting' or 'fraying'. Not sure if I have been all along cutting at wrong angles? She is in my lap now. A few pet herbal relaxing-calming drops and some you tube cat music and she will be out for her long afternoon nap. Makes up for the claw clipping trauma-drama.
i’ve never had to clip my cats nails before. But, two of them are the same age as me (17) and they’re getting to that point where they can’t keep them as short as they should be anymore. Wish me luck as this will be the first time I’ve ever cut cats nails before. 4/5 of my cats had their front claws removed unfortunately, I got them all when I was young and my mother had it done under her wish. With our newest cat I was able to convince her to leave his claws alone and it was a success. Please, don’t declaw your cats. It’s horrible. If you can’t handle their nails, you just aren’t suited for a cat in a first place.
The reason I am on this video is that one of my cats is older and less sedentary than he used to be. Never had to trim his nails before but I think I will have to now. His front claws are not a concern because he still regularly scratches them on the wooden pallet we have in the garden but his back claws are overgrown and always out so it's definitely time to trim. For sure a cats back claws will always grow out faster than the front because they have less of an instinct for sharpening them and taking care of them.
I bought the special cat claw trimmers with the supposed guide that stops you cutting too close to the vein or whatever. when I got it home it didn't come with instructions...so, pretty useless. I chose YOUR video because it clearly depicted the ones with the pull out metal guide. But you omitted to even mention how you use that guide to stop going to deep down the claw.
I have a stray kitten, around 4 months old - her nails weren’t quite long enough to cause her pain but I wanted to start clipping young to avoid future problems. Successfully did so today despite all the wiggling. No blood from either of us.
WOW! Thank you for the short, yet thorough video!! Got a 10 week old black kitten last week & am covered in scratches & little punctures... Time to trim them claws! Wish me luck !! 😂
Anyone afraid to do this, try using oven gloves. I got mine from QVC. I used them and he tried biting and scratching at first and I didn’t feel a thing. After a while I think he wanted to go to sleep. If you are relaxed they are more relaxed as well. Happy trimming !!!!
My cat is a rescue from the streets that I got when she was only a few months old. She is extremely skittish around everyone other than me, which makes it really hard to trim her nails. I have to be the one to hold her, as she will not allow anyone else to do so and barely allows me to as it is. Its hard to get her in a good position and even when we do, she jerks her paw back when the clipper touch her nails, making us hesitate out of fear of hurting her. Even as a kitten its surprising how strong she can be! I’ve tried the burrito method, but it just stresses her out more. I’ve had to resort to the vet but I want to be able to do this reliably at home.
I tried my first time trimming my cat nails when he lay down on my table looking for attentions. First I clean his ears and he got so relaxed. Then trim nails. He is fine with it.
My 5 week-old kitten still has blue eyes, but I can already see he will look exactly like this one by next year. Hopefully he’ll be just as well behaved when getting his nails trimmed, but I doubt it.
I am a new kitten owner. A friend says you only need to trim the front paws every 2 weeks to deter them from climbing and tearing up furniture . He says he only trims the back paws every month or 2. Our kitten is hard to hold still, so I am anxious to do this as quickly and with as little effort as possible. He also said to give them treats when it is done.
Bill Zardus hey! I’m a new kitten owner too! I got my cat when she was maybe 1 month and started trimming her nails around 3month mark, she’s now 4months. I do it while she’s asleep and she barely notices and even so I just give her a treat after. Not all cats are the same though
@@dairaperez1516 How easy that is, probably depends on the type of cat you have. We have a Russian Blue and it is hard enough to just use a lint roller to get the hair off him. As soon as he sees it, it's off to the races. He is CONSTANTLY shedding. It's amazing how much hair a skinny 9 lb cat can produce constantly. I had to line all the screens on our screened porch with a metal lath that I got from Home Depot to protect them from being ripped to shreds. When the pandemic is over we are going to find someone to do his nails. WRZ 2020-07-13
Hi I appreciate the way you explain how to cut a cats claw but I am more of a visual type of person I would have to see how you would do it in order to try to do it to mines because just because you say don’t go into tight I wouldn’t know how far in a half hour out even if I do see the skin on the knees I just feel a little more at ease to have a reference point to gauge the length of the nail due to the fact that my cat has very long nails
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the girl at 1:58 is doing it wrong. I was told by a veterenarian that you shouldn't hold scissors like that. You shold hold them horizontally, like if you're cutting your own nails with scissors
That is true if you’re cutting them with nail clippers designed for humans (although I think it’s actually the opposite, you’re supposed to hold them vertically). The one used in the video is designed specifically for cats. I got a pair almost identical and I specifically asked about how I was supposed to hold it. The inside is designed to curve in a certain way that you can hold it front, back, up, down, sideways, any which way and still cut the cats nails with no harm done to the cat in any way. They’re much more user friendly.
Wow, my cat did really good for the first time. I was able to do it by myself and she just let me cut her nails. I used nail clippers-- they worked alright but I wouldn't mind getting actual cat clippers. designed for cats. She was a happy girl afterwards, probably should have started doing this years ago. I could tell they were starting to bother her. Plus everytime she walks on my bed-- she drags the sheets and blankets with her. She was like velcro. Should I do the back claws also, or just leave them be? They're kinda long too.
We use a mixture of most of the tips & eventually manage to get the task done but oh the noise... You would not believe the volume a tiny 2.5kg Tonkinese can make. She will sit & allow it but even before the clippers have made contact with her claws, it sounds like a murder is occurring, then when it actually begins😾... I think I’m the one that needs a cuddle and a treat once it’s over 🤪 Thanks for wonderful advice as always
Make sure the cat has smelled the nail clippers furst and perhaps marked them. Try to have them in a really relaxed state, sometimes I start with a few treats just for this and do just a few at a time and get everything done within the next week. She was a stray and we got her at a year old.
I just cut my cat's nails for the first time right now and he mostly didn't mind he just sat on my lap and let me do it hopefully he's feeling a bit better since they were incredibly long and sharp like daggers
I got my cat when he was 15 months old and he turned into a beast when I took him to the pet store to get his nails cut. Vet recommended gaba. Now I give him that and it knocks him out the only way I cut his nails
Septic powder is for “preventing” bleeding…it’s specifically used to hopefully stop bleeding once it starts. You’ll find out the hard way if your cat has a blood clotting issue…
Great video, I just came here looking to figure out how to clip my kittens claws, and thankyou for the advice, but what the actual f* Declawing!!! I didn't know that was even a thing, how could anyone think that's an OK thing to do, The mind boggles at the absolute arseholery of some people.
tried cutting a stray cat's nails for the first time with just a human nail clipper because that's all i had, they kept refusing to be put on their back, hiding their paws, so it was a lot of maneuvering and repeated attempts, but managed to get all four paws done eventually, and no bleeding thank God. i was so scared but i think i'll get a scratcher so she can file her nails now herself
I touched my cats paws and practiced showing his claws and gave him treats after. Trimming his nails for first time on Tuesday, wish me luck. At least he was calm on letting me hold his paws
Works better when they are sleeping. About a month I adopted 2 kitties (5months) one spicy and semi mild. Semi mild was done by vet. The spicy one Kali, while sleeping. Wow, I f-ing nervous.
I did my cat's front claws but he was swinging when I tried the back feet. I'm giving him lots of treats, and later I tried wrapping him but he was very distressed so I stopped.
How I trim my fur babies nails and without pain! I pay nearly £90 a month for her insurance, her training because she’s a service animal and a vet package that includes free check ups, all her injections, flea and worming stuff every month, any operations she might have to have, as many appointments as she needs for other things that includes her being bathed even though she’s happy to bathe herself if she hears any running water because she’s obsessed with it and cut her nails ever two/three weeks. That’s how I cut my cats nails easily and without any pain! She trained to help me and she atomically protects me from anything and anyone she thinks is about to cause harm to me or her, but I’m not willing to risk half my face or losing a finger trying to cut her claws myself when what i pay every month includes as many nail cuttings as she needs! XoX
My cat likes his back feet to be rubbed and spreads them easy so I can clip them. But he really doesn’t like his front paws touched or held. He just pulls them away like “no don’t touch me bro”. I would give him cat nip but he’s actually pretty violent when hopped up on the nip.
I had no idea this was a thing until my sister was thinking we were weird for not trimming cat claws. Is it even worth it to trim their claws? What's the point? I would think they would still be able to do damage to furniture and what not, and cats just stratch posts and things anyway which wears down or helps shed their claws. My brother has 7 cats and that would be 126 claws to trim. Only thing crazier than that is that my brother has 7 cats.
I want to emphasize 1 to 2 mm is Just the sharp tip. Think of it as the tiny sharp pointy part that gets caught on the pillow when they can't fully retract the claw. Mine is a Drama Queen and I'm always afraid the law will be called when the equipment comes out. Do Not get cheap nail clippers as they might crush not cleanly cut off. Also, securely wrap your cat in a nice, fluffy towel - have a thick towel or jacket on your body just in case - and if your cat fights tooth and claw let them go as a cat bite can send you to the hospital. I do my work on my lap or coffeetable. When the drama gets ramping up I do big mushy kisses while clipping then let them go to calm down. It can take a day or two, but I have 4 and when one goes off they all get nervous. Best of luck and repeat clipping will start a conditioning. My neighbors can attest to my cats conditioning me to needing calming tea after nail clipping. They have never bitten me, either.
really? my kitties don’t care at all. pablo and picasso are both 5 months and i play with their paws a lot just so it’s less stressful for them. they don’t really claw anything so their nails get long and because they’re so docile i can cut their nails basically whenever by myself. of course it’s a little stressful and i do it over a few sessions with some treats but they’re absolutely amazing
Yes it is especially if they don’t really move that much and are lazy or don’t have any scratch toys like scratch posts or trees for them to file down their own nails. Because if they become to long then it starts to become painful and difficult for them to walk. So it best to check their nails every week to make sure they’ve not over grown or one has broken and is digging into their feet/paws. X
ReZo DriZzLe YT Declawing is generally regarded as bad because declawing removes the first bone in a cat’s toe. It is a painful operation, and a painful recovery. Often, declawing results in fear and aggression and biting due to the loss of a natural defense mechanism. Declawing is bad, trimming nails is good.
I feel like a file would honestly be better. Same goes for human nails. If they are in anyway brittle or prone to splitting/hangnails then cutting them often puts undue pressure on them. A electric file made for cats that has a safety guard or something sounds far better. I've trimmed in the past and am always scared I am cutting down too low, but if it's not enough either, then it makes no difference almost. if anything, trimming can make the nails sharper if you didn't cut down enough, so it's hard to find that balance. Filing would round out the sharp end so that even if it's on the longer side, it's still harder to penetrate with since it's no longer sharp.

first time clipping my kitties nails… he fell asleep while i was doing it, as if it was soothing for him. lol
3/5 of my lot don't need their nails done but my oldies nails have to be clipped as the claws will grow into their pads! Sometimes it's a slow process other times l get all 4 feet done, depends on my cats' mood. And thankfully that barbaric declawing is banned in the UK!
How is the covid situation there now?
02:11 cat is like: OMG I am gonna die
my cart turns into the spawn of satan when im trying to cut his nails, only to turn into my little angel afterwards
Every time my cat sees the nail clips she runs away or bites me😂
Yup this is the same with my cat also a cat brush he sees them come out and he is GONE like I'm looking and no where to be seen
Me: cut my cat nails
My cat: scratch before cutting my nails
My cats nails grow legit 1 day after cutting them
I bought the special cat claw trimmers with the supposed guide that stops you cutting too close to the vein or whatever. when I got it home it didn't come with instructions...so, pretty useless.
'wrap your cat in a towel like a burrito' 😆
This is absolutely wonderful, thank you so much! I'm looking forward to new kittens hopefully soon. Learnt a lot from your video....just great!
Anyone afraid to do this, try using oven gloves. I got mine from QVC. I used them and he tried biting and scratching at first and I didn’t feel a thing. After a while I think he wanted to go to sleep. If you are relaxed they are more relaxed as well. Happy trimming !!!!
I find it helps to set my cat beside me and gently press down on the cat's body. That makes my cat feel secure as I clip the claws
I have my partner hold and give my cats a treat while I trim their nails. They don't struggle or try to pull away, they're too busy with their treats!
I just got a 3 yr old Br. short hair. Do I need to shower her? If yes, how often?
I cutted my cats nails very short that it started bleeding he licked the paws and bleeding is stopped m very worried will the nails regrow ?
i carry my cat like a baby and then give him a treat after i clip each paw lol
I like how even in the calm instructional video, that cat is just gnawing away on that lady's hand. 😂
You deserve Oscar award🏆🏆
I’m struggling over here she ate all the treats and ran away. Lol
My 5 week-old kitten still has blue eyes, but I can already see he will look exactly like this one by next year. Hopefully he’ll be just as well behaved when getting his nails trimmed, but I doubt it.
I am a new kitten owner.
A friend says you only need to trim the front paws every 2 weeks
to deter them from climbing and tearing up furniture .
He says he only trims the back paws every month or 2.
Our kitten is hard to hold still, so I am anxious to do this as quickly
and with as little effort as possible.

How easy that is, probably depends on the type of cat you have. We have a Russian Blue and
it is hard enough to just use a lint roller to get the hair off him. As soon as he sees it, it's off to the races.
He is CONSTANTLY shedding. It's amazing how much hair a skinny 9 lb cat can produce constantly.
I had to line all the screens on our screened porch with a metal lath that I got from Home Depot
to protect them from being ripped to shreds. When the pandemic is over we are going to find
someone to do his nails.

My family didn't believe me about how bad declawing was until I literally had to say in detail what happens
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the girl at 1:58 is doing it wrong. I was told by a veterenarian that you shouldn't hold scissors like that. You shold hold them horizontally, like if you're cutting your own nails with scissors
CaptainOguretz have you found a better video?
Did you end up doing the back claws?
This was supposed to be a step by step guide, but I did not see any part of the video anywhere on exactly how much of the cat's nails to cut.
I think I’m the one that needs a cuddle and a treat once it’s over 🤪
Thanks for wonderful advice as always
When clipping the nail, should it be a sharp and fast action or slower?
Septic powder is for “preventing” bleeding…it’s specifically used to hopefully stop bleeding once it starts. You’ll find out the hard way if your cat has a blood clotting issue…
Great video, I just came here looking to figure out how to clip my kittens claws, and thankyou for the advice, but what the actual f* Declawing!!! I didn't know that was even a thing, how could anyone think that's an OK thing to do, The mind boggles at the absolute arseholery of some people.
I have kitten what I thought was Russian Nebelung but looks more like the cat in this video. Could someone tell me this breed please ??
I think it’s a Russian blue :)
My cat loves paw rubs😌
tried cutting a stray cat's nails for the first time with just a human nail clipper because that's all i had, they kept refusing to be put on their back, hiding their paws, so it was a lot of maneuvering and repeated attempts, but managed to get all four paws done eventually, and no bleeding thank God. i was so scared but i think i'll get a scratcher so she can file her nails now herself
What is that cover over the clippers for? You showed it closely but made no mention of it.
couldnt see which way the guard was placed, to the claw or away from the claw
I touched my cats paws and practiced showing his claws and gave him treats after. Trimming his nails for first time on Tuesday, wish me luck. At least he was calm on letting me hold his paws
Works better when they are sleeping. About a month I adopted 2 kitties (5months) one spicy and semi mild. Semi mild was done by vet. The spicy one Kali, while sleeping. Wow, I f-ing nervous.
What is the device you are using at 2 minutes 25? Some kind of clicker or spray?
I did my cat's front claws but he was swinging when I tried the back feet. I'm giving him lots of treats, and later I tried wrapping him but he was very distressed so I stopped.
It's not recommended to trim they're backfeet, they need the full nails there to hold onto things
It would have been more helpful for me if you had demonstrated how a person can trim claws when a second person is not available to hold the cat.
XoX
River-Phoenix Luna Pavier how did you get something like this?? Where can you go for this?
My cat likes his back feet to be rubbed and spreads them easy so I can clip them. But he really doesn’t like his front paws touched or held. He just pulls them away like “no don’t touch me bro”. I would give him cat nip but he’s actually pretty violent when hopped up on the nip.
THANK YOU.... I SOOOO needed to see this ‼️‼️
God bless you!!!
Now, thats the meanest thing you can do to a cat. Especially De-clawing.
Only thing crazier than that is that my brother has 7 cats.
also when they eat, they won't try to run away, you can do it slowly like few nails per meals time.
THANK YOU, this helped me so much!
Thank you for the guide.
No cat I've ever known would tolerate that being done to them without being tranquilized.
really? my kitties don’t care at all. pablo and picasso are both 5 months and i play with their paws a lot just so it’s less stressful for them. they don’t really claw anything so their nails get long and because they’re so docile i can cut their nails basically whenever by myself. of course it’s a little stressful and i do it over a few sessions with some treats but they’re absolutely amazing
@@madison8336 I love those names
there seems to be a common denominator with all those cats *you* know
What kinds of tranquilizers? I need them for my cat
@@nikkigiovanni3924 Likely only the type that a vet can obtain.
Is it ok to trim their nails, I heard it was bad.
@@river-phoenixlunapavier2641 ah I see, thank you for the reply I had been very curious, also what about declaw is that bad or good?
ReZo DriZzLe YT Declawing is generally regarded as bad because declawing removes the first bone in a cat’s toe. It is a painful operation, and a painful recovery. Often, declawing results in fear and aggression and biting due to the loss of a natural defense mechanism. Declawing is bad, trimming nails is good.
Well, I successfully clipped ONE claw before my cat got pissy...
A cat straight jacket was the best 12 bucks I ever spent lmao
Is it only the front paws ?
you can also take it to a pet spa or something like that they would do the grooming and the cleaniness
This video was very helpful and me and my cat enjoy cutting his nails its a bonding exercise
My cat is getting older and has no patience for the vet anymore. They want me to fully sedate her which will cost at least $200. Looking at options 🤞
