Just an FYI, human nail clippers seem to be prone to splitting their nails lengthwise. I bought a little round bladed clipper, like the vet used in this video, for that reason.

Thank you. I’ve been around cats more within the last decade but have never owned one. I adopted a cat this week and she is in desperate need of a nail trim. I was able to trim one nail on her and gave her a treat. I tried to do another just to see how she would react and she squirmed away. Treats were given. I’ll leave it to the professionals while she gets used to me giving her nails a trim.
Yes I have done it just like that! I managed to do only 1 nail yesterday and left it at that, didn't want to push her or traumatize her for fear she might really get aggressive every time I need to clip her nails. And today I managed to do another nail. I even sang to her, pet her constantly and tried to calm her and reassure her. It worked some of the way. 😌😅 Still a long way to go!
I have a 7 year old caucasian that i picked up as a rescue from St. Luizas Orphanage. Hes feisty and bites. Especially when i try to trim his nails. This video has been very helpful even if hes not a cat. I will put young Kaison in an armbar and then a legbar. I will not give up until his nails are trimmed. I wont stop to give him a hot pocket after one like you did only because ive "let him think he can win" already
It actually worked! We have a 6 week old rescue kitten and she had some sharp little claws!! We did it a little differently though. One of us held her on her back and gently pet her while the other carefully clipped the ends off of her claws. It’s a million times better now when she makes biscuits or tries to use her claws.
Thank you for this helpful video! Just trimmed my 1 and 2 year old Maine coons nails and even though they were getting annoyed they stayed pretty calm. I did spray a towel with catnip before starting, let them roll on it and then rolled the towel around them like a burrito and clipped the front paws. The back paws were too much for today they weren’t feeling that but I’m relieved to know that trimming nails isn’t as hard as imagined! I kept putting it off for the past year… glad I finally did it!
Dr. Greenway - thanks so much for the good advice - to take it slow, calmly, pet the cat, reward the cat, stop if the cat (or you) are agitated or angry. Our first try was amazing. We kept "Simba" quiet, offered a treat before we started, cliped the hind feet first, then the front. Right afterf, more treats!
Hi Joseph, so glad to hear it was helpful! Good on you for giving it a go and the more you and Simba keep at it, the easier it gets. That's exactly it and yes, treats help :) Wishing you guys all the best.
I just adopted a cat a few weeks ago and I am slowly attempting this method. I was able to clip 2 nails tonight with minimal irritation, don’t worry, she got lots of rewards :) this video is very helpful and I feel a lot more confident and less discouraged to clip my cats nails :)
I am currently in this boat....just got my kitty a couple months ago and she needs her nails trimmed. I was so scared, but this seems like a great method to try to start.
Update, Gimli was exceptionally well behaved for his nail clipping, we did four in one sitting and another four just a few hours later. He did not fight me at all, what a wonderful boy
I finally trimmed my cats nails for the first time and she didnt fight back. Yay!! & my cat is one who dont like to be cleaned or pampered lol. Thank you!
I just trimmed my kittens nail for the first time today, he was very calm! I did one nail then let him eat, finished a paw and let him sit for a few minutes. I did have to have my grandpa hold him while i did his back paws, thats the only trouble i had
We have a new kitten I want to do this with, but haven't yet. You can get your cat to turn into a pile of goosh with slow petting and softly speaking to him. I would think doing the nails when the cat is really relaxed or asleep would be the way to go. Our little guy is a real maniac in the morning and laid back in the afternoon so for us timing is going to be important.
Hi Amy, it's important to tailor this advice to what you think would work best for your pet. It is fantastic that you're getting on this early because the younger they are the more receptive they will hopefully be as an adult. If they're not used to having their nails trimmed, try getting them used to you handling their paws and working up to trimming one nail at a time then stopping for some time or at a pace that works best for your cat (remember to reward with lots of healthy treats after). Hopefully they will become more comfortable with you trimming their nails over time. That's a great idea of waiting until your cat is relaxed or tired, whatever makes nail trimming easier for the both of you. Wishing you two all the best. 😊🐾
Thanks! I find it helpful to do this when they are in a drowsy, calm state (not fully asleep) and snuggling near me. Definitely helps to first get them used to having their paws gently rubbed in this relaxed state so it doesn't feel like a totally new thing to have their paws handled.
Thank you for this calming instructional video. I have their nails trimmed at their grooming, but that is not enough for my babies. Most helpful is don't expect to complete, one a day. Carol
At last somebody who trims the correct and minimal amount of the cat's claw, instead of taking all possibility of climbing and protecting itself by trimming down to just above the pink.
@@EricaNicoleAcoustic If an indoor cat gets outdoors for an extended period, having his nails trimmed would be the least of its' problems. Most cat predators would not be deterred by your cat having an extra 1/8 of an inch of claws.
I recommend doing this while she is asleep as she wouldn’t resist as much. It works with me every time , she just doesn’t care when I do it while she is asleep.
I had my kitten spayed yesterday and they trimmed her nails as well. Today, when I pushed on her paws to see her nails - they are covered in dry blood and the red/pink part of the middle of the nail is completely exposed. Is my kitten in pain?? I don’t know what to do for her and this breaks my heart. 😢😢 Thanks to your video, I will be trimming her nails myself from now on.
@@amahelmi2357 she had trouble jumping up onto the bed and couch for about a week after that because her paws were sore. I felt terrible. Since then I’ve learned to clip her nails myself and it’s really not a hassle. I’ll never let anyone else clip her nails after that experience.
Thank you so much for the video! I just got a kitten and was able to take this knowledge and quite easily trim my kittens nails! Again thank you for the information!
Well explained. I'm scared to trim my big Tom cat's nails. He doesn't like it. But we both love each other. I like your suggestion of only trimming one nail a day. I had to thought of that too.
My bby (who is not alive anymore 😭) he was sooo easy to do everything with :( He was just giving up “fine do whatever so you can leave me alone”. I have never met a cat like that before. My Vet loved my cat for being so easy and nice. He didn’t even made a noise. When he was checked by the Vet he was just looking in my eyes like “ok mum, you are here so I guess I’m fine” then curled up in my arms when the Vet was done. He was soooo nice to deal with. (I think people have done some really bad things to him before we find him so he was really scared of people. Did take a long time before he trusted me and understand all I wanted was to help him. And feed him 😜) Anyhow.. my two other cata.. wow. I can’t fix their nails. They are sooooo angry when I touch their paws(?) and my Vet are scared for one of them.. :( I will try that you said about “one nail one day”. I just wonder one thing.. if I laying in my bed and my cat is laying beside me and letting me holding him. (He love when I do!) Is this a bad time to trying to trim one nail? Maybe a stupid question but.. yeah.. is it a bad time? 😂🙈
Hi GIniz, exactly just take it slowly. For any pet health inquiries we recommend checking out our 24/7 Ask a Vet service where certified veterinarians are available to answer any pet health concerns you may have either by chat or phone: www.healthcareforpets.com/ask-a-vet/. All the best.
Thank you for this video, my cat hates the vet to the point where they force me to drug her prior and she is still aggressive towards them. I drew the line when I saw that they accidentally cut the pink part of her nail and I only noticed because there was some blood on her when they put her back. They didn't even let me know and I felt awful for her, so after I tried clipping her nails everything was perfectly fine and she hardly fought me. Thank you so much for this!
I am using your advice on brushing cat's teeth. I gave my kittens a little break and started over. This time I am giving more treats, pet them and reward them at each step. They are less frustrated for sure. Thank you. Nail clipping is the next step.
patience is the key. It's hard to start with only cutting one nail, but that's the way to do it. It's the way to do everything new with a cat... if it is at all possible. Even if you have to unavoidably push your cat and keep going for whatever emergency reason, still go slow, be calm, and be patient. Vets deal with strange cats all the time and this is how they do it. If you start cutting nails as a kitten, when they grow up many adult cats will happily lay on their backs (like a baby) in the groove of your two thighs and allow you to trim their nails with no fuss at all. If you have a "terror" of a cat... maybe even a nail is too much to start with. Fearful cats may need even slower exposure therapy: you might have to start up by picking them a small way off the ground for one second, then putting them down and treating them. Movements should be slow and patient. As should our voice - this vet does an excellent job with his voice as well. What a great teaching example. It can be hard to slow down like this especially when our lives are busy and there are so many demands on our time... but it will pay off. If you have a long period of acclimatization ahead of you... set up a "desensitization station" near where you and your cat sit near each other - then, when you are both in the vicinity, you can simply reach over for a treat and perform the action you need them to tolerate. That way, a daily (or twice-daily) interaction need only take 10 seconds... instead of requiring you to find the cat, collect the materials, etc.
Very helpful video. One of the best I have viewed. Although I struggled somewhat with the distracting background music. Mute, plus closed captions to the rescue.
After having our cats for around 2 years I realised that one of my cat had very nice and trimmed nails by scratching them herself on scratching boards and outside stuff, but my other cat(which is shy) doesn't.. so I trimmed one nail of his today he wasn't very into it of course but seemed to have gone well
Good video but my 1 yr cat wouldn't sit still like this. I've tried everything including the blanket routine. At best I get 1 or 2 nails cut. Meanwhile I am scratched and bleeding. I'd be happy to have a vet do it but I'm disabled & it's hard just to get her there for check-ups. Can't imagine trying to take her in monthly:(
My cat Boo was great with nail trimming from 3 month kitten to about 15 years. Now at 17 not so great. His nails are much thicker and the quick runs almost to the tip. I couldnt trim them for a month and 2 ended up growing into the pad. I have to take him to the vet now for trims.
oh boy, I'm going to attempt to trim the nails of my two 18-years olds for the first time! Now that they're super seniors, their nails are getting easily caught on things, it appears the claws are not retracted as they were in their youth. Oh my babies ❤❤
My senior rescue cat would not let me trim her front claws, so I made an appointment at the vet's clinic. Even the vet was unable to clip my kitty's front nails (for the first time). My kitty has been renamed "Tasmanian Devil." My next attempt with involve bites of canned sardines as a treat, one nail per day. I'll get the bandages out first so they are ready.
Thank you very muxh! I'm more of a dog lover but I had rescued these two kittens. I not only have brand living room furniture but rewarding them with a treat and one nail at time. Thanks again Michelle J. Gonser
Amazing Michelle! That's exactly it, take it slow, one nail at a time with a reward (healthy is best) and hopefully the more they should become used to it. Keep it up! 😊🐾
My cat had been clipped by a vet at a young age, but it's been years. He just wanted to rub on me and the clippers. I rewarded him, and now we will try more tomorrow!
What a great idea! Definitely gonna try this! If anyone plans do this though I just googled how short should you cut the cats nails and there is like this thing called a quick and if you cut that, the nail will bleed pretty badly.. so you apparently have to cut at a downward angle and avoid the quick! Just thought I’d share the info!
My cat tries to avoid or walk away and I’m trying to keep her still with snacks, but that’s not working either. Even if I try to carry her (and I know it’s common for female cats to not like getting carried), but it annoys me that I have to deal with that every time.
I just trimmed a couple nails on my 3 month old kitten today for the first time. Rewarded with snacks and some petting, she wasn't not too keen on the petting but loved the snacks. It was a struggle and I got some whining and a light bite on my hand, nothing that drew blood though. I don't dare trying more today but tomorrow she's getting at least a couple more trimmed.
After I trim my cat's nails I give her a reward, she gets to ride with me while I get stitches at the emergency room.

My cat had an injured nail, this helped very much and she is feeling better now
Fantastic! Glad to hear your kitty is feeling better 😊🐾
This was very useful information, my cat already liked having her paws held and allowed me to clip them with this technique
Thank you! Glad it was helpful. 😊🐾
Really felt it when he said have a strong heart
Update, Gimli was exceptionally well behaved for his nail clipping, we did four in one sitting and another four just a few hours later. He did not fight me at all, what a wonderful boy
That is wonderful news! Good on your for trying it. 😊🐾
God making cats
God: make them adorable little furry pillows of love
Angel: that’s so sweet
God: now put razor blades on their feet
Amen 😅
I finally trimmed my cats nails for the first time and she didnt fight back. Yay!! & my cat is one who dont like to be cleaned or pampered lol. Thank you!
I just trimmed my kittens nail for the first time today, he was very calm! I did one nail then let him eat, finished a paw and let him sit for a few minutes. I did have to have my grandpa hold him while i did his back paws, thats the only trouble i had
Good on your for doing that! Hopefully the more you do it the easier it gets 😊🐾
Ok I started laughing hard when the camera panned to the cats face at 0:35. The vet was so calm and collected and then it cuts to this grumpy furball.
I SOOOO NEEDED TO SEE THIS ‼️‼️
Thank you for posting.... GOD BLESS YOU!!
Glad it was helpful 😊🐾
2:27 is when the trimming starts ( for those who want to know real quick) ❤️
Sheesh I'm so glad I found this video! I love my cat, but she's getting old now and I need to help her out. I'm gonna try one nail a day!! Thank you.
That's exactly right, keeping some healthy treats around might help too. You got this! 😊🐾
@@HealthcareforPets
Can you name a good healthy treat?
Thank you for this calming instructional video. I have their nails trimmed at their grooming, but that is not enough for my babies. Most helpful is don't expect to complete, one a day. Carol
At last somebody who trims the correct and minimal amount of the cat's claw, instead of taking all possibility of climbing and protecting itself by trimming down to just above the pink.
It's so important that these are done correctly. Thanks for the comment! We appreciate it:) - HCFP Team
What do indoor cats have to protect themselves from ?
Bill Zardus but what happens if they happen to get out one day? Obviously it would’ve an accident but it can still happen!
@@EricaNicoleAcoustic If an indoor cat gets outdoors for an extended period, having
his nails trimmed would be the least of its' problems. Most cat predators would not
be deterred by your cat having an extra 1/8 of an inch of claws.
@The God Emperor Himself I'm pretty sure it is illegal for vets to declaw housecats these days
in most states but I could be wrong.
3:42 your cat’s eyes are so green!
I recommend doing this while she is asleep as she wouldn’t resist as much. It works with me every time , she just doesn’t care when I do it while she is asleep.
Great tip, thanks for sharing! 😊🐾
Thanks to your video, I will be trimming her nails myself from now on.
That is horrible. I would write those bastards a negative google review so others can avoid that happening to their animal.
@@amahelmi2357 she had trouble jumping up onto the bed and couch for about a week after that because her paws were sore. I felt terrible. Since then I’ve learned to clip her nails myself and it’s really not a hassle. I’ll never let anyone else clip her nails after that experience.
@@amahelmi2357 she is all better 💕
Thank you so much for the video! I just got a kitten and was able to take this knowledge and quite easily trim my kittens nails! Again thank you for the information!
Amazing Julia! Love hearing this. Keep it up! 😊🐾
And feed him 😜)
Anyhow.. my two other cata.. wow. I can’t fix their nails. They are sooooo angry when I touch their paws(?) and my Vet are scared for one of them.. :(
I will try that you said about “one nail one day”. I just wonder one thing.. if I laying in my bed and my cat is laying beside me and letting me holding him. (He love when I do!)
Is this a bad time to trying to trim one nail? Maybe a stupid question but.. yeah.. is it a bad time? 😂🙈
Hi GIniz, exactly just take it slowly. For any pet health inquiries we recommend checking out our 24/7 Ask a Vet service where certified veterinarians are available to answer any pet health concerns you may have either by chat or phone: www.healthcareforpets.com/ask-a-vet/. All the best.
😂this cat loves this. She is pretty chilled out!
Glad to hear it was helpful. You've got this! 😊🐾
What is the door doing at 2:31 ?
Whoa! It looks like the molding separated from the door? Cue the theme from The Twilight Zone!
Tf 😂
THE SKY IS FALLING
Oh my god, why did you point this out? Now I need to know
I can't unsee it
patience is the key.
0:34 Damn that cat lookin' mad 😳
The cat used in the video is drunk haha
Had a ton of catnip
Thanks for the tips! Never thought to start with one nail per day.
You're very welcome! Glad it was helpful 😊🐾
Wish I could see the nail up close to see exactly the part of the nail you cut off and at what angle.
SAME I’M SO ANXIOUS THAT I’LL HURT MY CAT
Very helpful video. One of the best I have viewed. Although I struggled somewhat with the distracting background music. Mute, plus closed captions to the rescue.
lol thank you! :)
That cat was NOT having it, the face is priceless 😂
What's going on with the door behind the doctor? The top left corner moves at 02:30. What was that?
Proof that life is a simulation
0:36 cat face looks like "Let me alone" "what are you talking about"
At this point I could cut both paws on the front (with one nail left on the left). Now my cat refuses to let me get his back nails cut.
I feel so sad
The look on the 🐈 cats face is like Get me out of here It needs Ruby slippers!!! 😄😄
After having our cats for around 2 years I realised that one of my cat had very nice and trimmed nails by scratching them herself on scratching boards and outside stuff, but my other cat(which is shy) doesn't.. so I trimmed one nail of his today he wasn't very into it of course but seemed to have gone well
I followed your advice and managed to clip one nail, albeit after some biting and scratching. He got a treat after so it’s fine.
Can't imagine trying to take her in monthly:(
Cheryl yeah my cat dose that to and that is same that happened to me!!!
Cheryl I'm having the same issue with my cat, I think the cat in the video is sedated...he's just sitting there.
ROFL omg the zoom in on the cat looking so angry! 😂😂😂😂
So great! My cat loves getting nails trimmed now! Great video!
Great to hear :)
Thanks! Much needed! Thanks for the not too wordy and straight to the point video!
2:29 Am I hallucinating?
I saw this too!!!
wow good catch
Id have no face left if I tryed 😂
Cute little Marble ❤️
My senior rescue cat would not let me trim her front claws, so I made an appointment at the vet's clinic. Even the vet was unable to clip my kitty's front nails (for the first time). My kitty has been renamed "Tasmanian Devil." My next attempt with involve bites of canned sardines as a treat, one nail per day. I'll get the bandages out first so they are ready.
Where is the video for restraining techniques? I don't see a card on the video nor a link in the description.
Keep it up! 😊🐾
I've had 3 cats. All were completely different- especially when it came to nail trimming!!!
My cat had been clipped by a vet at a young age, but it's been years. He just wanted to rub on me and the clippers. I rewarded him, and now we will try more tomorrow!
why did I watch and enjoy this?! I don't have a cat 😭

You've got this!! With a little time, practice and patience you and your cat will be well on your way to having spa days very soon! :)
@@HealthcareforPets thank you... i hope so!
Omg I finally found a cat that looks exactly like my cat wow
My cat tries to avoid or walk away and I’m trying to keep her still with snacks, but that’s not working either. Even if I try to carry her (and I know it’s common for female cats to not like getting carried), but it annoys me that I have to deal with that every time.
Amazing how easy it is when the animal is sedated!
One nail at a time is how I introduced mine to nail clipping. Also do it when they are mellow and somewhat sleepy.
Great video. Is that cat dead?
I just trimmed a couple nails on my 3 month old kitten today for the first time. Rewarded with snacks and some petting, she wasn't not too keen on the petting but loved the snacks. It was a struggle and I got some whining and a light bite on my hand, nothing that drew blood though. I don't dare trying more today but tomorrow she's getting at least a couple more trimmed.
