- Burrowing Owls are a truly fascinating owl species with a lifestyle unlike any other owl species in North America. When one of these strange birds was reported in the Rio Grande Valley while we happened to be in the area, we knew we had to go try and find it.

I saw my Lifer Burrowing Owl in a cherry tree outside a Post Office in W. Washington. Years later, on a trip to Florida I saw them "in the wild". They are a special bird. Thanks for sharing your Burrowing Owl adventure with us.
I'm working a seasonal job in southwest Florida right now, and there are Burrowing Owls everywhere around where I'm living, and they are definitely one of my favorite species in the area

I was at the Rookery Bay birding festival in January 2020 and encountered burrowing owls on one of the events in Marco Island. It was a lifer for me! Many other species native to Florida were also lifers for me that week.
Nice! I found bunches of them in the Lake Abiqiui NM area a couple years ago. pretty cool owls.
These are very cool little birds :) I've gotten some great shots of them here in Nor Cal :) Been thinking about them again lately. Watching this video makes me want to try to go find them again :)
OMG, you guys went down to San Benito to find the most photographed burrowing owl in the lower Rio Grande Valley. While you're there, check out Laguna Vista, Laguna Atascosa, and South Padre for birding.
If you guys are still in the Rio Grande Valley check out Estero Llano Grande State Park. Best place to see Common Pauraque. Also they have had a Gadwall/Northern Pintail hybrid for several years winter there. Also Bentsen Rio Grande State Park is the best for hawk watching and your best chance for Hook Billed Kite. Happy birding!
Burrowing owls are the coolest. I have yet to see one, but I saw a Little Owl in Spain that looks very similar. Also, If you guys ever make it to Brooklyn, it would be great to meet you and bird the hot🐦 spots ….and you don’t need a car! Keep up the great work!

Interesting to see another perspective on this species with observers like you, thousands of kilometers from where I live, in South America, where the species is very common, they are even seen in suburban neighborhoods living in large gardens or in vacant lots. Perhaps in the countryside their populations are dwindling because of the insecticides used in agriculture.
I liked the two owls at the beginning, they are wonderful, for me it would be a dream to see them.

Very timely! I fly to El Paso this weekend from MKE and am also following the hot tips and photos from eBird out that way to find burrowing owls. Wish me luck, its been a whole winter of barred and long eared fails in WI for me so far...
They are fairly common out in the western US. They love farmland and open praries. There are actually professional humane owl removal services here for when they won't leave a construction site. Apparently they wait until babies are starting to leave the nest and they block it with a one way door so the birds can leave but not go back in. Speaking of weird places to put burrows, my friend has a favorite neighborhood burrowing owl family living in a planter on a road median. Not sure how the landscapers will plan to maintain the bushes with a protected species nesting inside.
We visited Zanjero Park in Gilbert AZ a few years ago to see the burrowing owls. There is farm country nearby so I assume they hunt in the fields. I believe they were relocated there and they live in man made pipes located in the old reservoir sides. Also a good place for roadrunners and hummers. Good parking lot and a decent trail around and through the rain retention reservoir. I believe that is a concrete well crock that your owl was roosting on BTW. 🇨🇦

I live in south Texas in Robstown and my backyard is just like this and I noticed an owl these past 2 weeks but didn’t know what time but thanks to this video I know what type of owl it most likely will be. And I can take nice pictures of it just got to look for it’s hole since there isn’t much trees I thought they lived in a tree but didn’t know they like holes instead haha thank you

I never realized Burrowing Owls were that widespread. I always associate them with Arizona, not the northwestern states.

Apparently they do. Which can be a big problem during nesting season, but if they’re not nesting they just move to higher ground.
My lifer BUOW was annihilated by a CORA, which was then attacked by a PEFA. Lil bro had no chance of survival 😢😭

just like coyotes the cattle egret's range is expanding due to humans removing the animals that competes with them or predate on them
