We used to have an burrowing owl that would play tag with our dog. Owl would hop on our backyard fence and swoop on the dog (decent medium sized pupper and the owl never used their claws or beak, so the owl clearly wasn’t hunting), and our dog would chase him back onto the fence, tail wagging. They’d spend every morning playing around with this back and forth before they both went to do their own thing.
We have Burrowing Owls a few blocks from my house here in south central AZ. They are cute little owls, and the male starts flapping his wings and yapping at me when I get the least bit close. In respect for them, I keep my distance.
Blue sky, sun, green grass, Burrowing Owls....It doesn't get any better than that. Thanks for sharing your part of the world with us in the frozen tundra
Thank you so much for this video! From the Little Owl to the great Eagle Owl, these are the most fascinating creatures on the planet. So free, so powerful and so amiable!
Yesterday my daughter and I got a good look at one of these guys. Not knowing that they were active night and day, I was surprised to see an owl in broad daylight eyeing potential prey at a local creek. I didn't get any pictures or video as we were very, very close and I was trying not to alert the owl to our presence. My daughter was too excited, and she whispers loudly-like a kid would. The owl zeroed in on our location. It took in the situation as it obviously was deciding if we were a threat to itself or it's hunting. Finally, looking annoyed, it took off and landed upstream-much to the dismay of some mockingbirds.
They are a delight to watch. When the chicks emerge in late March or April they are even more fun to observe. Their natural curiosity causes all sorts of humorous behavior. Be sure to watch my Cute Baby Burrowing Owls; ua-cam.com/video/Xr6IqqmZfAI/v-deo.html
Where have you been looking? What time of the year have you been looking? In southwest Florida they are most active and hanging around their nests from about February to May. That is when they are breeding, laying, hatching and rearing their young. After the chicks are fledged they are off earning a living and hard to find. Once the young first come out of the nest, and for the next several weeks you should have plenty of opportunities. They aren't at all shy.
I had a dream of an owl and it was so detailed from the yellow eyes and yellow beak, brown and tan speckles and even the shape of the head. It was surely this burrowing owl. It was watching over me from outside of a window. I didn’t understand the dream but I did get the sense of protection and power and that the owl wanted me to see him. He did feel masculine in my dream. What drove me confused was I didn’t picture owls to look like this So I wasn’t sure this owl actually exist. Then after telling my dream to several people someone said it must have been my animal spirit. I was surprised to see this owl actually exist and it looks exactly to the T what my dream owl looked like. Then just days after the dream there was a huge billboard on the side of this building with this same owl and it gave me a rush. Coincidence or signs I don’t know but this owl is fascinating to me now.
Wow, how wonderful these Owls are. It's such a coincidence that I have just loaded a video of Little Owls and they appear to be very similar looking Owls. I love it when the Burrowing Owl walks up from the burrow and is looking all around for predators. Then when one returns, the other is on a post watching for prey. I love the digging out of any loose sand too. Finally, those still shots at the end are superb. It's a great video and thanks you for sharing. ◕‿◕
We had a large family of them that lived at our old home in Davie, Fl. right off hiatus and I75 they would be in the driveway greeting us every night never saw them much in the day though.
I am in Cape Coral and last year there were two empty lots had burrows for the owls just across the street.. they are all back again this year. Counted 8 on one lot. Very cute.
I'm vacationing in Cape Coral right now and saw a pair on a site that looked just like this one. I got curious and I'm glad I found out what they are. They are beautiful.
Awsum video! Thanks for taking the time to make and share it. In doing so you have obviously brought much joy to many people. I love owls. I live in N. California. Occasionally I will go for walks at night out in the country. There is a spot by the creak I like a lot becouse there are a lot of great horned owls in the area. Its almost impossable to see them but you can hear them everywhere. Sitting by the creak at night listening to at least a half dozen of them hoo hooting is absolutely mystical.
In retrospect, Rowlet and its evolutions seem inspired by at least two sorts of owls - the first two stages seem very similar to Barn Owls, but Decidueye seems to look more like other owls.
Great video! A park near our house has a burrowing owl habitat. I just found out about it today. My daughter and I are photographers and birdwatchers, so we'll be hooting it up with the owlets tomorrow!
Hi there, great video! What a unique bird, when one thinks of owls (me) an image of a night predator residing in trees comes to mind! I hope these little guys are protected from the destruction of mankind, I saw the movie "Hoot" last night. Good times! EML Arlington, Va.
+DCBARNONE89 Glad you enjoyed spending a few minutes with the owls. Their life style does seem to fly in the face of convention. Just another example of Nature's amazing adaptability I suppose. The Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife and the City of Cape Coral seem to be doing a fine job of protecting these little guys.
photoguy73 I'am so glad to see that there are still some around. I was born & raised in S/E, FL & With so much CONSTANT DEVELOPMENT & ppl moving to FL I didn't know if there were any left. Also of interest is the gopher tortoise (Burrowing) in central FL, They are Amazing! But again.... Any left ? I want/ Need to move back home. But I hear it's a different place.
0:03 burrowing owl: hoo what are you doing here near my house? 1:37 burrrowing owl: hoo is stupid enoff to wake me up in the middle of the day? 1:56 also burrowing owl: hey stop the chitter chatter i am trying to sleep!
I remember i was on my way to school and i would just hop over my backyard wall bc my school wasnt that far only 3 minutes away and while on my way i have to cross through the desert and right as i get to this area of burrows under a bush sure enough 2 little owls came speeding out. They were obviously spooked of me we had a stand off i surely just walked away slowly but i loved owls ever since
These are birds we associate with the southern prairies. So glad they are well in your area too. But... Why do they always look so damn concerned? Can you imagine one as a customer?
+Les Brown Yes, they do appear concerned. However, at least in this part of Florida they seem to have fewer reasons to be concerned than other areas perhaps. They have a large group of dedicated volunteers working hard to keep their living conditions up to code. And the City of Cape Coral values them as a tourist draw and protects their home sites. I think the average citizen enjoys seeing them around as well. We could only wish that all wildlife species, regardless of their cuteness factor, were so well protected.
+photoguy73 A lot easier to view than any other owl. I have only once in my life seen a pygmy owl. So damn tiny. With a face on the back of their head. Very rare to see where I was at the time.
If you want to fall head over heels in love, buy a bird book, and start learning about the thousands of bird species we share this big blue marble with. It will blow your mind, and fifty sixty years from now you'll still be in love just like a teenager. It's part of a good education as much as arithmetic, and learning to read. Without knowledge of the creatures that make up our network of life we endanger ourselves severely. These guys are magnificent.
I had Burrowing owls living in my side yard, they used to greet me by my garage every morning when I came from work and would follow me as I walked to the mailbox
Thank you. I am pleased so many people have enjoyed watching the owls.
And please borrow Hoot, the movie from your library. Good, clean fun about burrowing owls. I had to have a box of tissues nearby.
Me too
Would you please tell me camera you use? We have an active burrow & would like to watch them + share vids. :) Thank you!! 😁

Owls are the most fascinating of all the birds!
Isolated 937 Parrots? Birds of Paradise?
Owls are also known for being some of the dumber bird species. The Wise Owl is a joke.
You are the most fascinating of all the birds!
@@MrSlanderer you really judging how much you like animals based on their "dumb or smart " capabilities.. what a pomp
@@MrSlanderer still adorable and cool tho
@@MrSlanderer The owl is the "dumber bird species". What makes you say that?
They are so cute!!, I love the noises that they make :-) Thanks for sharing this great moment.
There seriously needs to be a “love” button on UA-cam. The owls are so adorable!!! Thank you for sharing them with us. 🥰🥰🥰

Has to be the cutest creature I’ve ever seen
I grew up in Cape Coral, there was a burrowing owl nest in the field next to my bus stop. I loved watching them every morning.
