  • In this video I will show you how paint turquoise blue ocean, painting techniques for seascapes, brush work and some important tips on composition.
    When I was painting this art work I ran into some problems with the composition which in hindsight I could have avoided with some better planning. Regardless sometimes you can run into problems when painting an art work so I give you some tips on how to fix you painting if it is not working.
    This painting is inspired by the Central Coast area of Australia. The beautiful coast line is characterised by turquoise blue ocean, sandy beaches and rocky shores.
    I have painted this art work in oils but you can also use acrylics as well.

    Quite a challenge!
    Thanks to your demonstration, I've learned to paint the clear water by the rocks as a reflection color, and not just a shadow color. Looking forward to exaggerating that by painting some clear water shapes ("holes" in the foam) that bridge both the shadow area, as well as the sunlit area.

    Thanks again Sam. I really liked the final outcome of your painting and thanks also for sharing how you correct compositional errors. In my own work I finally had the courage to use phalo green to "punch up the green" as you say. It worked! I've had phalo green for awhile but considered it too difficult to work with. Just a touch did the trick. Thanks again.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Yes phthalo green is a great colour for increasing the saturation of your greens. You only need a little amount but it goes a long way. You can use phthalo green in skies, water and ocean as well 😊

    Hi Sam, this is a timely demo for me. I’m trying to paint a seascape with smaller waves etc. I learned so much watching this, I just wish I had the talent to do it justice. Your attention to detail is awesome, a reflection of the amount of time you have spent being a pro artist and all. I also like the way you explain every brush stroke and colour mix. I paint acrylic, never been game enough to use oils, but I’m sure your methods would apply to acrylics in the main. So thanks Sam, I’m back to the drawing board. Dave M ( AUSTRALIA ) 😎🇦🇺

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 роки тому +1

      Hi David, just keep practicing and enjoy the process. If you get the chance you should try oil paints, personally I think they are easier to use than acrylics. Also the colours are so much more vibrant. If you buy oil paints make sure they are artists quality and just use one brand of paint. I can recommend Langridge oil paints, they are a Melbourne based company. Happy painting 😊

    • @jakethesnake1366
      @jakethesnake1366 4 роки тому

      Totally agree, oils look better. My problem is the fumes from turpentine. My studio is well ventilated but it still affects me. I switched to linseed oil but I have problems cleaning my brushes . Colors get muddy. Any advice?

    • @davemalt2451
      @davemalt2451 4 роки тому

      Jakethe Snake Thanks for your interest “ JS”. I think the fumes would be a killer for me as well as drying times etc. Water based oils may be a good middle ground for me. Over working with acrylics causes mud, something I do frequently. All the best, Dave M (AUSTRALIA ) 😎🇦🇺

      Samuel Earp Artist Hi Sam, thanks for your fast reply. Your advice if valuable to me, I will take it under advisement. Might go half way and give water based oils a try if you agree with that. I’ll let you know how it goes, take care, Dave M ( AUSTRALIA )😎🇦🇺

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  3 роки тому

      I have never used Liquin fine detail but I’ll have to dry it. I use Liquin Impasto usually for finer details, it gives the paint thicker body to it if that makes sense. It’s great when you want to add final highlights at the end of your painting 😊

    Hi, Samuel awesome well explained painting as always. You say you leave your painting to dry in between layers, i wonder if in a future video you could explain at the points you leave it to dry and benefits of doing so. Also what's your view of blocking in with acrylics then using oils. Have you, would you ever do it that way. Cheers

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks. Yes I will definitely be more mindful to explain when I let my paintings dry in between layer. I'm not sure about blocking it in with acrylics, I personally stick to using one medium. I paint with oils as I find them the easiest paints to use 😊

    Hey! Do you think you could do a lesson for beginners on brushstrokes? I see you and some of the other guys on YT able to get these really nice fluffy clouds or trees using a flat or a dagger and I have no idea how to do it without them looking sharp and pointy

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Dylan, yes I will keep this in mind for sure. I do think it’s about using the right brush for the job however I don’t think it’s essential to use dagger brushes even though they are useful. Flats and filberts are my most used brushes. Also make sure to keep your brushes clean and no paint collecting in the ferrule, this will also help with your brush work. Stay tuned, I’ll talk more about brush marks in future videos 😊

    Late... but now i understand why you cancelled the burnt umber. Its the Siena and the ultramarine. Its limit the palette and moved unnecessary colors. Although i think the burnt umber us a powerful and useful...it cant be variant to the orange side the Siena does. I know you addicted to cobalt teal but wonder if you can limit the palette more and use phtalo green. I think the yellow oxide is amazing substitute to ochre and found he have more pure brightness and have very accurate complementary to the ultramarine. Sam....i just addicted to your painting way.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks you. I haven't stopped using burnt umber but I haven't felt the need to use it lately. Burnt umber is a dark yellow, whereas burnt sienna is a dark orange, so I feel burnt sienna combines with blue better. Whilst burnt umber is a nice colour from a teaching perspective I have not been using it as much as if used incorrectly it can quickly create muddy colour.
      With regards to cobalt teal, I only recently started using it again in the last few months as it is such a useful colour...but yes you are right you can use phthalo green as well. I love yellow oxide too, again very versatile and it's also cheaper than yellow ochre 😊
