Haven't seen this yet so: * 1:33 - Soubresaut * 1:43 - Changement * 2:00 - Entrechat Trois * 2:24 - Entrechat Quatre * 2:58 - Entrechat Cinq * 3:35 - Entrechat Six 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞 (Great video - thanks so much!!!)
I love love love that you slowed it down that much. I often change the speed of videos in the settings so that I can actually see what's going on. Your slowed down version helps even more than that because I can actually see the "perfect" way to do it.
I'm RAD trained, and our entrechat cinq is different! We don't brush out. Ours is essentially an entrechat quatre only landing in coupe. Please teach grande jette en tournant!!
I'm Russian-trained, and we do soubresaut in petit allegro travelling forward (croise or efface). Also I may be completely wrong but entrechat cinq as far as I can remember look completely different :'D
In my ballet class, my teacher demonstrated and defined entrechat cinq as an entrechat quatre, but instead of the front leg landing in fifth, it lands in cou de pied devant/dessus. We never learned it with the back leg brushing a la seconde.
Thanks for showing the different jumps! My ballet teacher taught us how to count the different jumps counting how many movements you do - so entrechat quatre you could count the movement opening, then the cross cover, then the movement opening and the closing again. Entrechat six is currently what my teacher is working on with me - and they are VERY hard!!! Love the technique tips videos! Keep them coming!
Haha great question - I used a center barre to hold myself up. I thought about jumping in real time and then slowing it down, but it would have been too blurry.
Interesting. My teacher taught us that the number of the jump is how many times your foot moves outward and inward. So in a quatre for example if right foot in front, the right foot goes out, in, out, and back in (to the front) so the right foot moved 4 times. In a entrechat six the foot moves out and in 6 times etc.. that helped me remember them a lot. Love how you slow your jumps down!
Thank you for your nice advice and beautiful demonstration. They help me a lot. My problems these days are cabriole jumps. It would be grateful if you could talk about it.
I'd love to see a basics video on fondue and pas de cheval and other small steps. They are all over your ballet classes and I would love how to know to do them correctly. Thanks!
Very helpful! I was really struggling with beats and jumps in ballet and this is useful! Love ur teqnique for slowing it down too! Different from most ballet videos!
I'd love it if you did some videos on more advanced jumps. Jete battu, brises, etc...how they beat and ways to improve them. This was a great video, thanks!
Yay!! I've been waiting for this video! :) :) :) I would be interested in reviewing more beats like brises, jete beats, and such. I guess the more advanced stuff, if there are enough people asking for it.
I loved this clear and slow breaking down of it, really helped. I need to extend my ballet vocabulary badly, so I would appreciate videos like this concerning grand allegro jumps - mainly jumps, which I missed out, unfort my training unexpectedly stopped when I attended ballet class due to health problems, and since that I train alone... And it is very difficult to learn from ballet sylabus, where it is too fast - cause real time videos are way to fast to understand what's happening, and since it is only a sylabus there's no explanation or help how to execute, so I am stucked, I've got a written ballet dictionary based on russian therminology, so I'm getting really confused what is what.
I simply love the basic series! This is fantastic!!! Would you consider doing a ballet basic video on arabesques (where to hold the arms, any tips how to get into proper position with the leg, how to get it high etc) and attitudes ☺?
Hi Kathryn, was wondering if you could do a video on realistic possibilities in ballet for adult beginners? I know being a professional dancer is impossible, I've read about Zelda Fitzgerald etc. But I'd like to know about point work and if any adult beginner ever can dance beautifully, along with anything else you think is relevant :)
Omg loved this video as petit allegro isn't exactly my strong point... 😂 would love to see a video with tips on how to execute these jumps if possible 😁 x
Can you do a video teaching how to keep the whole foot on the ground while doing exercises? I tend to put my weight on the inside of my feet while in first position etc.
I absolutely love your channel! I am an adult ballet beginner and your channel is so helpful in breaking down the details of the basic steps. I have seen you mention your online classes that you teach and I was wondering if these classes can be taken via mobile device? I would love to take a few of your classes on days that I am out in the field (I am a army medic and spend a lot of time away from home)
Hey! I have a question/advice to ask you and maybe if you think it would be useful enough you could do a video about it on your UA-cam channel (which I completely love btw) Anyway, I am a junior in high school and I have started researching and looking at dance programs at colleges. In a couple of weeks me and a friend from dance are going to a dance workshop at OCU. The only thing is, I have never attended something like this before, not even a summer intensive and I don't know how to prepare. What do I bring? What should I expect? Is there anything I need to know?
I'd never even realised there was an alternate Entrechat Cinq. I'm RAD trained and we think of it as extension of the entrechat trois in that where entrechat trois ends with the front foot in coupe at the back (for dessous, of course) the entrechat cinq would start in the same position and end with the left foot in the back in coupe (being dessous again). I think someone also mentioned it in the comments: RAD has a changement battu (Royale in most other syllabi I think?) where an emphasis is put on showing the feet in fifth in the air before changing the feet. He also have what is called an assemble battu where there is same emphasis on showing the feet in fifth before landing, but I'm very curious to hear how this is represented in other syllabi.
does the changement battu kinda work like echappés in RAD where they want you to go up and then change position. I only ever did up to grade 5 because I lived to far from school
Just wondering if you would be interested in making a video about three quarter walks or "ballet walks" on pointe? Maybe about connecting steps in dances? I feel like an elephant when I walk between parts of my dance):
Noor Fares when I'm having trouble with jumps, I'll imagine myself doing them, and break it down. it helps a lot to watch older girls take class as well, if you can. I'd also try to take Pilates if you can to build strength, because that will help a lot at Barre and Center. If you can't do that, try working out at home ( that's what I do). And most importantly, don't get frustrated! everything takes time. ☺
Noor Fares I'm in the same boat. 14 never taken a class in my life since last summer. Some things I've learned so far are don't get too down on yourself. Practice at home when you can. Also watch a lot of videos on UA-cam related to dance. There's great tips on here. Most importantly have fun and try not compare yourself to others. Do what you can do and don't worry about what others think. Stretch and work out a lot.
I would suggest working out to strengthen your core, and always mix it up so your body doesn't get used to it, i.e. cardio - but the best thing to do is to do class as many times a week as you can, and do your homework outside of class - ask your teacher for specific tips :)
what videos do you watch to help yourself? i used to take ballet a lot so I have good basic basic knowledge but thats it! anything would be super helpful
That was really good! Thank you!! I was wondering if you could explain what does a teacher want, when they tell you to do the assembles and jetes with batteu. I dont get it.
Kathryn please help!!!!!!!! I am doing La Bayadere 2nd shade variation and I am having a lot of trouble with the jumps and beats in the beginning. I not with a studio right now so I'm training on my own and I really need some tips. xoxo much love
oh lord that's a tough one! :D I haven't done the whole thing, but I think the main aspect of those jumps is height, not distance ;) good luck with it, I'm sure you'll ace it!!!!!!
Hey can you do a video about waiting lists, I got into the waiting list for SAB's summer intensive, but I also got accepted into Boston Ballet, I have to respond to Boston before o hear back from SAB, please help! PS I love your videos so much! They are so helpful and really have improved me as a dancer❤️
Jemma Productions I'd go to Boston. If you have a confirmed spot there it's probably better than the waiting list at a very big school, so u might not get in for a long time. Hope I helped!
Thank you so much for this, I have such a hard time with these jumps. I always feel so spastic and my legs end up moving more like scissors, but my turnout isn't that good.
this may be a dumb question..but is the plain old changemat supposed to have a beat in the front before the change happens because I feel like that's what I saw in the video
A Royale is like a changement but you beat front before changing. So beat front and land behind, where a changement its focus is more on the change than the beat. Does that make sense?
Royale!!!! That's the one I forgot! ugh. Anyway.... Yes - it's almost like you beat where you are and change as you land. A changement changes immediately.
Hello, can you prepare a video that includes some little tips and exercises to improve jumping. It is very diffucult for me to jump even in small and basic figures. :( Thank you for all lessons, I love your videos and always learn many things to improve my dancing
What is a royale? I was always taught that a royale was one beat with no change and now I'm confusing my students! I was taught russian ballet but I can't seem to find any information on what is a royale :( Thanks for your help!
I learned batteries in Russian Style as (1) Royale - it's a changement with a beat devant or derriere; (2) Entrechat Trois - as you showed, (3) Entrechat quatre, (4) Entrechat cinq - not the way you showed... I learned as entrechat quatre landing coupe and finally (5) Entrechat six.
I’m really struggling with little jumps . I’m a new beginner adult . My knee has a bit of arthritis in my knee . I can’t jump . It’s not my thing I can’t jump . It’s to hard ... i don’t know what to do at my class . I’m really frustrated

* 3:35 - Entrechat Six

(Great video - thanks so much!!!)
Yessss I need more basics and terminology. I really like how you slowed it down so it was easier to see and do on my own. Very helpful!
That entre chat cinq is above my abilities
I love love love that you slowed it down that much. I often change the speed of videos in the settings so that I can actually see what's going on.
Your slowed down version helps even more than that because I can actually see the "perfect" way to do it.
it's amazing that you slowed it down but I would have loved to see it in real time too!
I'm RAD trained, and our entrechat cinq is different! We don't brush out. Ours is essentially an entrechat quatre only landing in coupe.
Please teach grande jette en tournant!!
Same here! :)
I'm trained in vaganova
Daph Duck Yes grand jeté en tournant pleaaaaaseeee
Same
I'm Russian-trained, and we do soubresaut in petit allegro travelling forward (croise or efface).
I learned like that too, royal technic I suppose
Yes mine too ending cou de pied was a bit surprised to see Katie's version
Yes, uneven number lands in cou de pied.
Yep. Literally every ballet teacher I've ever had.
thank you for this. Basics and the terminology is what I have been waiting for all along
I'm glad to see clearly the difference in each jump . Between you and jumps are my weakness but I'm willing to keep trying
Just started watching your videos and I'm already in love with them and absolutely love your techinique!!!!! Thanks!
I'm just curious, how was that filmed? My ballet would be way better if I could defy gravity like that! :D
Haha great question - I used a center barre to hold myself up. I thought about jumping in real time and then slowing it down, but it would have been too blurry.
Audrey Davidiuk I wondered the same thing! 😄
LOL YES! xD
Easy question, she used a bar
right!
We do a entrechat 5 as an entrechat 4 and land in coup de pied behind (as the entrechat 3) does
Interesting. My teacher taught us that the number of the jump is how many times your foot moves outward and inward. So in a quatre for example if right foot in front, the right foot goes out, in, out, and back in (to the front) so the right foot moved 4 times. Yes please do more videos like this. It really helps
I needed this so much! thanks Katie!

Thank you very much, this was very clear and helpful. Have a nice week !
Assemble and double assemble!! Loving your vids Katie ☺

Yay!! I've been waiting for this video! :) :) :) I would be interested in reviewing more beats like brises, jete beats, and such. I guess the more advanced stuff, if there are enough people asking for it.
DancingwiththeDocs I second that! Also brise vole, please (but I think a longer Technique Tips video would be most helpful for that one.)
DancingwiththeDocs I agree!!
Brise vole help tutorial please
Loved this video!! Would definitely love to see other videos like this!
wonderful video, thanks very much
This is so interesting! Very easy to follow. Thank you so much!
Omg this was soooooo Helpful Katie! Thank you!! Wishing you well xoxo
Thank you for the education👏

This was so helpful!! Thanks Katie! :)
This video is so helpful, thanks a lot
This was so helpful, thank you! So much more helpful than if I had tried teaching myself from a book or internet article.
I would really love to see an advanced petite and grand allegro with terminology and how to do it!! ❤️☺️ thanks and I love your videos
Such a good video, I get mixed up with my jumps when training, would love a video on more grande allegro jumps plz
I love the break down and slow demo, but I'd also love to see what each looks like when done normally after the explanations.
the royal ballet has a great visual glossary on their yt channel!
Hi Kathryn, was wondering if you could do a video on realistic possibilities in ballet for adult beginners? can you give some tips maybe how to stay as long in the air as I need to be to do an entrachat 5 oder six ?
Thank you, this is very helpful!
This was very helpful!
Hi Kathryn!!! can you please make a video for music counting in ballet?? Pleaseeee!!! Thank you so much for your amazing videos, hugs!
Can u make a video about more tips on acting in ballet because I want to be a professional dancer and I need all the help I can get!!! Thank you!!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Omg thank you so much
Can you do a video teaching how to keep the whole foot on the ground while doing exercises? I tend to put my weight on the inside of my feet while in first position etc.
The entrechat quatre is a move that is very common in irish dancing! Except it’s typically called a double/double jump!
Great video
I absolutely love your channel! I am an adult ballet beginner and your channel is so helpful in breaking down the details of the basic steps. I would love to take a few of your classes on days that I am out in the field (I am a army medic and spend a lot of time away from home)
Then whose in the pic 🤔
In the russian school (Vaganova method) entrechat cinq is different: it's the same thing of entrechat quatre but it lands in coupè.😊
Thank you!
We don't say "entrechat cinq" in France, we call It "brisé", I think that's the only diference 😊
yesss me too
entrechat six. they're going to be the death of me. I'm just faking it until I make it with those 😂
Hi
could you do please a video with some tips to improveyour jumps.. like to get them higher and better in the terms of technique
thanks
Can you do one where you talk about jete battus? Sorry idk if I'm spelling that right
Hey! I have a question/advice to ask you and maybe if you think it would be useful enough you could do a video about it on your UA-cam channel (which I completely love btw)

SAB ❤️ then soon on ABT
Congrats
Thank you so much for this, I have such a hard time with these jumps. I always feel so spastic and my legs end up moving more like scissors, but my turnout isn't that good.

Has anyone ever heard of a changement battu royale aka royale called a entrechat deux? First time I've ever heard that one...
More techniques videos plz.
I love petit allegro, entrechat quatres are tougher for me because I have a smaller turnout
Your eyebrows are amazing.
Hello, can you prepare a video that includes some little tips and exercises to improve jumping. It is very diffucult for me to jump even in small and basic figures. :( Thank you for all lessons, I love your videos and always learn many things to improve my dancing
How can I improve my stage presence??
Could you do a video on beats?
I was always taught to count the fifth not the first in between so that entrechat is 2 beats
I'm not a dancer but I really want to try these steps for feet strengthening and fitness purposes
I’m really struggling with little jumps . I’m a new beginner adult . My knee has a bit of arthritis in my knee . I can’t jump . It’s not my thing I can’t jump . It’s to hard ... i don’t know what to do at my class . I’m really frustrated
I subscribed
And there is another little jump (in russian school ,at least): it's called royal, (pronounced "ruaial") and it's similar to changement.
What about royales?
Why does the odd-numbered entrechat trois (3) end in a coupe, while the odd-numbered entrechat cinq (5) does not?
In some syllabi it does, so it may be a quirk of Balanchine
Starts on one foot instead of two! Hope that's a help!
How can you do that?
Hi im New here but i Have always loved ballet the thing is im 14 and i dont Know if its late for me to start Having clases
Rechael John It never is too late!!!
Misty Copeland didn't start until she was 13! I don't intend to ever be professional, but I didn't start ballet until I was 19 and I love it. I hope I can take classes for as long as I'm physically able to do ballet.
I've called a entrechat quatre a beat before (I'm RAD) but that may not have been the real temanoligy.
Doesn't cinq end in a coupe I was taught that way
Hey Katie! I´m 15, and from Brazil, which means that even though I try really hard, I can´t get that routine with ballet, there are a few great schools, but none near me (big country too lol), well, I´ll try auditioning by video and all that but I can´t loose weight. I don´t look fat, but I´m not thin enough to achieve my goals, in schools, auditions and perfomances... I´m in your facebook group, and my family and I have always been eating healthy... Can you help me, I feel I´m running out of time....
i want you to teach me otther jumps
I want to quit ballet because it's too stressful, any tips?
ThatClassy Girl never give up on your dreams. Nothing worth having is easy. Stay strong. 😘
Yeah I might consider to just change schools
i think their being lifted up by someone or holding a bar
Antrachat six is not last. There is entrechat sept and huit
Your legs are so skinny! What do you suggest for lengthening out the calves? Thank you.
no se inglés!! 😢😢
Oh my teacher taught us the entrechat quatre was royale (idk if that’s the correct spelling)
Entrechat Royale is like a changement battu.
There’s a mistake on cinq
FYI: I believe that the world record is entrechat douze.
