This was my movie as a kid. I thought I was the only one who liked it too. This skate scene still gives me chills after all these years. This movie is fun, romantic and has heart. :)
Wonderful sequence. Not often you see a well - choreographed ensemble of roller skaters along with the legend, Gene Kelly. Different, off beat and a pleasure to watch.
The fusion of 40’s class, big band orchestra and elegance with 80’s new wave electro pop is fucking brilliant 👌🏻 this was my absolute favourite movie as a kid and I so wanted to be Kira!
I could never understand why this film was a flop , amazing music and Gene Kelly to top it of and still the public didn't like it, a real shame as years later you watch the film with lovely fond memories
The story was weak, but could have been better. What it lacked in dialogue, it made up for in visual effects and a killer soundtrack. Olivia, ELO &The Tubes!
@Darren T - I’m struggling to remember _precisely_ why it failed… what I mostly recall is that it followed a cluster of song-and-dance movie musicals of the late ‘70s also set in semi-contemporary milieus, most notably _Grease,_ which Olivia Newton-John also starred in. So in the context of that moment, _Xanadu_ suffered by direct comparison to those better films. I remember word-of-mouth portrayed it as a quick, cheap, knock-off written in a fortnight to capitalize on Ms. Newton-John’s moment in the spotlight, and that it was also perceived as having been shot quickly to cash in on the fleeting trend of roller disco. Some people may like the soundtrack, but upon release that was hardly the popular sentiment, and without a soundtrack or choreography as spectacular as _Grease_ had, _Xanadu_ only highlighted Ms. Newton-John’s limitations as an actor and the cheapness of every other aspect of production. But even if the film had gotten everything technical right, it had the further misfortune of arriving just as the audience had grown weary of every trend it cashed in on. It was basically a not-good film to begin with, which further had everything else working against it. But yes, I quite love the movie, and it makes me nostalgic too! The ‘70s were a blast, and we all thought we’d thrown off the shackles of old-fashioned thinking and were in the midst of reinventing the world… taking from tradition what worked, but throwing out the rest, and making the world better for all the people who’d been left behind. Little did we know that, in 1980, a terrible backlash against modernity would be manufactured from astroturf by people like a young Charles Koch and all his billionaire cronies, an artificial backlash created with ill-gotten lucre that would make the ‘70s seem like the future culturally, while 2016-2020 would wind up resembling some superstition-riddled medieval past… 😕
It’s simply not a good movie, no plot, uneven, no real character development. This scene, while interesting to look at, builds up to who knows what? The movie Grease, for example, had a simple story, discernible characters you cared about, humor, great, memorable musical scenes, that did not deviate in quality throughout the movie.
This movie really motivated me to skate when it came out back this..the rollar skating craze back then was on fire! Sadly the closures of rollar rinks signaled a quick ending😯 this movie freezes that special moment in time forever! I miss it very much
@@toby9999 We still have a couple nearby. Roller Towne in Visalia and United Skates in Clovis North of the Airport. Roller Towne has been around long enough that my dad, now 65, worked there as a teenager.
I was 20 when this movie came out and, won't lie, only went because the trailer showed Gene Kelly skatin' (and we were all doing that back then). Great bloke!
It makes good sense that Gene Kelly was part of the movie. Music and dance go hand in hand, and its only right he was there symbolicly to pass the torch.
Nearly all of my life, I've been in love with Gene Kelly, and that will never go away. Looking forward to when my daughter is old enough to watch this movie. In the meantime, I just have to get my husband to watch it.
So kitsch ......but strangely cool too. I love the late '70s disco costumes and the diverse and attractive cast. I know it's a film that people love to hate but it has actually become an unlikely time capsule of a culturally interesting time.
I saw this in theaters and loved it. The critics however were not so kind. It has hit the 35th anniversary mark. Say what you will, it entertained me. You just don't see musicals anymore. A pity.
The only issue was the cameras didn't capture Gene's fancy & velvety precision footwork. For some reason, they kept focusing mostly on his upper body while skating. Didn't they understand who this absolute Legend was? 😕
Wow! 1980! So I remember my uncle growing a huge bunch of pot, selling it (probably some other stuff too) and buying a new Camaro and an AK47 from Allred's Firearms, he also moved to Hawaii where he still lives today!
In 1980, Steadicam was new and cool...It still is. :) It's not often you can say a movie scene is "Definitely a product of its time" and mean it as a GOOD thing--You wouldn't say a classic musical was "too 40's", so why should Xanadu be "Too 80's"?
Gene Kelly was true superstar. I'm actually surprised he did this movie But ONJ just did this after grease. And she was such a fantasy of so many young men. And a lot of the music here was from ELO. The movie sucked, but the music and the dancing. They were just so great. I love watching stuff like this. Giggle, I'm so back in high school.
They have teeth like knives, and their eyes glisten with terror at the violence they know that they are capable of. Like some kind of sparkly, neon-lit Nuremberg rally. I am reminded, when I watch this film, of Schopenhauer: “Therefore with the same necessity with which the stone falls to the earth, the hungry wolf buries its fangs in the flesh of its prey, without the possibility of the knowledge that it is itself the destroyed as well as the destroyer.” This is what Xanadu means to me.
This movie gets dogged on a lot over the years but I've always liked it, if you were fans of ELO or Olivia Newton-John or Gene Kelly or all three of them then you definitely liked this movie
@@toby9999 yeah it's a fantasy musical movie about mythology and Greek gods and all that stuff, people just take it all too serious and think every movie has to be so literal
A movie written by people fueled by cocaine. A flop, and only the most hardcore fans can sit through it. My daughter did twice! We took her to see Olivia live at the casino in Immokalee back in 2017. So glad we did. When Olivia broke out into Xanadu, our daughter did her dance moves. So cute. I think Olivia never looked better than she did in this movie. There isn't a hetro man alive who wasn't in love with her. I was so sure she was going to beat the cancer by altering her body's pH. Sad that anyone die from cancer these days, especially with the knowledge of proven cures that have come to light..
Hey, boss, we got a new movie for yas to approve. What ya think? Hmm, seems young, fresh and hip. All it needs now is some over-the-hill has-beens. Is Gene Kelly still on the payroll? Yeah, that's the ticket.
This is my favorite scene in the movie. Who knew Gene Kelly could skate?

Gene Kelly skating at 68, like he did in "It's Always Fair Weather" 25 year's prior. Great job!
Gene Kelly was really having a good time.

Rollerskating has a 20 year cycle. It was big in the 30's, 50's, 70's, etc... The movie was made during a low point in skating interest.
