    My Dad was an elevator constructor for over 30 years. He worked for a small company. He retired from it a few years ago, and works as an elevator inspector now

      That’s a great transition or retired IUEC members. Local 1 IUEC here. Just finished my apprenticeship. My first 3 years was assisting my mechanic performing Cat 1 & Cat 5 tests. Met a lot of inspectors. All of them are retired members who are inspecting now and loving it.

      @miguelquazar883 Рік тому +2

      Not too late. Oldest I ever met was over 50 before he got in. I was 36. I would have tried earlier but I knew nothing about it and it was never on my mind until I saw a crew doing new construction on a jobsite and talked to them. It seemed interesting as hell. Now currently doing modernization and love it. I left a different trade I had just finished a 3rd year of an apprenticeship for. No reason to look back honestly. If you aren't afraid of hard work (at times) and soak up as much knowledge as possible, you'll do fine. There is New Construction, Modernization, Repair, and Service. You will find out what suits you and hopefully end up doing what you aim to. A lot of people forget that this tradw also builds and services escalators as well.
      The pay along with the benefits are truly some of the best you can come across without college education.

      You got your boots wet. Thats good. Look up your local chapter of the IUEC. Their website will have the name and number of the business rep. Call them. Explain your situation and skills and they will see about placing you when work is available. I dont know your area so i cannot give you time frame.

    • @miguelquazar883
      @miguelquazar883 Рік тому

      You basically have to wait until a local offers recruitment opportunities and then you apply during the time frame.
      However, I have seen people get in if they have experience in the trade or a brother with a good rep. puts in a good word etc.

    The Elevator trade is the top paying construction trade but one of their cons is that most of the mechanics are racists, believe me I know, I heard them say derogatory words to apprentices to get them to push back and quit the apprenticeship program because they prefer only one race in the union, again I know, I've done seen and heard it. If you take away those types of people from the union, this local would be top notch, the best union to join. Not sure how the other locals are but this one sure has its share of bad apples
