My dad was an elevator constructor for almost 40 years. He did a lot of different things. He would build elevators and repair them. Most of the time he would repair them. There were 25k elevator tradesmen in1976, don't let the numbers fool you. The companies keep back stabbers, suck ups, yes men, and cleaners. Plan on working around nine months out of the year if you work construction and plan on traveling. The pay scale and benefits are fantastic, don't depend on the union to back you.... read your standard agreement with the companies. Some locals will back you but not many. 1.7 per overtime as a service mechanic and 2.0 as a construction mechanic. There are many things to learn, six year apprenticeship, four hrs. a week then you are eligible for the mechanic's test. Elevator men gossip more than old women. I am now retired and do not miss the trade one bit, plan on your knees and back being pretty much worthless when you retire.
That's what I mean I want a job that will financially be excellent but have it not be enjoyable or take a huge toll on my body for retirement. And I do sports rn and I've got injured many times so I'm alr gonna have some issues when I'm Older😂😂
You forgot to mention that for the trades the quoted government stats averages across apprentices, journeymen, and master tradesmen. So the average you reported is actually low by about $20,000 for a fully licensed mechanic. I know that in Boston (IUEC Local 4) the base pay is over $62/HR and increases by contract at 3% per year.
@@iiTzGyln I believe it’s the highest paid trade in the country. I also believe the exact dollar amount depends on which zone you work in. I hired in at 50% of top scale and it’s just under 30$. Plus amazing benefits after 6 months and a pension. I hired in during my early 30s and I’d highly recommend it. If you get in while you’re that young and don’t waste your money, you will retire with crazy money in your retirement funds
I just got into crane mechanics and specialty electrical controls and walked right into no competition, over $150,000 a year, great benefits, no unions (keep all my money) and did just fine... I did not even graduate high school, I am also a machinist, electrician and mechanical engineer... Still no diploma.
I don’t know if it’s worth being a plumber or being a electrain or being a elevator mechanic, it’s dangerous espically for electricians and espically elevator mechanics it decreased in employed people cause lots of people quit the elevator union and went south to the plumber union cause u don’t die or get injured . People died in NYC the headline scared people outta going for elevator mechanics
2024 6 months as an apprentice, with all benefits included I will gross around 100k before taxes….there is a pre requisite test with reading, math, and tool test….then you will be ranked…this job is not for the lazy or the weak hearted….but worth it if you can stay focused
Been in the trade 3 years now love this shit you learn something new everyday. Shit does get tough you got guys on your ass some mechanics don’t help you learn, I’m in Chicago new construction the winters are brutal and it is very dangerous a lot of things can happen. You can’t be soft in this shit they will talk shit about you it’s a small trade definitely hard to get in if you don’t have family or friend in the trade. Good coordination, no fear of heights is also key.
Good to hear . Question, I’m thinking about making a change in careers. I’m currently a railroad worker in NYC. I’m thinking about applying again for Local 1. Is there a age limit where they won’t accept you?
I live in Las Vegas and was thinking about going to trade school for it but seeing the map of salaries I thought it would be a lot higher since they are always broken on the strip lol
I feel that the reason for not many businesses is that of because of the low employment rate and will definitely change over time I am currently working towards an electrical career but I am heavily interested in elevator mechanic, (might give it a shot), I will try to start my own business along the way for sure, Great video btw
I tried to get into the elevator trade, but they didn't want me. I was in my 30's, a navy vet and had a strong background as a licensed factory electrician/mechanic with PLC and installation experience. I wrote letters and sent out a number of resumes but never heard a thing. Like any other good job that's hard to get, you have to know somebody to get you in, and if you don't know anybody, too bad
I'm 17 and been trying to research joining this industry my dad was an engineer and is getting a good word in for me with people he knows. I like hands on work and eager to learn stuff that i can work on that isn't sitting at a desk all day would i be good in this/have a good chance of joining?
Thank you for video. Can you give me some advice for classes or some job in union in Georgia I have some experience in Belarus with install and maintenance elevators so I want to have the job in USA in Georgia elevators. Thank you for advice.
You have to apply online. And then you will be set up for a three point test. Algebraic Function, Mechanical Aptitude and Reading Comprehension. If you pass those tests then you will be set up with an in person interview before the apprenticeship representatives. After your interview, you will be given a score or ranking. Oh and if you get called to join. Be ready to be on a One Year Probationary Period. And you have to attend Probation Meetings once every month for that whole year.
If any mechanics are reading do you typically work alone or in a team? Can you have a partner? Brother and I are thinking about getting into the trade and were wondering if we would be allowed to work together as a team or is that usually not how it works? We dont care if we have to work separately just wondering if this job allows for partners. Thanks!
Depends on the department. Most of the time it’s one mechanic and one helper. Service mechanics work by themselves more often. If you’re on a big construction or mod job there may 30 40 or 50 men on the job. Again, it’s normally 1:1 mechanic to helper. Sometimes 2:1.
How about a woman getting into the field? Is it more difficult? I'm training as an electrician and I haven't heard of any women around in elevator mechanics
There are definitely women in this trade. I've worked with a couple. One of the women I worked with was an Adjuster and I was her Helper. An Adjuster is someone who does all the final TLC and tests on the elevator to get it ready for an inspector. And then also goes through all the tests with the inspector and then finally turns it over for final operation. She was very smart.
