My dad started his own Septic company, he started with 2 trucks, using his yard as his office, back in 2008/2009, now he has over a dozen trucks, his own mechanic, a 5 acre office plot, 4 office workers, a dispatcher, and he no longer goes out on jobs, he is the CEO and has managers under him running everything. My dad spends his day dropping by work sites (especially on rookies or less performing workers). He isnt even done, he has a 2 other location, one is a seperator place that preprocesses the waste, that is then directly tied to city sewer, the other place is an actual disposal place so now other smaller companies can come to him for cheaper waste than what the city offers. My dad is a genius.

@OdennaTnL Marion Pumpers in Florida. I would be working with him now that O retired from Marine Corps, but I'm married to Japanese woman and we have 2 school aged kids, it would be very challenging to take them out of Japanese School system and put them in American one. They are good with English, but they wouldn't know much about history, and common core is not a thing in Japan, they still use the same stuff I grew up with probably a little more advanced. My wife wants to stay in Japan as well. So it's my turn to support, since she supported me for over 18 years of my career.

Not a genius your dad is a man who had a plan, discipline, and hard work ethic. Business mindset to grow. I respect your admiration for your father but nothing he did was a mind blowing idea, I’m sure he doesn’t like you calling him a genius. He probably just wants you to work hard, learn his business and eventually take it over. He made your path very straightforward don’t take it for granted and learn how to keep that business growing.

@@dontevntrip8627 I agree. Please excuse for over simplifying it with a simple word, LoL. Truly, you said it correctly. I just retired from military career, my youngest still has another 5 years when she is done with school. We live in Japan, my kids are half Japanese and half whatever I am (LoL). My kids want to stay in their Japanese schools, I am this one time fulfilling their request seeing I my military career had us moving around every few years, its the first time they get to experience staying in one place. I really want to get back home and help him, I'd be the only kid he has that would be keeping the business in his name out of 3 sons. My younger brothers are doing their own thing and doing pretty well, they are into tile work and land clearing (Florida the vegetation is wild).

Costs for equipment? Cost for gaining knowledge/certificates? Taxes? Emergency fund for low business months or unexpected repairs?

Most people either do not understand the power of compound interest, or are just impatient. For the average Joe, however. I think it is just best to invest in the S&P 500, and just wait, which is reliable, albeit extremely long-lots of years. Or just use a professional analyst and speed up wealth creation. Most people underestimate the power of the latter

They can save that $40 if they want to carry the new toilet up and the old toilet down. Even though I don’t carry the old one down, I just put it in the box the new one came in and slide it down the stairs. I joke with people and tell them that $40 is my knee replacement fund. IF your customers were restaurants with quick access tanks/traps and you were in a big enough city to have hundreds of them, you might knock out 4 or 5 a day. You have to dump it somewhere, usually the water service company. It has to be close by for a quick turn around. I've seen this same estimate by other youtubers which makes me think they're just copying each other. It's still a decent business idea bit it's going to take longer to pay for that truck than he suggests. If it breaks, you are down until it's repaired. Journeyman Tool & Die Maker, 4 years of night school, can set-up and run almost every piece of equipment you can think of, manual and CNC, milling, turning and grinding up to 5 axis. And it meant nothing to any company. Shut your mouth and push the button. Unless of course they were in trouble and then I was constantly called on to fix or troubleshoot their issues. That is one of the main complaints I hear from people.
The best part of my job is to be able to meet so many incredible people as well as some not so incredible 😂 and being outside breathing fresh air everyday! The worst parts of my industry is the weather and the weather forecasters since they always get it wrong and still get paid.

Even at $300/tank, just 5 stops/day would bring in $1500/day. $10.5K/wk x 50 weeks (gotta have vacation time😋) = $525,000.00/year. Taxes, dump fees and overhead would take half of that and you would still end up with $262,500.00. Take another 20% from that balance for unforeseeable circumstances and you're still clearing $210,000. Less than 10% of the population makes that in a year. And that's just one truck. Food for thought.

I used to work/help my cousin with his septic business. It truly is dirty business. Alot of time what would happen is pump inside septic tank would fall off its concrete blocks. We would literally lower a person in by their feet to grab ahold of pump and put it back on its block. When we would raise them out....they would literally have sh!! in their hair. My cousin the owner always told me he would eat bag of sh!! for $5 so you have to really be money driven in life to take that business on.

I know barbers who make as much as dentists since they’ve set up a shop with 8 barber chairs and take 30% of everything since they’ve got all of the other barbers on straight commission at 70%. Then also, any merchant seaman in either the deck or engine department with three years’ experience can sit for their officer’s examination and go up to over $150,000 per year to start as either a 3rd assistant engineer or a 3rd mate in the deck department. Even the cook gets unlimited overtime and can easily get promoted to chief steward, or really the supply officer. And these are only jobs that I’ve done myself. The one job I did for 7 years which required a degree was so pathetic, that is teaching school, that I quit to go join the seafarer’s union in 1988.

The trucks are always in need of repairs and if your new you will get worst truck they have. With these types of jobs you need to have a good grasp on social skills. Plummer on the other hand no setup cost. Electrician is better because you have a licence so you are not competing with DIYs. Waterproofing means that you can be sued if it doesn’t work. Diesel compressor is good because it is niche. Diesel mechanic is not mentioned but if you work on big trucks like Peterbuilt it is very well paid. Car mechanic can be good if you specialize in BMW or Mercedes.

These new contractors are desperate for work and the contractors skip out and don;'t pay. The only people who actually make money consistently for decades consistently are plumbing and heating companies becasue they do so much repairs. You have to fix your furnace and water heater. Electricians do mostly new installations and there is lots of competition.

Personally i would never take advice from someone who's not in the trade you are interested in, go work in that trade to see if you even like it enough to pursue, doesn't matter how much it pays if you hate doing it everyday.

In some states the additional wage related expenses a company can have approaches an additional 30 to 40 per cent of whatever the wages are that you are paying. Obviously as you said very well, if you work for yourself some of those costs will be less.

I apprenticed under a residential and small business painter for a couple years and before I did that I was pressure washing homes and businesses. Now I own Brook’s Paint & Pressure Washing. In the next five years I’m going to sale my company and use the funds and build a commercial and industrial coatings company, or transition my company into a commercial & industrial coatings company by restructuring.

I work for an air compressor company as a field service tech. No diesel motors on the really big stuff, and that’s where the money is at. We operate mostly in manufacturing plants, hospitals, and research labs that use massive compressors and Vacuum pumps. Our industry is STRUGGLING so hard to find good quality/smart tech’s, and the good ones we do have are compensated generously. 120k salary is easily achievable if you’re willing to put in the work. that’s working for a company, not owning or operating one.
