What Jeff said at the end is very true. Boating is hard if you want to di it right, and this goes for a proper lithium install. If you want easy buy a daysailer.

Years ago in a workshop, I heard the presenter say “Hope is not a strategy.” Have never forgotten that.

Great video, thank you. But you guys have talked about the risks of dropping in lithium ion as replacements for lead acid (which I am/was literally just about to do) without saying much about what we should do instead. Shame as I do really need that info.

I just swapped AGM for Lithium. I hope I did it all correctly. I think the hardest part is setting up the charge profiles in all the charge sources. I just installed a Balmar 250A alternator with external regulator that I still need to program. I think I will derate it to 200A. It's connected directly to the 800Ah bank with 4/0 wire but since the max charge on the batteries is 250A I don't want to be that close. I may derate it further once I test it out.

I have 2-200ah chins with 100a bms's I charge them with 3 265 w thru a 40 amp mppt. I can charge with my xantrex inverter but in San Diego temperature never freezing and may see 100 in my engine room. Solar is doing a great job with my 2 reefers but never draw down over 39 % of batteries..what is the danger as long as I charge to 14.4 v. ?

So what should you do once you drop them in? Isolate them? Ive dropped in 2-100 amp hour LifePo4 batteries and everything seems to work fine. I have purchased a Magnum inverter/charger and pllan to run everything possible theough it. I can replace the alternator if necessary.

At 2:25 you say that the lithium batteries went into "protection" mode due to overcharging, so the boaters lost their house batteries. I assume that the lithium batteries would resume function once the charging voltage is removed (engine turned off), and the batteries are put under load. Correct?

Sounds like the issue might have been with their charge controller / voltage regulator not the batteries. Battery BMS should automatically reset itself after a couple minutes and try again. I'm a fan of only charging to 90%, batteries last longer and less likely to run into a cell over voltage situation. Top them off to 100% as needed to keep their cells balanced but this doesn't have to be the standard routine like is needed w/ lead.

It's an 8 minute video. Why would you need to drink coffee half way through?

Well there are certainly also stories to be told about a Lead battery that has collapsed underway, and left the boat and crew with no "house-battery".
Why blame the battery for the fact that alternator manufactureres rate their alternators higher than their actual continous capacity?
    Very biased content.
