Oh boy am I glad to have stumbled onto this. I've had copies of Nigel's books going back to 1979 I think, and the fact you are speaking here with him is wonderful. I'm in the process of desiring to convert my 42' motor sailer from diesel to batteries (w/a diesel generator, wind and solar backup,) so anything I can come up with question-wise will likely be discussed herein. My perspective includes 60+ years on mostly Alaskan waters commercial fishing and sailing merchant marine, so I know you'll be covering pertinent bases. Agin, glad I found this!
You two talking about redundancies: I'm there. And Nigel, I'm plumbing in my generator to run hydraulics---including a separate anchor winch.
Excellent advice -
JC re balance & compensating sailing against repairs & costs
NC Re age & cruising & planning
Both of you about redundancy.
Sound opinions & a great article.

Thank you (and Mr. Calder) for this excellent series!!!
This is not on topic but I respect your opinion. If an encapsulated lead keel has let go of it’s fiberglass covering can I drill holes in the bottom of the keel to remove any water. Dry it over several months. Then pour in from the bilge side after opening it, that penetrating epoxy to fill any small voids and to rebound the keel to the lead ballast?
Jeff, really enjoy the videos, very informative. I have a question? I have a 1992 Carver 430 CPMY. I want to install solar to charge 2 lithium 300 AH batteries and want to have the ability to run my 110 V systems on board except A/C while anchoring. I am thinking to install a total separate battery bank from the current house / start battery bank. Can I install a 3000-watt inverter and simply plug into my shore power outlet with an adapter from the inverter to the shore power receptacle on the vessel? Is this a suitable method? I currently do it with a 3500 watt portable generator and all seems to run fine.
