  • I bet once you learned there wasn't any new lore in the OSTs you thought my video on it would be way shorter than this! I should be annoyed at the lack of faith in me but I think Takahashi is onto something; it's way more fun to betray expectations in a good way.

    THIS is why Xenoblade is so good. Everybody who works on these games wants to create something truly special.

    I don't quite know how to put this, but Takahashi's foreword about "Carrying the Weight of Life" music really resonated with me. It's one of the reasons why I find Xenoblade music so good, but why I only recommend it to certain people, but explained in a way I couldn't. In a way, it's a reflection of the games themselves
    Additional note: I remember seeing a post a while back on how "Sawano mentioned in his fanclub blog that he feels his work on Xenoblade X ended up forming the basis for his sound for all his soundtrack works afterwords"

    Yutaka Kunigo only composed two tracks for Xenoblade 3, but one of those was "Ultimate Enemy", the incredible Seraphic Ceratinia battle theme, and that was his very first composing credits. Based just on that, I think he's got real potential as a composer, so I hope he can write more music for the next game.

      Didn't know the Seraphic Ceratinia theme was done by a different composer, that's actually pretty neat. Although I think the trinity box is the first time I've heard the whole theme since Xenoblade 3 is itself, and even if we ignore all the shouting, enemies don't last very long lol

    Regardless of where Xenoblade goes in the future, there's a couple things the series does really well that I hope is kept going forward: large and visually surreal worlds to explore, and highly emotionally engaging story events. Both are the big reasons why I'm a fan of this entire series. Mitsuda's musical talent has done a lot for the series, but if he won't come back for the next one, I think we're in great hands and Future Awaits definitely feels like the culmination of all his work throughout the entire Xeno metaseries and would work well as a sendoff.

    Honestly, if next game's soundtrack is headed by Abounassr, Hiramatsu, Kiyota, and Kunigo, I would not be the least bit disappointed. They're all absolute masters of their craft. Of course I DEFINITELY would not complain if ACE and Mitsuda stuck around!

    man, how could Mitsuda think he's superfluous to xenoblade? Ace's sound may be xenoblade, but Mitsuda's sound IS Xeno. His return to XB2 gave the game that added flavor that was missing since he left Xenosaga.
    I respect his choice to leave if he wishes to do so but I really hope he can see how much he has brought to the series as a whole.

    • @jacobmonks3722

      Agreed. His efforts in XC2 and XC3 have resulted in some of my favorite motifs, callbacks, and just general sounds out of all the music I've ever heard. The themes for Elysium and the Off-Seers, as well as their many derivatives, are going to be playing in my head endlessly for the rest of my life.
      However, I would be more than happy to hear if Yuki Kajiura made another Xeno soundtrack. Her work on Xenosaga 2 and 3 is just as good as Mitsuda's work in some ways.

    With the themes of cycles and of letting the next generation continue carry the torch, I feel like (assuming Xenoblade X turns into a trilogy) X being composed by Sawano, and how it was what cemented his style moving forward... wouldn't it be fitting to have X2 composed by both Sawano and a bit of Kohta Yamamoto, and X3 mostly by Kohta Yamamoto with a bit of Sawano?

    I like that each game has it's own personality music wise and that's been the way since the beginning. Xenosaga's 3 soundtracks were very different from each other in particular. Mitsuda's work From Xenogears to Xenosaga Episode 1 have very different vibes. Not to mention the lack of music in many of Episode 1's levels make the atmosphere very eerie at points. Yuki Kajiura's music from episode 2 has this very tribal electronica feel compared to episode 3's more ethereal and heroic songs. Even Shinji Hosoe's music in episode 2 could have a very haunting vibe to it, when it's not out of place some of the time since he was pretty obviously rushed on that soundtrack. Though I can't recommend his battle themes for that game more, they're really good especially the boss theme.
    The Xenoblade series is a bit more homogenous by comparison, probably due to the same composers working on all of the main series games for the most part, but each game has it's own distinct tone it's going for with it's music. I'll be honest though give me another Sawano like soundtrack because Xenoblade X's soundtrack is very underrated. It's very jarring at first, but the more I listened to it the more it stuck in my head. I'm definitely looking forward to the direction they'll take for Xenoblade 4's music, but I would also like Xenogears, Xenosaga, and Xenoblade X to be rereleased so more people can hear their soundtracks.
    Also if or when Xenosaga remastered or DE is announced they need to use either Fatal Fight/Episode 2's image theme song or Communication breakdown. When I think Xenosaga those 2 songs come to mind the most. I like Battling KOS-MOS from Episode 1 and Here She Comes and Promised Pain from Episode 3 a lot as well, but the other two hands down are my favorite trailer songs for the series. Also they have a very bad habit of using the final boss theme in trailers for these games, so I'd really like them to keep Promised Pain out of it since it's the last freaking boss of the series' theme.

    I greatly admire what Monolith Soft was able to accomplish with Xenoblade Chronicles (and Definitive Edition), and Xenoblade Chronicles 2; XC: DE and XC2, along with Torna: The Golden Country, are excellent games with wonderful gameplay and stories.
    XC3, on the other hand...eh. It's still damn good, but I just can't say it lives up to its predecessors - it's shorter than the previous two, and there's not as much customisation per character; changing Arts, skills, accessories, and gems (out of a small pool of 20 options, that last one, and quite a few gem effects are mediocre compared to 1 and 2's gems/aux cores). 1 allowed you to change each armour piece and weapon, and some had gem slots, allowing for a ton of additional effects; 2 had aux cores, core chips, accessories, Blade elements chosen (up to three per character, for 9 total). XC2's pouch items, a lot of which were food, affected combat in various ways; XC3's cooking does not. Time-based cooldowns in 3 also take way too long, compared to the auto-attack ones; back in 1, the timer was balanced out by the sheer number of arts available to pick from, instead of a measly 3. I also much prefer 2's chain attacks to 3, as it didn't rely on luck so much, and actually tied into regular combat by way of Blade Special orbs - and 2's chain attacks also didn't replace boss music.

    I think Mitsuda can pass his torch and things will be in good hands if that's what he wants to do.. and if he truly doesnt want to work on Xenoblade, maybe Takahashi will accept that going forward.
    However.. I guess I also hope Mitsuda realises that Takahashi considers him and his work to be part of Xeno's identity. To Takahashi (and probably some fans), it's more than just Xeno being fine without Mitsuda. It's that Xeno is Xeno partially thanks to the voice Mitsuda lends to it, and that's important to Takahashi.

    I usually say this, but I wouldn't be opposed if Monolith used the end of the Klaus "chronicle" to nurture up another series to have in their portfolio. Not that I want them to do away with Xenoblade, but I think it would be healthy for them and for Xenoblade itself to not have the company (the part that makes their own games, I mean) be a one-trick-blade.

    Hey Luxin, 1 and X are definitely not shonen-style. If anything, 3 is more shonen with all the villain tropes (even Sea of Stars joked about it with 1-4) and let's not forget the absolutely ridiculous shonen trope of "the evillest of them all is you or a past version of you or your father" (even Scott Pilgrim and Star Wrs got that one...). 2 is effectively the shonneniest of course. I would argue Torna, FC and FR are too short to be really anything, they're its own thing, whith clearly filler purpose. Can't even consider them shonen.

    • @jacobmonks3722
      @jacobmonks3722 Рік тому +4

      "Shonen" is not one single style. Shonen only describes the audience that the story is geared towards, namely young boys. But the trends of Shonen over time have demonstrated that the style, themes, and tone can still vary widely. One Piece is nothing like Fullmetal Alchemist, which is nothing like Dragon Ball, which is nothing like Bleach, which is nothing like Demon Slayer. They all came from different time periods, and so they reflected the trends of that time. The same is true of Xenoblade. In the late 00s, Shonen stories very much did have the same tropes, themes and ideas seen in the first Xenoblade Chronicles. In the mid-10s, the trends evolved a bit, leading to the much more lighthearted tone that XC2 employs, seen in stories like My Hero Academia. XC3 continues that trend. It feels like The Promised Neverland or Vinland Saga in terms of tone and atmosphere. Melancholic and bleak at times, but there are moments to remind you that hope exists.
      Xeno, in its entirety, has never been afraid to wear its inspirations on its sleeves. For Gears, it was Gnostic mysticism and Freudian psychology. For Saga, it was Neitzche-inspired philosophy and Jungian archetypes, with some Judeo-Christian tradition thrown in for good measure. And for Blade, it is very obviously reminiscent of the themes and styles of Shonen manga and anime.
      X is an outlier in many regards, and I can't really speak much about it, considering I haven't played through it yet.

    • @cldpt
      @cldpt Рік тому +1

      @@jacobmonks3722 I agree, and I guess I should be mostly referring to X in my original comment. Blade 1 definitely had some tropes (even one I mentioned was exclusive to 3 about the main villain being a "past version of oneself"), but I still think Blade 1 was tame for the shonen-related tropes of that particular time - and I say this having played it 1-2y after release and having a background of 15y before that watching mostly anime as my primary media consumption other than JRPGs, basically in the final years of university where I still binged all that and actually had the time !_! ). You get a revenge-focused story which is very uncommon right from the get go of most shonen (even today). You get a cast of what then were not huge stereotypes (outside of Shulk, who's pretty much Edward from FMA indeed, but Reyn? Sharla? Even Melia. Dunban was a trope of the Xeno series itself - Citan, Jin, later Lau and I'd argue Noah himself). You get a setting that was so surprising at the time (for games or anime alike) it was the main talking and marketing point of the game. But then of course, you get the phlebotinum sword and main character, the Deus Ex Machina, the anime betrayal, the comic relief characters and even the unexpected revival. And nearly as important, you get them mechas, to fight against in this case (but that one is also a staple of the series as a whole, albeit X and Saga 2-3 did it BEST, maybe also Gears).
      I still think Blade 2, and to a lesser degree 3 fit the shonen shoe best. Yes, they still have the "high philosophy" somewhere deep down there but they certainly get the most commercial appeal because they were literally targeting the audience that, effectively, still has time to play those games - mid-teens to young adults, mostly male although really that line is now blurred. Which is great, and I do think from Xenosaga onwards Monolith has made it easier for any gender to appreciate their games, if a bit excessive on the tiddies and scantily clad Blade 2 is known for. X and 1 really avoid that low hanging fruit, and so does 3 but 3 then falls into other problems I already mentioned.

    Yggdrasil from Xenoblade 2 is one of my favorite tracks in all of the Xeno- series, Gears included. Thanks for playing it in the background.
