I gotta admit. These two released one of the greatest albums of all time. Seriously. I listened to Cold Vein as much as I listened to 36 Chambers or Illmatic or Cuban Linx or Death Certificate.
When I think of Cannibal Ox, I think of improvisational jazz. They practiced hip hop like any jazz musician does, but they are able to adjust on the fly while recording and have the end product still come out like it was MEANT to be. For those who don't know or are ignorant of hip hop music, there was a time when it wasn't made for everyone; not every song was meant to become a hit, but for the integrity of artistic expression. This artistic expression was born from poverty, neglect, abuse and marginalization, whether experienced or observed. If it caught on an became a hit, then so be it. During this time, there were sub-genres of hip hop that appealed to various segments of the hip hop community; the most popular sub-genre that became the definition of what hip hop is was "gangsta rap" as it was the top money maker due to its content which appealed to a larger portion of music listeners (mostly suburban) and was invested in heavily. To the young cats, just do the research and realize hip hop is not really what you hear on the radio these days; rather, it is popular music. Making popular music doesn't necessarily guarantee that you are are an artist. An artist generally doesn't make the most money and won't be heard by the masses, but their work lasts the longest. That's why us 'old heads' keep listening to our stuff because the shit is simply timeless. At some point in the future, you guys will dig through the files and appreciate the essence of what hip hop was and begin to build off the foundation after the popular flavor of day goes in another direction. Sadly, the popular music being manufactured today is made strictly for today and won't be remembered 10-20 years down the line.
I never caught that reincarnation thing on raspberry fields maybe that’s obvious but him really messing up makes it like wait so how was it planned? Or it just happened to line up is that what he’s saying
You can tell these guys are not afraid to dive into the plasma pool. I'm talking about penetration beyond the veil of the flesh. A deep penetrating dive into the plasma pool.
“I don’t have an end piece” that song is my shit

To this day Cold Vein remains one of my all time favorite albums
