I will be following up this lesson shortly with the appropriate ways to respond to the questions we practiced in the video.
Also, remember to vote by leaving a comment below on the highlighted color in the second part of the video. Did you like it? Or do you like the original?
Also, even if you are a brand new beginner or have been studying Chinese for awhile. I recommend checking out both the YCT and HSK series found here
    amzn.to/49a3U0h
    and here
    amzn.to/3OfIN4M
Amazing books with a structured method to learning Chinese vocabulary, grammar, and practice that closely resembles spoken Chinese.

I don't care about the color. I just wanted to leave you a comment cause it's supposed to help the algorithm spread the video to others. You're doing a great job. Keep it up!

The yellow is better, something that contrasts well with black is needed, not something that contrasts with the background so much.
These videos have really enhanced my learning all round 😁

    A great thought-provoking lesson !!
Most people teach the "是...的 construction" as describing the manner (when/where/how) in which something was done. This works well in most cases. For example:
    爸爸是什么时候来的?= "When did dad come?"
This is called the ‘active voice’, where the subject of the verb is the doer of the action.
However, there is an interesting rule in Chinese grammar which says:
« If the subject of the verb cannot perform the action of the verb, then the ‘passive voice’ is implied. »
This applies to most examples in this lesson. Here is another example:
爸爸是什么时候接的?= "When was dad picked up?" (dad cannot pick himself up)

I have found that, if the item after 是 is a person, then that person is the doer of the action, so the 是...的 construction simply serves as the passive voice.
So, although 电视是谁弄坏的? can be translated as "Who broke the TV?"
grammatically, it means "Who was the TV broken by?" (passive voice) (TV can't break itself).
The active voice would be 谁弄坏了电视?

I love it. Such a clear explanation. The next couple of lessons will be on this method. But there could be so many more based on the items that you discussed.
Honestly, this is one of the first sentence structures I learned . At first it was confusing, but once later it came more natural when to use it. Your explanation makes a lot of sense when I think back on how I’ve used it versus the more active phrases, as you described. Thanks again.
