How are you enjoying Kodak Gold 200 120?

I love this. I also shoot a RB 67. I shoot a lot of family portraits, and I did a little experiment with my digital and my RB. I did 10 of my portraits with both cameras. I used the same lighting same poses. I would shoot the film then immediately do the same shot with my Canon 5D. I had the customers come back to check out the images both in hard copy and on the computer. I didn't tell them which was which. 8 of the 10 chose the film shots. I asked them why they choose what they did and every one of them said it looked softer and warmer. and seemed to have more of what a portrait should look like. Since I had done minimal adjustments in post I asked why they didn't liike the others. they for the most part said the pictures looked too sharp and not what they expected. I know this was a terribly non scientific experiment but it proves why I like film. I also like the hands on feel loading the film taking the extra care to make the shot perfect the 1st time because of cost and then the "Christmas" aniticipation of if I was a good boy and got it all right I got the gift of a great image. If I was a bad boy I got a sack of coal.

You're onto something. I shoot editorials. I will shoot both digital and film and may the best shot win. Often times the magazines like the film shots over the digital shots. I don't even disclose to them what medium I am using. They just pick their favorites, which is often times film.
I own the Canon R5 and the RF lenses, which are insanely sharp. It does give me a modern commercial look, but sometimes it's too sharp. Often times film is just right.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leaving great feedback!

Using a R5 as a light meter. This is gold! Great commentary, fantastic exposures. New sub.

Yeah. Quite the light meter! I also have it on hand in case 1) I end up liking my digital shots better and 2) in case something happens to the film I still have something to give to the client / modeling agency.
I usually use my tiny FUJI XT20 to test with. A lot lighter.
      Thanks for the watch!

@@KevinDeal have you tested Ektar 100? My local film lab sells it pretty cheap compare to portra and gold.

@@jgonz1997 yes! At 2: 13, 15: 05, 15: 18 of my RB67 video that you watched, I throw up some examples of it. Most people like it for landscapes, but I think it looks fantastic on portraits too. It's a very fine-grained film stock.

Hmm… why would you go through all the hassle of using film when digital is so flexible both raw files and converters? I used to shoot on Kodak Portra for commercials and business portraits Mamiya 645 and large format. Yes it took some time for digital to get mature but today we can tweak and save presets to get the a specific look. I also have the R5 and use Capture One, the Canon RF lenses are fantastic especially the ones you have. We can get different film looks with these tools. Is it really worth the time and effort to use film now? How do you reason, enlighten me? Love your work 💪😀

    • @KevinDeal

Thanks for watching and the compliments.
The short answer is digital can do a pretty good job of getting me close with color to film. Digital still does a very poor job of emulating grain structure and the nuances of an emulsion.
In the end it doesn’t look the same to me. I love both. So I shoot both.
Sounds like a good topic for a future episode.

      @martinekwall4671 2 роки тому +1

@@KevinDeal I see what you mean. When we are in to those subtle things. Have you tested Capture One, their grain structures are pretty flexible and advanced?
The grading tool in C1 is quite ok but if I want to grade I actually rather target a color and change the saturation lightness and tone. But I understand now what you mean with a film emulsion. It’s a quest for sure to simulate film.

@@martinekwall4671 yeah. Definitely a Capture One user over here. Love the program. It does a pretty good job. I can still tell the difference though.
