Afte r nearly 10 years of listening to the youtubers tell me the camera was too heavy to use much in the field and it had to be carried in an inconvenient, slow to access backpack that I hated putting in the sand, I finally started upgrading my pro s to sd backs to eliminate the constant fear of light leaks, and kl lenses. So wanted to carry it more out of studio. I use a black rapid strap on a mamiya 645 pro sd which weighs 5 lbs with elf and motor drive vs 6 lbs for the rb with lens and back. No place to attach the safety strap on the BR, so tried using the optech strap cross body. HOLY COW! It can rest on my R hip taking weight off, wrapping around chest and back took off more and it can be lightly be supported with the r hand or pressed against the hip to lighten it further. I now carry it for 3-4 hours no problem. When it instantly swings into position for shooting, I pop the finder and magnifier and cock the shutter and am ready to focus and shoot. I advance the film after each shot but not cock the shutter so no accidental firing, can't see through the viewfinder till it is cocked so am reminded to cock the shutter and if I don't use the camera and put it away, both mirror and lens springs aren't cocked. Thanks for all your videos, great to hear from folks inside the business who know what they are talking about instead of some bozo unboxing and taking first shots who doesn't have a clue wasting my time.
Great job with this one Nico! You had some really great light during this shoot! I'd love to see you do more photo walk type videos!
Happy to see another video from you. Your last video about the Rochester/Alaris conspiracy gave me a lot of hope about the future of color film. I would love if you could continue giving updates on that topic. Other news that gave me hope were that Kodak is involved in developing new largeformat cinema cameras and even talks about bringing back Vistavision.
Having watched pretty much all available videos on using the RB in the field I think you have nailed it. Not a “What’s up” to be heard, used a tripod, was a considered and thoughtful narrative and, most of all, you ended up with some well considered and thoughtful images . 10/10
waitet a long time to see you enjoying phototography again, was a long time. would love to see more of that!
I prefer small cameras and lenses. Laziness, well developed, size and weight of RB /RZ is monumental. I've used Mamiya Twin lens mostly in studio. Some big advertising work and Industrial assignments. In Film it was Pentax, Nikon and Leica-M. I once had to copy some large photo mural, a collage of family images! I used Pentax 6x7, 135mm Macro-Takumar and a Spotmatic with 50mm Macro. Prints professionaly printed as Colour. 20x30cm and bigger, I could see no difference! The printer did but it was subtle! No more tripod, no more Big camera. Digital ushered in a new era. Film is beautiful, but clean images can be nicer and way more economical. I still use film! Any important work, is now digital. Perfect dupes, colours same in reprints.. I enjoyed! Need to see more people shots! Walks are my everyday!
Love it Nico!!!
more of these videos Nico!
Glad you are having fun out there shooting some film Nico. The scenery around you certainly looks great for pictures, or just for a nice walk. Nice video.
nice video nico! thanks for share!
Great video and commentary. I always cock the shutter on my RZ (advance the film) and use the dark slide to prevent accidentally tripping the shutter release. I use a neck strap to steady the camera outside - the rig is already heavy enough without dragging around a tripod. Plus I don’t need to stand on my tiptoes to look through the viewfinder. So, why bother? The 6 x 7 form factor perfectly fits an 8 x 10 piece of enlarging paper. No cropping in the darkroom! And the detail of architecture and outside things is unbelievable.
I like the calm, composition and the colors.
Mola ver cositas diferentes, a tope Nico!
We want more 👏👏 Nice shot..
really appreciate the "get out and shoot" video! so important for us to keep in mind
Thanks for this. I enjoy seeing Finland through your lenses (and eyes). The RB is an interesting thing. I know little about and thank you for showing it at work.
Nico .. I enjoyed this. Take out the 4x5 sometime.
Remember : Meter for the shadows , Develop for the Highlights.
Nice upload, Nico. It would be better if labs offered raw scans as a routine part of C-41 development. In my experience C-41 is too “maleable” for someone who wasn’t there to edit it. Feedback or notes are necessary. Slides are more “objective.” I’ve been more pleased with lab scans of slides.
By the way, how does the ground glass on the RB compare to a Yashica 635 if you’ve ever used one? Focusing quickly at f5.6 or wider can be a chore with my Yashica.
Thanks Daniel! The Mamiya screen is amazing, only beat by a good Hasselblad one. Night and day with the Yashica, try getting an Oleson one for yours.
Nice to see the beautiful light of Finland. Hey, maybe consider the RB67 KL 90MM F/3.5 L. I absolutely love using the 90mm on my 6x7. So easy to switch from architecture to environmental portrait.
Thank you for the video! Very relaxing vibe, but it encouraged me for returning to medium format. Looking for square shots is really hard for me, so I decided to try 6x4.5 next roll. Waiting for the next video!
Always like the photo walk videos.
Great video. 👍
I just looked at what was available in your video library and was very impressed with the variety of topics. In addition to the RB67 and RZ67 mentioned in this video, you have videos about Leica rangefinders, Hasselblad SLRs, Hasselblad XPan, 4x5 large format film cameras, 8x10 large format film cameras, TLR medium format cameras, Nikon 35mm SLRs, Pentax 35mm SLRs, Pentax medium format SLRs, and many others. Plus, you also develop your own film.
Great timing. I just collected an RB to accompany my RZ. I'm sure they'll make great friends.
Do yourself a favor and grab one of the Mamiya mirror-up double cable releases from the store. They’re great, much nicer shooting experience than finger on the shutter and cable release in the other hand.
You are not wrong, I have one, but after moving here its in one of the many unopened boxes...
Wow this was suprisingly useful, I just bought the rb and I actually live in Finland too so this video was perfect for me😂
RB67 is my main film camera. Yes, it's heavy but it's worth it.
Nice to see you shooting again Nico! Film photography, that's what it's all about right?
Cool photos- you should do more of this
Pues me ha gustado este vídeo! Se te echaba de menos el hacer estas cosas. Salir y disparar. Y ya, cuando tengas montao el laboratorio….a positivar, y si es color….👌
Yes! Love to see more videos like this. I have an RB67 ProSD as well, with the Sekkor C 140 and 50 lenses. I know you said you gave up on 4x5, but I would like to see you shoot with your Sinar as well…I have a Sinar X.
127 K/L is my personal favourite lens...if only they weren't so prone to haze!
It's really nice you went with Portra to show the full potential of that kit. These are lovely pictures.
I have the same first impressions about the 127mm. It feels a bit long, but it is also the lightest and shortest lens in that range, right? I am about to try the 90mm K/L which is bulkier.
I'm positive, I think a mix of news and walks in Helsinki is good for both you and your audience. Thoughts from your neighbor in Stockholm.
Very beautiful photos of nothing special...the mark of a good photographer ❤
Its the UA-cam life, take a roll in a video, share all, none are great. 🫠
Nice video. I have RB67 pro SD too. This is big worker.
Really nice video.
After living in Finland you must have been exposed to there national tressure charracer: Moomin?
Thank you for this! Nice and easy, just "having fun". Also, Im a gear hog also, and after watching this I've decided to hang on to my RB setup / get out and use it. This is not my only 6x7 rig, but I was waffling on whether or not to keep the RB gear. I'll keep.
Another argument in favor of the RB is the bInstax back with which you can shoot very good quality instax square pictures.
Shoot your own kit - enjoy your gear and make videos at the same time. I am absolutely positive your audience will be happy to see that. Quite frankly it's the piece of your channel that's been missing. Cheers.
Good reminder. Photography should be fun. Great encouragement for me to "shoot some film" and not to worry too much about what others think. FYI - I am using 16x9 crop so much more, since my friends view the images on their computers/smart phones.
@ 7:25 I related to that. I rarely ever had a need for a studio priority camera. I’m more into architectural and environmental , events. I came from action, sports press / events. I got a good deal on a Mamiya RB67 Pro S w/ 70mm back , sport Finder & had a 100-200/6.2 but I popped a 90/3.8 and getting to know it. It’s certainly heavier & bulkier that I was wanting for walk around but I wanna make use it it.
I do like 6x6, 645 for casual events welk around. What do you find is a good but reasonable cost compact fun camera for that?
I must be crazy because I really enjoy going on photowalks with the RB handheld 😂 I have that 127mm too, it came with the 65mm which is just far too wide for me for street work.
I think these are better than "okay." In fact, you seem to have wandered into Verbeek territory, as to subject, composition and colour. I'd like to see more photo-taking, inside or outside, particularly with the 8 x 10.
Thanks for your video, Nico! After I picked up film photography last year, I had my dad - who is a professional photographer who hasn't shot on film since the very beginning of the digital age - look for his old RZ67 which he eventually found in the attic a couple of months ago. Because of this, I feel bad because every now and then I get the urge to exchange the RZ for an RB... it just looks like it is more of a hands-on experience, I guess. Would be interesting to hear what made you switch (unless there's a video where you explain it which I missed)! Anyway, what you said about gear and wanting more and different gear without really using it definitely made me reflect on that. I'll keep using the RZ for now - it's amazing how it seems to be in almost perfect condition after just sitting around for what must be close to 20 years (only annoying thing is the rubber on the underside having become sticky, so I had to tape it over)!
Try using some iso alcohol, or lighter fluid carefully on a sponge and scrub off the sticky coatings.
You know you can pop the dark slide down the left side, by the hot shoe, so you can leave it in there whilst shooting rather than balancing it on the side and popping it back in between shots.
Good video. I like these out shooting videos. Also, I've asked this before but didn't get an answer: Is there any news about kamerastore own lab? It was supposed to be ready like a year ago I think?
Thanks Janne, the lab is probably not going to be set up again for clients, we have partnered with Carmencita and use their service. If you mean the lab for our own use, im finishing it up as we speak, its been too busy to finish it, but cant wait.
@@NicosPhotographyShow Oh ok. Strange that they didn't announce that change. They only gave an estimate how long the lab renovation is going to take.
Do you live in Finland? I thought you were from Spain?
Hi! What kind of filter did you use for "speaking head" rolls?
I used a scratched Canon 28mm f/1.8 at 1.8 and a Moment Cine Bloom? 5%. A bit too dreamy for me, but a bit fun.
You need to add the bInstax to the kit :)
Stop bitch’in about carrying a Mamiya 67 rb around. Just think, Josef Sudek had his right arm amputated due to combat during WW1 and after going to school to become a photographer using the G.I. bill, he carried a VIEW camera with a heavy wooden tripod to become one of the world’s greatest photographers.
I hope, that I didn’t offend you. I love you too and religiously follow your great programming. But, I’m almost seventy-eight ( in January) years old and my backpack Carries a Mamiya RB67 SD, a 90mm, 65mm lens, cable release, six rolls of film (3-b+w and 3-color) and three film magazines. And my Manfrotto tripod; that I hold by hand. It’s a load, that’s why I sleep good at night.🥱
No offence taken, been online for decades, you get used to comments. I love heavy cameras and my favourite is my Sinar P2 8x10, but when you take a tripod for the video camera and another for a stills it gets annoying fast.
7:10 is sooooo my life. Oh well. It is GAS of corse and we know that for a fact. I really love my little camera collection but at the moment i´am thinking about getting a Olympus om4ti... Well why? nice spot meter so i dont have to take my pentax spmeter with me. BLA BLA BLA. As if the Om4 would take better Pic than my Canon F1. Or as one of my other nice Canon Bodys. NO! Ohu whats that? A Vivitar 28mm 2.0 Close Focus, sounds interesting. Super nice performance for the price! What a nice lens, well i guess i have to get one! (ignoring the fd 28mm f2 canon on the shelf) Shut up brain! just pick up one camera and shoot and dont by another one that you dont need anyway!!!!
if you have a nice om4 ti to sell please send me a message.
It’s kind of ridiculous that everyone says the RB 67 camera is specifically used for studio work. What was used before the 35mm and twin reflex came around? A view camera! Daaaaa! A lot heavier than a RB67.
It was used all over, but I consider it mostly a studio camera (for my use).
While this is a fun video...I miss the "The News".
What happened to "the news"?
@@NicosPhotographyShow Ok...fantastic!! Again this is a fun format too...going out with you to shoot, but the News is the Nico "bomb"...and well, I know I'm not the only one missing it here lately!! :)
Have a GREAT day!!
I will look on UA-cam! I will not subscribe! Get sponsors and ads..
I have a RB67 and it is fun to use. I take mine out but maybe not as much as I’d like. I also have a Fuji GX680 and that is really a beast but that hasn’t stopped me from taking it out. I’m 71 so my outings aren’t that strenuous anymore and I use a canvas wagon to move my gear around rather than a backpack. I took both out once and you should have seen the looks I got and the questions that people asked. After some recent heart issues my collecting has slowed down and now I’m more interested in going out and using what I have rather than adding to my collection. This is a hobby that I have enjoyed since I was 8 yrs old helping my mom print B/W pictures in our bathroom at home. I was the head tray agitator. It was just magical watching an image appear in the tray while I agitated.
