Solenoids will get hot like that if you spend an extended period of time cranking. Any electrical system will get hot if it has a short. Getting that hot to blow a fuse or damage something in the start circuit. Couldn't tell if you were posting for help or what.
Just an informative thing and curious about the solenoid internals after this failure. You are right on both counts...I had a long crank event and found the connections had worked loose. Both heat causing. P.
