I'm so impressed that you put all of this together! Brava, great work!! 😍
Aw, thank you April! Thank you for being a part of this!
@@GinaLuciani it was fun, and I love these end results!
I am a German flutist, Flötistin. My husband is Italian...so there I am flautista. Changes wherever I go or in which language I speak🎶🪈🎵.
I love your channel!!!❤
I love this video! So great to hear so many opinions. I was raised a flautist but a total converted flutist. Makes way more sense and just SO much clearer and less confusing!
Thing is, it's "flautist" in British English but no-one in GB would pronounce it "flout-ist" - it's *always* "flaw-tist". You didn't have many Brits in your sample. It's no surprise Americans go for "flutist" as that's what's taught to them, just as Brits are taught "flautist" (flaw-tist!!) is "correct". Personally I prefer "fluter"! It's got nothing to do with salary! 😉
If you look them up, "flutist" does have the longest etymological pedigree in English, followed by "fluter", but "flautist" started to be used during the C19th, probably because of musical use of Italian for much terminology, and by the early C20th it had become the received norm in British English (with pronunciation shifted to the most usual British pronunciation of the "au" dipthong - "awe", as in autism, author, haul, Chaucer, haunt, gaunt, flaunt, etc. etc. - even Americans wouldn't pronounce those with an "ow" sound!) but that shift didn't happen in America.
Flautist... no clue why ... just do....
You have to go with your gut!
I'm a flutist because I'm an American that speaks English. =)
I think the confusion comes from how many different languages all say "flute" very similarly.
English: Flute, French: Flûte, Spanish: Flauta, German: Flöte, Russian: Fleyta, Italian: Flauto, etc.
Most of our terminology come from the Italian language in classical music (mezzo piano, forte, ritardando, poco a poco etc.) Therefore we confuse saying flauto for flautist vs flutist.
There's almost no way one can confuse bassoon for fagotto (Italian) or Oboe for Hautbois (French) so they don't struggle as much as we do when it comes to identifying ourselves. I highly doubt someone from France will say they're an oboist suddenly changing to the English language, but I can be wrong! However, I can totally see how an Spanish speaker could hear a German speaker say what they are very similarly.
This is just my thought though! I'd love to hear what anyone else thinks!
What a good observation! I bet you’re right!
This is amazing!!
Flautist. From London UK.
Great! Thanks for letting me know :)
I’m both. I say flutist most often but I love the sound and spelling of flautist. It sounds more enchanting. 🌷
As Barry Griffiths says, I am a flautist!
Australian is usually closest to the English pronunciation. So I think that's why I say flautist. That's Fl-aww-tist, not Fl-oww-tist.
Great compilation. Aussie player here and I personally prefer flautist - but pronounced the way Barry Griffiths said, like 'floor-tist'! The US pronunciation sounds a bit too much like the word flout for my tastes :)
haha Pedro just avoids the argument altogether
I'm a flutist! I'm also American, and I noticed the only ones who said "flautist" were European or spoke a language in which that sounded closer to their word. I'm just glad nobody said "fluter"!
Could you see the resignation in my eyes?
I loved your response! I included your other take with your amazing explanation in the video coming next week! Thanks again for being a big part of this video!
I’m a FLUBA! I play flute AND tuba (not at the same time, though)!
Fight On!
Omg! You win best answer! That’s such a cool combo
❤️💛❤️✌️❤️💛❤️
Thanks Gina!
I stumbled across your channel and have to say that it’s literally my favorite flute channel!!
It’s great to see a fellow Trojan alum musician making a difference!
I got my BM at SC in 96 (graduated with Elizabeth Roe, nonetheless) and my MM Ed in 2003
Thank you for sharing your experiences and expertise to the world…it is appreciated!
✌🏾❤️💛
I use flutist, in Hungarian we say it as "fuvolista" (you pronounce the "S" as "sh" like in ship )😊
So interesting! Thanks for sharing! I hadn't heard that one before now
Ive always said flautist bc my first tutor was hispanic!
Patricia George once scolded me that she is “a flutist. Flautists are recorder players.” 😂😂😂😂😂
I get asked this all the time and I am team flute player or flutist! 🎶🎼
Flutist because I speak english.
Flute in English/Flauta in Spanish
I personally agree with that :)
I think it was in Nancy Toff’s “The Flute Book” that she said flutist because the verb “flout” means to mock and I am not a flautist for that reason. I’m a flutist. Now if your language pronounces flute as “flauta” or similar, then “flautist” does make more sense. But for me, I’m a flutist.
I had never heard that, thank you for sharing (regarding Nancy's book!). Totally agreed that Flautist or Flautista from Flauta makes sense
The primary current meaning of "flout" is "to openly disregard a rule/law/convention", but the sense "to mock" is an archaic usage (which I hadn't come across before looking it up just now).
Funnily enough, I notice that in recent times many people get "flout" and "flaunt" muddled up, though their meanings are significantly different.
I'm a sax player, who sometimes plays flute.
Uk flautist here.
Fun stuff!! “Fretless”😅 “depends on the salary”😂
So my answer is similar to that of Ana Paola and Marina Piccinini. I am a flutist and flautist pero I’m also a flautista!!❤️❤️❤️
I don't say either yet. I'm an older guitar player looking for a recommendation. I want to pick up an entry level flute specifically to learn Marshall Tucker Band songs. Anyone have any thoughts it would be appreciated ☺️
AP style: Flutist. (But "flautist" sounds soooo much cooler.)
Great video!! I play the flute, not the flaut. I’m a flutist.
One wonders what the opinion of non-native speakers adds to this discussion. Flutist or flautist... let's leave that a fight between Brits and Americans (Even in this clip, I often hear the latter distinctly say: fludist. Do these people play a flude? So, what the hack... We all know what they mean.
Flautist
:)
Hi, I'm a flutist / Flötist from Vienna :)
awesome! Thanks for letting me know!
Yeah Barry Griffiths!
He's the best!
I usually say flutist or flute player
Nice!
It depends on the language a guess ... in spanish I am Flautista, in english I am flutist
I say flutist or flute player
me too :)
I'm a flutist who'd rather play piccolo!! :)
i’m a flutist!
yay!
I'm a taverso player :)
I’m a violinist.
Flutist ❤
Flautist in the UK. Always hear Flautist not flutist.
Ocarinista jajaja well,if you play only ocarinas i guess? There is any term?
oh my goodness - your guess is as good as mine! I'll have to look into this!
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thanks for watching!
Yes, flutist because I speak English. Flautist is Italian.
I am the flutest
😃
Flautist then, but now flutist
I am Venezuelan, in Spanish it’s “flautista” so in English I feel like it’s fancier to say flautist
My dad is from Venezuela! Thanks for sharing this!
@@GinaLucianithat’s so cool!!!
