Global National: April 30, 2024 | Baby, grandparents killed in Ontario wrong-way police chase

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- Four people have died, including a baby and their grandparents, after a major crash caused by a high-speed police chase through oncoming traffic on HIghway 401 east of Toronto. As Mike Drolet reports, the tragedy is raising questions about how police pursuits should be balanced against public safety.
History was made in the House of Commons after Speaker Greg Fergus expelled Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre for refusing to withdraw a statement calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a "wacko." David Akin looks at how the Tories are doubling down instead of backing down, how that remark compares to other tense moments in previous Parliaments and whether Fergus can restore order to the House.
McGill University is asking Montreal police for help to remove pro-Palestinian protesters from an encampment on its campus. Mike Armstrong explains how police are reacting to the request and how lawyers have gone to the Quebec Superior Court hoping to ban protests within 100 metres of the school.
A growing number of American post-secondary institutions are struggling to maintain order of their campuses, where pro-Palestinian protesters are refusing to budge. Jackson Proskow explains how the situation is worsening at Columbia University, the epicentre of the movement and how these demonstrations are testing the limits of free speech.
Both Israel and Hamas are mulling over a ceasefire proposal, which includes the release of some of the most vulnerable Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, as well as a 40-day pause in the fighting in Gaza. As Redmond Shannon explains, regardless of a deal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is still determined to invade Rafah.
A 36-year-old man has been arrested and hospitalized after allegedly going on a stabbing rampage with a sword in northeastern London, killing a boy, 14, and injuring four other people. Crystal Goomansingh reports on what is known about the victims and the suspect.
Plus, the British Columbia government has purchased Lightning Rock, one of the most important First Nations burial sites in Western Canada, with the intent of eventually giving ownership rights to Sumas First Nation. Neetu Garcha reports on how the move is being hailed as a triumph for Indigenous rights around the world.

Nothing would justify if I lost my baby and my parent this way.
What happened to safety first????
Cop FD up.
Stealing bottles of liquor doesn’t justify a police pursuit
To many HotHead Super Hero
Officers
That cop forgot about " safety first "
Indeed that was really stupid. Imagine telling the rest of the family that they died for a liquor bottle ? Quite irresponsible from the cop's part, isn't it ? Should get fired asap for being stupid and endangering other drivers leading to death.

The other tragedy is the guy probably had a long history of being arrested. Keep them in jail for life already

Are these cops out of their minds? Did they not have a helicopter to follow them?

Very poor judgement on the police and probably should lose there jobs. But also very poor judgement on our law courts as well if a person is dangerous keep them locked up in jail and robberys won't happen with repeat offender's

Here's a hypothetical: in another world where the police called off their chase calling it "too dangerous too pursue" and the robber continued to recklessly attempt their escape travelling the wrong way down the 401 and proceeded to again crash into another vehicle taking multiple lives and their own. Would there not be another opposing party criticizing the police who called off the chase of being overly cautious and allowing a crazed driver to put the lives of countless innocent people at risk?
The police officers and chief are very much to blame for the tragic outcome of this irresponsible and negligent pursuit going the wrong way on a major highway. Condolences to the family.
Trudeau's revolving door bail policy is responsible for keeping dangerous criminals on the streets.
Durham police NO WONDER!!! That's something stupid they would do!!!

@@user-nm7yt3ir5iwhat? Who's taking houses? Are these houses on wheels?
The police are literally telling ppl to leave their keys out/accessible so criminals can take their cars..... So if your house is on wheels, the police will probably tell you to just let the criminals take that too.
Can you post a link to one of the stories of people having their house taken by armed criminals?? (An example in Canada)

Rest in peace 🪦 for those who lost their lives
Guy was on the 401 wrong way. Police had to be there.

The police should have called off the chase when the suspect went against the traffic!! They have how many helicopters and could have easily followed the suspects that way! But instead they thought it was a good idea to chase a van doing 150 -160 kph going against traffic on one of the busiest highways in the world over some stolen liquor ,wow!!

"Officers sometimes get tunnel vision"? We don't f..king pay them $100k a year to get tunnel vision! we pay them to serve and protect law abiding citizens and their family. Does a $10-12k loss warrant the loss of at least 3 innocent lives? How do you justify police vehicles going at maximum speed, the wrong way, on Canada's busiest stretch of highway?
Exactly....
Serve and protect
Safety first
Police need more helicopters so they can pursue the vehicle without having a car chase
If we kept criminals in jail, this wouldn't have happened.
Police are not to blame for criminals' actions
Ban police chases? Yea, that'll end well 🤦♂️
Imagine losing your parents AND your kids in an car crash of this nature because some hero from the Durham regional police valued a few bottles of booze more than the lives they "swore to protect".
DRP is too busy trying to see past their giant egos, couldn't possibly reconsider a chase.
Why did so many people call police that there was a car going the wrong way on the 401? Shouldn't we all just accept it and not want them to do anything about it?
The driver of the van trying to escape the police at all costs is responsible for this horrific accident.
@@audittheauditorsso because people call the cops about a wrong way driver, that justifies cops chasing them full speed against traffic, breaking their own rules of public safety first? Is that really your logic?
Show us the police officers who went on the chase. Its there flaut
The only time the house will be civil is when people can speak for themselves and not be judged
those vans have tackers in them the cops should of held off they escalated the chase
It's truly heartbreaking to hear about the devastating outcome of this police pursuit. The loss of innocent lives, including that of an infant and their grandparents, is an unimaginable tragedy that could have been avoided. Pursuing a suspect into a high-speed chase on a busy highway, especially when it's beyond the jurisdiction of the local police, seems reckless and unnecessary.
In situations like this, where public safety is paramount, it's essential for law enforcement to consider alternative methods of apprehension. Calling for support from the OPP or utilizing police helicopters could have been safer options to prevent such a catastrophic event. Sadly, the decision to engage in a pursuit led to irreversible consequences.
This incident underscores the importance of reevaluating pursuit policies and emphasizing the safety of innocent bystanders above all else. My heart goes out to the families affected by this tragedy, and I hope that lessons will be learned to prevent similar incidents in the future. . . . . . . . . .
durham has a helicopter , i hope the lawsuit get the family 100 million , it 100% should have been called off
On my street in Ajax some kids had a wild house party and a 20 on 20 street fight broke out. Neighbours called the police and the copter was there in 5 mins.
Indeed. They had time to get the helicopter in pursuit. Bowmanville to Stevenson is 30 mins.
But, the Durham police have a history of being cowboys and not following protocol.
I come on to the comment section to read all the law enforcement experts comments.
I just read another one apparently
The helicopter doesn't fly or is available 24/7. A helicopter can't physically stop a car going the wrong way. Do you all think that the driver would have safely maneuvered around those on coming cars and avoid each one of them? Even at 5km/hr, a car hitting it at 120km/hr wound be fatal.... If the police didn't do anything, we wound all say "where were the cops?!"
That’s so sad and heartbreaking 💔 in Canada 🇨🇦
The Speaker did not chastise Trudeau for his unParliamentary language just prior to Poilievre's statement about the PM. Why is that?
Hypocrisy is ramped with the Liberals
to those who think the police were just doing their job -Police set an example for how to respond within the law - may this tragedy be learned from and not repeated -the police escalated the situation and there were 3 deaths due to the criminals actions and the police decision to pursue endangering innocent people ,think about it-how many vehicles and occupants put at risk during this chase , even liquor store employees are instructed not to engage with theft for their own safety, there are safer ways to catch criminals- time for changes in the courts and change in police pursuit tactics
Police persuit for an lcbo robbery ?
Canada is such a joke. They gonna let that man go in about 5 year.
He’s dead
the parliament is really a joke ❤
Another win for Pierra Poilievre
If the guy is going the wrong way on the highway eventually he will be stopped, why pursue him knowing full well that the conquences could be fatal. You would think this police training 101
the cops that followed on the wrong side need to go to jail they made the situation worse
The cops should be charged for public endangerment , all this for a robbery.....total idiots
Safety first.
"wacko" is not parliamentary? what a joke haha
This is not the officers fault, only the perpetrators fault
Why are you not pressuring police to release the images of the suspects? We know liquor stores have video recordings.
What a wacky misadventure
Why wouldn’t there already be something implemented for a police chase as such ? Similar to a police shootout, obviously it’s not safe to openly fire your guns in a public space unless you absolutely have to, but for a robbery as such this police chase shouldn’t have happened, if I’m the family of the killed victims I’m 100% suing the Toronto Police and if justice isn’t served through the court then justice should certainly be taken into their own hands.
Sue the Durham Police

this was said right before Justin said anything about spineless leadership.
Also note that Justin did NOT actually say Pierre was a spineless leader either. Although he is.
When you're talking about house rules, whether you like it or not, there's a difference between saying a person is something and a person is demonstrating something. Justin never said Pierre was anything. He "played" within the rules while Pierre broke them.
Add to that that the entire conservative party was yelling and disruptive every time someone talked..... The whole party and their leader needs to learn to respect the house and show that respect to the house. They can show respect to the house and still not have respect for their opponents.
