Fantastic example of beautiful ragtime from the West Indies. Hope to come across a piano roll of this to add to my collection. The bass is out of this world!!
I understand what you’re saying, but it’s still not ragtime, traditional calypso naturally sounds a lot like jazz/ragtime when played on the piano, but many of the artists at that point of time would not have heard of jazz or ragtime unless they were living in the states. Jazz and calypso have similar origins which is why later on you tend to hear a lot of crossover between the two due to their similarities.
I agree this isn’t actually meant to be creepy AFAIK. The minor-key mode could mean various things to various musicians back in the day, but “creepy” was not a common one, to my knowledge. I hear this more as “serious”. It’s definitely a phenomenal performance and a terrific and exceedingly rare piano roll. All of the QRS “West Indies Series” and “West Indian Mentor Series” are some of the rarest and most valuable 88-note home piano rolls.
Ok, if no one else is gonna say it, I was looking for something more along the lines of "Sweet Charlotte"(after a true story) or even Tom Waits "What's He Building?"
I dont get how some people don't find this scary, all I can think about when I listen to this song is some murder prancing around my house gleefully (with this song playing in the backround like a creepy movie scene) chasing me around enjoying watching me try to run to no avail.
How do you guys not think it’s creepy? Maybe it’s unconventionally scary but: Imagine you are in an old Victorian house and you hear this playing at night and it echoes through the house. As you walk up the coiling stairwell illuminated by a candle, you enter the room where it’s playing, noticing the piano keys moving by itself. the curtains from the window billow suddenly, distracting you from the dusty, white-sheet covered room. The chill in the room makes your teeth shatter, the moonlight blinking on a gritty projection looking figure of a man sitting on the seat in front of the piano. You can’t believe your eyes; fear and entrancement filling you. The end of the song peaks and a picture frame shatters in front of you, at once your candle blows out. It’s an old, browned with time picture of the man in the video
Dude if Lionel Belasco or any other of the departed piano legends of yesteryear visited and started playing, I wouldn’t run away; I’d try to record and get their autograph. That would be phenomenal. That reminds me of the time when Dennis Pash told me he visited ragtime composer Harry Kelly’s house in Kansas City, and stayed over and heard ghostly music drifting up from downstairs. None of the ragtimers who heard this story were creeped out, we were all jealous AF (and happy for him) that he got to hear it and we didn’t . 😀
If I heard this in an old Victorian house at night I wouldn't feel in a horror movie, I would feel like I'm in Hotel Transylvannia. The song playing out of nowhere would be weird, but the song just haves a comical and cartoonish tone to it that doesn't makes it scary.
I don't see it as scary I picture men and women strutting down the ave with their heads Heald high with pride promenading around in their gilded clothing.

Not ragtime, it’s calypso
@@lerei2525 it all ties together! There's definitely characteristics of ragtime within here.

Wow, did this comment completely change my mind. This is legitimately the scariest UA-cam comment I have ever read.
I wouldn't be scared of the music, but I'd be scared because of the house..
