    This series is still.relevant today, I just purchased a 2k R1 and I'm very familiar with the rebuild sequence but it never hurts to have yours as a reference. Great stuff here.

    2 nights to do the shims lol , what a time doin them things huh. in the factory they use a fixture with dial guages that sits right down in the cam bores and a huge selection of shims of course. ...its amazing how quick the assembler can do them.

  • @bubster1981
    @bubster1981 12 років тому +1

    Years ago chevrolet used a very nice system...it was a typical cam n bucket set up , but instead of using shims they had a screw n wedge system in the bucket that was ajusted using a small allen screw....brilliant!..each full turn of the screw would take up something like .001'' either plus or minus.

      How about this , I had a 1979 Kawasaki KZ750B . Instead of a shim in a bucket It had a one piece shim about 5mm thick by 25mm diameter . When I disassembled it due to bottom end bearing failure the valves stems , shims and cam were in pristine condition . There was absolutely no detectable wear on any of the friction surfaces . In fact you couldn't tell one side of the shims from the other !

    I had wondered many times whether a new head gasket was reusable or not after having torqued the head bolts down, so thank you for the reply.
    I already knew how to check the valve clearances; when I wrote "to check the valve" I meant "to inspect that buggered valve". I'm Italian and my English is no very good; probably this is the reason for the misunderstanding, sorry.

    Thanks for the vids! Guess most of the RN04 engine related stuff is quite similar to the 98-99 RN01?! I got a 99 with 80k km on the clock and need to swap the clutch and check the valves. your vids being a big motivation :)

    You can adjust your valve shims without having the head on the engine. Just install the shims ,buckets, and cams with the head on your work bench. You’ll need to disassemble it again anyway.

  • @chrisburnsed6349
    @chrisburnsed6349 5 років тому +1

    Your valve retainers were not seated in the keeper fully. That’s why the valve was off

  • @cashamerica4543
    @cashamerica4543 7 років тому +1

    That happened to me too on my PWC exactly the same thing on VX sport 1.1l just as you said something was not right to me and did pull it out and put back in and by magical my shime went back into ... I think that it might be the retainers on that valve that I put somehow wrongly...

  • @repomannv
    @repomannv  11 років тому +1

    Normally, you don't remove the head to check the valve clearances... you only have to remove the valve covers to gain access to the cams. In my case, one of the valves was buggered. The head gasket is a 3 layer metal gasket, so there is no problem reusing the same one after I had torqued the head down once. If you run the motor at all and have to pull the head, you should replace the head gasket just to be safe.

  • @MVPever
    @MVPever 11 років тому +1

    You said, at 1:40, that you had already torqued down all the bolts, so I guess that when you took the head back off to check the valve, the head and the cylinder gaskets were ruined. Were they ruined? Did you use new gaskets when you reinstalled the head?

    I'm trying to replace the o ring on the coolant pipe at the top of the engine... I'm having difficulties... it's very tight and awkward. is there a trick to it? can I use a lubricant or something to make it easier... the engine is still in place so it's hard to get in at it... it's the right hand side pipe.. cheers

    Why did you skip the caps placement and cap bolt torquing? Specifically, showing the dots lining up with the arrows, or the letter and 1-2 positioning? I had to figure it out elsewhere, I still watched most of your videos, confused why you would skip steps with over 22 videos.

    I cant get the cams to sit down right with the timing chain on. I didnt take the gear off the get the chain back on. When i put the cam caps back on the chain get right tight. Its a tdc to.

    • @repomannv
      @repomannv  2 роки тому

      Well, not sure what to tell you, make sure the cam chain tensioner is loose and the cam chain guide (the black plastic insert) is removed before pushing the cams down into place - you don't want any tension on the chain. When you push the cams back down it will be a little snug, but not super tight. If its super tight, something else is wrong.

      where the cases come together at the back of the engine

    • @repomannv
      @repomannv  8 років тому

      +Thomas Neely well, you don't need a new engine just because of an oil leak, if the motor is sound otherwise, pull the head off, inspect the leak location, and maybe you just need a new head gasket.

      the motor split doesn't have a gasket isn't it yamabonded together?

    • @repomannv
      @repomannv  8 років тому +1

      +Thomas Neely sorry, thought your leak was up top at the mating of the had and the motor... if its leaking at the crankcase mating, then yes, thats just some yamabond. go to r1-forum.com and post up there with pics and the crew there will guide you.
