To be fair, he doesn't seem to be too literate in chemistry himself. It's clearly not an acidic molecule and his confusion about the pKa value is mainly due to a lack of basic chemical knowledge. Which is ok - he never says he's a chemist, but he should maybe think about adding a disclaimer ^^
Some ideas (from an organic/peptide synthesis PhD student): 1. Why not just repeat your extraction process multiple times on the same sample of red bull to see if you can continue to remove caffeine? In theory it should continue to remove a certain extent of the caffeine. 2. You could try a different organic solvent for the extraction instead of DCM. Ethyl acetate is a common choice, although it might be difficult to fully remove afterwards. You would need to rotavap it and maybe azeotrope with CHCl3, which is not ideal because chloroform is highly toxic. Diethyl ether may be another viable option for the extraction since it is relatively non-toxic and highly volatile, so it should be easily removed afterwards. 3. You could try to isolate the caffeine using flash chromatography (probably with a silica stationary phase). I don’t know if this would work though, because you would need to find (from lit. or experimentally) a TLC system that will give the caffeine an Rf ~0.3 with reasonable separation from the other compounds present (if they are not UV active, visualise them with a dye - see NotVoodoo for more info). If this prerequisite is met, then run the column, collect the fractions containing caffeine and set them aside. Collect any other fractions that are separated for future recombination. You would need to flush the column afterwards to retrieve everything remaining on the column (this is sometimes done with 10% MeOH in DCM, but methanol is toxic so it may not be viable). Recombine everything not containing caffeine, remove solvent etc., dilute with water, carbonate. Maybe this is feasible, but it is complicated by needing to be fit for subsequent consumption and preserving the original components in their original ratios.
I love bits like 20:50: "I honestly kind of panicked here, and I thought that I had ruined everything - but then I realized I could just use the desiccator again." It makes me feel so much better when I hear a seasoned pro experience that sentiment we've all felt while doing extractions, hahaha.

When using solvents such as DCM for extractions, I was always taught to “mix-and-roll” the vessel, sort of in a figure-8 motion. This allows for adequate mixing / stirring without any bubbles. The layer separation happens much quicker, and the potential for emulsion is lower. Thanks for the content 🥼

300atm CO2 is your solvent of choice for caffeine extraction. that's what they use on beans.
Some ideas (from an organic/peptide synthesis PhD student):

When using solvents such as DCM for extractions, I was always taught to “mix-and-roll” the vessel, sort of in a figure-8 motion. This allows for adequate mixing / stirring without any bubbles. The layer separation happens much quicker, and the potential for emulsion is lower.
