Bad Gear - Korg Kaossilator Pro - The Synth of Christmas Past???

- Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. On popular demand, we are going to talk about the Korg Kaossilator Pro, probably THE most requested piece of gear in the comment sections. Is it the Synth of Christmas Past and why did you put me through this right before the festive season? ;)
I have almost all of the items in the bad gear series. FML 🤦♂️🤣
That is truly sad. Unless you have the streetboxx.. Then that's awesome
Great minds... ;)
Same
I have all of these as well. I feel like hes listening to my recommendation.
Bad Gear made me hunt for Yamaha FB-01 ))
What if the real bad gear was all the friends we made along the way?
These are certainly Good Gear (da best!!!)
Woah...
true story.. it actually was.
🤣🤣 Fuck friends.
I too have terrible taste in life. How do you do?
You have no idea how satisfying it is to hear every Friday: “At first glance, this thing is ticking all the boxes” 🙂 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Florian!
Thanks! Merry Christmas!
why you look like rip off AudioPilz
Press like then watch.
That's the way! Thanks!
seriously every synth i own....a man of my own heart
The way of Bad Gear! Stick around!
I was like: "I wonder if today he's gonna upload something", and boom, there it is. Merry Christmas from Argentina, dude. This was the best new channel of the year, congrats
Thanks! Bad Gear Christmas!
You should have watched his interview on the Gaz Williams show, you’d have got a heads up, I thought his bad gear demo was going to be slay bells, maybe next year!
Rating, 0/10 doesn't even skrillex.
On a serious note I'd love to see a bad gear tier list new year special!
Great idea! I'll try to squeeze it in!
Bad Gear Suggestion: Teenage Engineerings Pocket Operators…
He already did those
Thanks but there is already a "worst of" episode. More to come in 2021!
@@AudioPilz Sorry, found it now. (I *did* make sure to check the "Bad Gear" Playlist ua-cam.com/play/PLRkn2QTxcJf6HCrt4YnhhjxNpRLqWOLeI.html before and it seems to be missing in there)
Kaos pad and electribe are horrible.
@@AudioPilz I missed that! Yay, more bad gear!
My favorite piece of bad gear yet. I've had both the pro and the pro+ and they have probably been the most used synths in my collection. They have definite limitations, but equally they allow a level of expressive control that none of my other synths quite allow. Not the tool for every job, but a very versatile one none the less.
Happy to hear that. It could have been much more versatile, tho
it's the channel's first Christmas, hopefully many more will come ! bad gear is one of my favorite video series
Thanks! Hope so, too!
He will run out of bad gear tho
@@fa0179 there will never be such thing as, running out of bad gear lmao
@@fa0179 never!!!
I love how this channel reviews ALL the crappy gear that I desperately wanted when I just started out with synths and music. Even had (and sold) a lot of them. Awesome stuff!
Yeah, we seem to be a special group of people ;)
My name is _______ and I'm also a "bad gear" addict.
I had the KP3 and have a mini KP. I love the way drums work on them and wish someone would do a full blown drum machine based of the concept.
True! So much potential!
Why would you record it in stereo EVERYONE knows you record synth in mono
Had 2 of them for the last ten years still haven’t run out of ideas love them
Cool, did you experience any troubles with sync?
@@AudioPilz obviously this instrument has limitations when it comes to syncing and midi is a joke, but l use it mostly as a lead instrument and effects tool, looping is ok but not perfect, but as I’m a crap keyboard player it’s a god send and have perfected various techniques with this thing it still has me smiling so that can’t be bad.
Same here! I love it as a complement for other sounds. Been usi g it for producing lately
Your videos are really good
Thank you!!!
When you realise this is the last Friday of 2020
It certainly is
Man, I hope the calendar doesn't just roll over to December 32nd after next Thursday.
8 more months of 2020
Either way, New Year or 2020 II corona boogaloo, better make the best of this last Friday innit
@@miamha 2020 II, Judgement Day
Just wanted to say I absolutely adore this series and also to say THANK YOU for continuing to make it during this absolute hell year.
Thank you so much!
using this as a looper is how I do it!
That's probably the best use for it!
"Edward Forty-hands bender" rofl dying
We all know how it feels ;)
@@AudioPilz Yes, we do. Thanks, 2020.
Man the mid 90’s till the 2010 was a bad time for hardware gear!!!!! There was a few gems surrounded by a bunch of I wish I didn’t buy that!!!!
Still it's a lot of fun to mess around with them
you are single handedly causing all companies to rethink their products and in turn, giving us not so bad gear. Merry Xmas
Thanks! Merry Christmas!
I sure hope so.
It amazes me how week after week you manage to tap back in to the zeitgeist of the time when the gear first came out! I suppose part of this is due to how dated/limiting the gear you review can be, but I also think you have a rare ability here :) And was there a Blackberry shoutout there in the final track description haha?
Thanks! It's more about fax machines ;)
I love my OG Kaossilator, and there were just a couple tweaks it really needed to be truly great (particularly MIDI in for notes or at least clock) so it's sad that they really appear to have let the magic out in the transition to Pro.
Some goddamned calibrated markings on the touch pad would have been a lot more helpful than meaningless blinkenlights too.
Those lights are actually counterproductive!
It's my main tool in my whole arsenal! I love this thing!!
I'll have to dive deeper into midi translation for it!
@@AudioPilz right now the easiest way is to just buy a RK-002 Smart MIDI Cable that will do all the translation work for you www.retrokits.com/shop/rk002/
The app is actually both fun and functional.
I have to check it out
I've had a morbid fascination with this thingy but this video makes me glad I never got one:D
A morbid fascination is absolutely necessary for that thing ;)
I had one of these. Bought it for creating sfx for electric music & sound design. Found out the MIDI CC was bugged out & hooked up with a dev who hacked the OS. Ended up selling it in 2018 for $150. Sounds were great but like you said "very impractical". The Korg Koass pad mini is an amazing fx module though!
I'd love to cover the KPs but I would have a hard time selling them as Bad Gear ;)
Hard to argue with this assessment. The janky MIDI kills what could have been a handy rompler via your DAW. I'm saving mine to give to my son when he's older and can learn how to make music using the unit exclusively.
Thanks! Buy him a Retrokit RK002 with it ;)
@@AudioPilz 50EUR is a pricey buy - might have to before Brexit import tax kicks in :(
CC instead of note on/off. Fail.
This video was a public service announcement warning me to stay away. Thanks.
I have a mini kaossilator, it is a great toy for my 3 years old son. 😊
You're a good parent!
Same here. My 4 years old girl loves the Mini Kaossilator ;-)
better than blipbox
It looks like a perfect target for a dedicated firmware hacker to get some serious scene cred for adding in a lot of these functions...
Retrokits is on it!
(More) ROMpler in 2021. Great idea for more bad gear stuff :)
Thanks for the input! More romplers to come!
I have a Kaossilator Pro, and it does take time and effort to discover and fully understand its strengths, and how to work within the parameters of the synth's capabilities to generate great music. Focusing too much on what it can't do or can't do very well is not a very productive approach to using the Kaossilator Pro; this will only result in frustration.
I agree! It certainly did in my case;)
The original Kaossilator was my first synth-like instrument and I'll never sell it because it's so damn clever and fast to make a beat on and then forget it forever. I then got the "pro" and sold it quickly, because it was kind of boring for some reason compared to the more limited original version. But for me it was really easy to make loops on the big one too, the four tracks were cool and once you selected a scale it was super easy to get stuff out of it and the larger touch pad made it even easier to hit the right notes.
I'm longing for an OG Kaossilator, as well!
Ha...you finally did it , my christmas wish come true: A Kaossilator review omg...awesome video...i bought an 90€ or so cable from Rkode. So you can use after a few settings (scale chromatic note range full) kaossilator as midi device. Works not perfectly if you want to play BACH, but for most electronic music its a worth cool addon. Cool is pitch or wheel control works also as addition to xy controls. so you can get unexpected cool noise out your kaossilator. Cheers and merry Christmas🎹🎄PS: Rkode cable works also for Korg Volca Sample to change all sounds it to only one channel...
Thanks! Works for Digitakt, too! Awesome company!
Bad??? this thing is awesome! Sure it may not be like some of the stuff you rich kids with your fancy high end stuff have,but...This does a TON!!!
It certainly does a lot but usually not in the way I want it to do ;)
@@AudioPilz Welll...That's just called being a snob! It is to this day one of my go to pieces of gear! Does it do EVERYTHING I want ? No! But does ANY gear? HELL NO!!!
@@nathanvanmiddlesworthmedia844 ...then maybe a Snob I am ;)
when combined with the Strymon night sky it makes it come alive. it makes the disco club sounds into ambient sounds.
Doesn't Strymon make everything come alive? ;)
Want Kaossilator sounds and FX but don't want to spend $200+ on a used one?
Download the Kaossilator App.
It's iOS only, isn't it?
@@AudioPilz No! I have the app on my android phone and got it free ($20) because I'm subscribed to KorgUSA email newsletter. They usually have it available for free for once a year - but limited to 2-3 days - like a weekend.
My first synth was a PAIA Gnome, a diy kit ribbon controled noise monster. Please do an episode on that.
Great input! Thanks!
Classic
Kaossilator bad gear??? I love my kaossilators...dial in a sound and go...the roland d2 was crap...
Roland D-2 is indeed...unique ;)
I really looked into the Kaoscillator Pro and I came to similar conclusions, very expensive and can't find anyone who can do something useful with it. Even synth Wizard Jordan Ruddess does'nt seem to know what he's doing with it, lol!
I think he found the ultimate application: making money;)
Ha ha, lol
Shit was gonna ebay mine but since bought got 80 pounds? Might keep n sync with mpc? Eh...ahhh
Sync is tricky with this one
I had this as my first “sampler”! So weird seeing this as bad gear.
It certainly has its flaws
This device is for a DJ. That explains the RCA cables, the sounds, the pads, etc. it’s for a remixer who isn’t necessarily a keyboard player
👍👍👍
I have one of these, it was my first synth. A guy at Guitar Center managed to sell it to me when I was like 13 and had no idea how to achieve what I wanted. The thing is fun to mess around with, but a nightmare to try to make any serious music with. I found I wasted more time messing around with it than I did actually making anything I felt passionate about. It sat unused for years, but recently I've found some cool ways to make use of it, so it FINALLY has a role in my workflow doing something I couldn't already do without it. Now there's a reason for it to take up space in my house beside sentimental value.
clean your rubber buttons with a lint roller!! works for all the Kaoss things as well as MPC pads ;)
Great idea! Thanks for posting!
You should do the Trigger Finger Pro. Was 50% weeks after release and never received a single update. Then they took what they were doing with vst support and put that tech into their Akai Advance keyboard line (also under the inMusic brand umbrella)
Great input, thanks!
I have the TF (1.0). Once the software for it was abandoned, it cannot do much except trigger MIDI notes - nothing in the way of USB, except you need it plugged in to get power, even if you're not using a USB message connection. Its successor the Trigger Finger Pro was better, but I never really went back to M-Audio unless its for adapters or a low cost controller
For anyone who has this and wants to maximize the playability of this thing, get a midi keyboard with MIDI OUT port and also modulation wheel....after that buy this RETRO KIT rk002 korg kaossilator cable....this will effectively allow you to send midi signals to kaossilator pro and play it like a standalone monophonic Synth. I did it and have been amused and entertaining myself ever since.
Already ordered one!
By far the best (almost) new site this year. These videos are delightful! Congrats on a deeply entertaining (and frequently hilarious) year! Happy New Year!
Thank you so much! Happy New Year!
Is it just me or does anybody else decide that gear is bad upon seeing AC to DC wall wart adapters?! I mean, Korg might have avoided this by just making it three times it’s size, adding that ac/dc adapter to it’s insides and a throwing in a decent sized squage of lead to make it heavier on the side opposite the transformer (for balance!)!! Then! With a nice, long, and hefty power cord and a proper IEC connector, it might have avoided turning up on BadGear.
It's harder to get stuff with built-in power supplies approved in different countries so I understand manufacturers (somehow;)
The editing and pacing are so good, florian. You deserve a mince pie for those alone ✊
I've owned it's cohort, the kaoss pad of that time, and that was a hoot to use (especially live..long loading times for the samples there too), but this i couldn't bring myself to part cash with.
Korg have remarkably used this interface as far down the line as my current smartphone (on the app, which is MUCH easier to use), but this is a curio at best. The original (and currently s/h) prices are as wild as a raver with a really bad stomach. I have no idea who owns these & i suspect they're gifts or potential tax write offs.
Korg went onto better things such as the volcas, the minilogue, the monologue and *anything* else. This mis-step is like the suit jacket you bought in a rush from the sales, on the way home from work, for a works related party the next day; you dont actually like it that much, no one cares you're wearing it & even though you won't wear it again, you dont have the heart to get rid of it right now.
You had me at mince pie! Thanks!
I did enjoy my Kaossilator and Kaossilator Pro.
Still haven't tried the small one!
All "DJ" gear features RCA jacks so that you can't accidentally plug into something Inexpensive ;-)
Sounds legit 😅
Pro Tip: Dont use those silly video fx (5:42), we want to see the gear, not go on a trip.
Thank you for the feedback
I want to go on a trip, but I’m just an amateur!
I forgot about the kaossilators! I remember watching so many daft punk covers on those bad boys in like 2009
...and none of them were tight ;)
Hahaha, are you kidding me? I just bought one yesterday. To be fair, it's in absolutely pristine condition and I paid 112 Euro for it, so I really can't complain.
Nice price! Those have become really expensive
“Like paining the hallway though the letter box”
We all know that feeling!
How did this compare with Tenori?
7:49 Hey, they haven't even put a piano roll into the Korg Nautilus, despite others doing so. Big let down. Sounds are awesome though.
I've yet to give the Tenori a go
Dear god, you nailed this episode, hilarious, insightful and the tunes were dope. “Edward forty hands bender” bahahaha.
Thanks!
this looks like a total nightmare. Kaoss Pad was pretty fun to get some crazy unpredictable stuff though. This looks painful though
Agreed, such a missed opportunity!
Merry Xmas
*See you next year*
Thanks! Looking forward to '21
I used to do a live performance art piece back when I was studying at seminary where I wore nothing but a disposable adult diaper and played a Korg Kaossilator Pro with my tongue.
😂😂😂
Merry Christmas from Victorian Britain 🎄
Same to you, Sir!
6:45 - Deadmau5 has entered the chat
...n'stuff ;)
I REMEMBER this one :P
So good
Euww yeah! The Kawai K1m. The worst doorstop my studio has ever seen. Can't wait to hear you do your magic and turn this plastic abomination into a much desired vintage synth.
For now all the best for 2021. Thank you for all the awesome eye and ear candy during this strange year.
Thanks for watching! K1m is on the list!
The lack of undo with a pad to play notes is a deadly combination.
True! It's traumatizing...
I love my Kaossilator Pro+. Is it super useful? Nah not really but provides sounds that I cant get from my other hardware at this time. I also got mine second hand for only like $100. There are lots of them that pop up on Ebay all the time. There are many features it would be nice if it had but I can do that with other gear anyway so I am happy enough with it. Also I have like zero keyboard skills so it is just fun to wiggle my fingers on the touch pad rather than hunting for the right key(s).
Still waiting for brain-to-midi ;)
The kaossilator and the kaossilator pro were my first pieces of gear back in 2005. I always had the feeling that it was promising but soooo hard to play : not enough slots for tracks, the sh***y pad to play, and so on... I stopped buying gear till 2018, when I bought the novation circuit (halleliuah!!!). Such a big leap forward in terms of fun and playability !!!
Get a RetroKits RK-02 - total gamechanger for the Kaossilator Pro!
Great, now I need this device, thank you for driving my GAS! The good thing is I have a lot of RCA cables, finally I know for that!
Damn, RCA cables always tend to disappear ;)
I will never forget watching Beardyman slay a set with four of these.
Legend!
1 of those and 3 KP3s but yeah 👍
Korg EMX-1... but only because I'd like to see what you can do with it. Not bad gear, but would be cool to see your thoughts on it. Cheers from Canada.
Great idea! Thank you!
I used it with the MicroSampler, synchronized by a BeatStep Pro. Whenever you change the tempo on the BeatStep Pro, the Kaossilator is doing something, but it's out of sync, because, the tempo signal is transmitted to full quarter notes only. Nevertheless: The results were big fun sometimes!
I noticed that behavior, as well!
it drifts...
korg told me its because its a audio looper not a midi looper.
Hello, please tell me how to correctly record a sample in WAV format on a memory card for KORG KAOSSILATOR PRO+
Woah, I would have to look that up...
korgy
...like the dogs? ;)
Is the Casio XW-P1 performance sysnthesiser hated enough to feature on your channel? Casio has a treasure trove of bad gear to dig into. like the XW-DJ1 and XW-PD1. HT6000? CZ-230S?
I agree! This channel is seriously under-casioed!
“BAD GEAR???” Sacrilege I say, Knave!!
This whole channel is a sacrilege ;)
AudioPilz- Dig. But you picked one of *my* favorites this time...
Isn't Kaoss Pad3 even worse than this?? I bought it brand new back in the days but never managed to do anything decent with it.... In my personal opinion - even if it is a really sturdy ubit - it was totally overpriced!
I have yet to try that one!
Imagine bringing this to band practice. “Hey what key are you in?” “The key of X/Y”
It actually has a super-sophisticated scale system ;)
I play w a band and use this..you can change note scales fairly easy. I'm no theory major. But my mates will let me know real quick if I were outta tune..
@@DjSuess Yeah I was gonna say something similar, I have played with one of these with some friends on guitar and drums and it was quite easy to change scales and match them. The kaosillator pairs nicely with a microkorg also.
Man, you are using it the wrong way, you didn’t even try to use rhe sampler function, that’s where this machine kind of shine. This thing dictates it’s own workflow. You can make experimental loopings with it sampling external gear, like synths, tv shows, vinils etc, and use it like on between of two more composed sections of music or like mere rhythm section
The looper/sampler section is indeed nice!
Wow that cowbell surely is plonk
Edit: Merry Christmas Mr. Pilz, enjoy the rest of the holidays! 🎉
Plonk for days! Thank you so much!
Seriously though, needs more cowbell..
I love mine, it is what it is... b090 was used for Daft Punks "Rollin and Scratchin"
Good to know! Thanks for posting!
Interesting! I have the KP3 & never thought of it as a synth, just an effects unit....I can see if you thought you were buying a synth and trying to use it that way you’d be pretty frustrated with the unit! Great video as always, thanks and have a great Xmas👍
Thanks! The KPs were never intended to be synths, AFAIK. The KO were (and it didn't really work out, methinks;)
@@AudioPilz oh, ok I didnt understand the difference, I assumed it was just a later version thanks for pointing that out....after your demo I’m sort intrigued- maybe I should waste some of money on a hard to use, not especially good sounding digital synth...😊hmmm
I really hope you demo the Casio Trackformer XW PD-1 so then I can decide which bad gear I spend my money first
It's on top of my list!
i would like to see you do a piece on the Emu command stations like the XL-7 or MP-7 based on the Mo phatt and extreme lead modules built into a groove box controll suface with a bunch of midi and meant to be the center of a dawless setup made before the term "dawless" was invented
Great idea! I wanted to cover EMU stuff for month!
Yesss! I have the PX-7, which seems to be the more obscure of these semi-obscure workstations. 😁 So yeah, I for one second this shout, it would warm these cockles of mine heart 😊
@@AudioPilz I have the MP-7 with an added extreme lead expansion ROM. I’m not sure if the shipping cost would be prohibitive but your I would be more than happy to use mine.
More than happy to let you use mine.
@@AudioPilz Take Pauly's
So how do you send a regular MIDI sequence to this thing? I can't figure it out. Do I need a special MIDI cable? Or are you saying I need to map the MIDI CC to each note???
Either that or use something like a retrokits cable
That jam at the end was immaculate 🤌
Thanks!
Please make a video about the moog modular system... and the arp 2600 too! We don't like craving those
Maybe throw in a Prophet 5 for good measure;)
Bummed I didn’t pick one of these up. HOWEVER, I briefly did have a Numark EM-460 DJ mixer that had an early Kaoss Pad built into it. It was excellent for those DJs with 3 hands!
Always wanted to have one of those mixers!
Great little mixer that. But it went in the bin with everything else from that era.
shit thats the red thing rite? i had em260 in the early 2000s. one of the faders broke so i had to ditch it. gimmicky thing lol
@@foundatlantis yup, that's the one. I had both. Faders went on Both. numark though always supplied cheap parts, unlike the fanboy manufacturers.
@@DJWESG1 aye i run a dxm06 since having that em260 and that has been solid, not a bad thing to say about it. strange stories with music gear, some of it is neglected and abused and sometimes mint/near perfect. makes you wonder what kind of people the previous owners were like. or if its just an inherent problem with certain models.
The Kp3 is genius, but this thing truly deserves the bad gear title. Its forward thinking, but an utter failure. Merry Christmas dude!
Merry Christmas! I'll take a closer look...
i did manage to do 3 finished tracks with the kaosilator. it was tricky but the results were ok enough to publish. it could of been a really decent machine. this video nailed that
Yeah, such a missed opportunity...
I cant bekieve these midi packs are still being sold on youtube ads at the start of music production videos. The influencers who push them should be ashamed. Terrible!
I thought about releasing one with actual weird stuff;)
This is one of those things that almost nails it, but misses the mark.
True!
Hey Florian. Love the bad gear series, what do you think of doing a review of the Oberheim OB-12?
Thanks! I think I would need a bulletproof vest;)
Can you please do the Yamaha cs1x?! Thnx 4 your great show! Gruß Got from the netherlands
Ik dank u zeer!!! CX1x is on top of my list but they have become weirdly expensive!

I shouldn't have looked this up
Great vid! All the best for 2021! (...maybe a kaoss pad as an fx unit would have been the better choice...)
Thanks! All the best to you, too!
I think ideally its paird up with is red sibling to export all those jamming tunes to for more looping magic.
👍
It seems you were actually too kind. Generally people think this is shit out there. Are there any Fervent fans of this box?
Yeah, many hardcore fans. I'm unironically happy for them, I wanted to like it
All gear is bad gear (or it has its bad points). Truely bad gear has no redeeming features. I have tried to suppress my memories of that gear!
Agreed! All gear is Bad Gear!
Lots of these same criticisms can also be applied to roland samplers. I have never got midi in /out working on my sp 555
Never tried one of those. Great input!
Better gear chapter with the RK-002 coming soon?. Feliz navidad!
