- Here is the Seiko 5 SNXS SRPK family, to be released in May for 400€. This is a watch with a hardlex crystal, pressed clasp with a Seiko 4R36 movement. Seiko has clearly gone mad, or really greedy.

@@chair5728 Exactly. Seiko is just another manufacturer of mass market watches, alongside Citizen, Casio and the rest. It now seems determined to price itself out of the affordable market - and the specs Seiko watches offer simply don't cut it in a higher market tier.
@@MrLocsei That's right. If the announced Erebus watch was Seiko branded we would be talking about 1000 Euros. I'm not willing to pay that much money just for the name. I'm buying a watch for build quality, good specs and most of all the aesthetics. But that's just me. Of course everyone is free to pay the double, triple, quadruple etc. price for a brand name.
Stunning watches, price will come down but even at full price it's great value , excellent watches, people forget that all these "competitors" are using movements made by Seiko.. hardlex is an excellent crystal, never had issues with it.
I got to try one of these on the other day and have to say it looks amazing on the wrist. I did notice the finishing and bracelet especially was higher quality so much better than the original

It's deadly for any company to live on their past glories, and that includes Seiko, just ask the British motor bike industry from the 1960's ( yes I can remember that far back ) who laughed at Japanese bikes, well guess who won and who lost

apparently seiko is moving away from entry level. just look at grand seiko, king seiko, credor, etc.
Actually, I really like the look of these. Wouldn't pay anything near RRP for one though. There will likely be big discounts on these later in the year so happy to wait and see what happens. My guess is 30%+ off available by late 2024.
The blue one looks soooo good….but not at that price, for those specs! Wait long enough and these may come down, though.
I think your restraint is commendable. In my opinion they might as well re-spell their brand name as Psycho.
However this makes the Erebus Ascent look like an even sweeter deal than it already was. If or when brands like Steeldive and San Martin contract some decent designers and start doing their own originals Seiko will be up the creek without a paddle. Having a legacy is nice but the road they've chosen does not bode well for their future.
I'm looking forward to your review of Jody's new watch. Finding it extremely hard to decide on a dial....but I know I want one even though I didn't fancy buying yet another watch. 🙄

Agree with @oceanzu6585, an SBTM JDM 100m. w.r., Solar, Radio Controlled, Saphire with Super Clear coating, Perpetual calendar, Needle position adjustment are about the same price delivered in EU with taxes is a much better value. Asking 1200 Euros for a Willard re-issue when Steeldive sells them for 65 Euros is ridiculous. Regards and congrats on your content.
I have both a steeldive and an spb Willard and there is no competition. The Seiko is miles better. The steeldive looks cheap and tacky in comparison. Especially the coloured variants. The black one which I have is ok. The Rdunae is better than the SD. I spent as much upgrading the SD as a new Rdunae. Anyway my SPB265 is miles better

It should be does that 1100 dollars account for how much better the watch is, the cost of building factories to make materials like steel, sapphire, quartz, lume etc, the cost of employees to run those factories, the cosy of designing and manufacturing the machines to tool parts, the cost of ISO testing, and the cost of ADs needing to also profit. These are among just a few considerations in the 1100 dollar RRP (which you aren't forced to pay) difference. If you want a vertically integrated watch brand that actually designed their own watches rather than a cheap imitation you can look to Seiko, or Rolex. One band offers watches for as little as hundreds and the other for 10k+
I used to be a Seiko fan. I got a Kinetic when I was 16 and it was my first serious watch! man I loved it and the brand. A few years ago I had a terrible service experience with a Seiko product and I haven't bought another one since. With prices like these I wont be heading back soon either.
It's getting to be a cut throat battle among Microbrands lately. One that is set to take the lead in my opinion is the new Erebus Ascent. $349 USD or about $600 AUD. Set for release in September or even earlier .

Watches can demand a price based on a) prestige and b) quality of materials. It doesn't have the prestige to ask 400€ for those features... so something's gotta give. They seem to think "Seiko" name is enough, but I really don't think so. So either price comes down, or they start offering more bang for buck. I am looking forward to your review of the Erebus Ascent!

It may have been once but with renewed competition from Micro-brands, start ups and AliExpress spec monsters I think Seiko is slowly losing that cache.
Seiko keeps pushing their 4r and 6r movement to a higher price range. These 20+ sec deviation watches are basically unusable as "tool watches". Their solar radio control quartz watches, "the selection" line do have some good value-to-price ratio as they come standard with sapphire crystals for less than $200.
Totally! If they increase prices they should absolutely tighten tolerances, increase QC and put sapphire
Not to mention that the 4r is basically a NH35 you find in a lot of Chinese watches that come with everything you may want for half thr price.
Y'know as a side detail, I'm all for milled clasps but on the smaller Seikos a milled foldover can get big, the Strapcode Alpinist bracelet is lovely, but all milled & far too big in profile...anyway main point, yes its a silly price
Seiko: Mid-level range!!! Es-tu devenu fou?!!! I bought that watch and it is just gorgeous. Je l'ai eu pour 360€ et it's worth every penny. Va la voir en magasin, passe la au poignet et tu seras bluffé par la qualité et les finitions. They upgraded the bracelet, the movement to the 4R36, they upgraded the water resistance from 30m to 100m, they upgraded the case finishing, the Indices, the dial... and yet you say the price is too costly! Finie l'époque où tu payais tes montres Seiko 200 et 250 dollars. Tu parles de la dernière collection et tu me compares le prix avec des modèles des années 90 et 2000. Tu veux faire la buzz avec un titre accrocheur, c'est ça ? Ton anglais est correct, mais ton accent laisse à désirer. Don't worry, it gets better with time.
Got mine for$270,US, JDM version, if that makes any difference. I like it so far.

I commented on the UK seiko page pointing out that theyre lovely looking watches, but for the price its insane especially given, as a modder/builder of watches, ivcould make something just as good if not better specs wise for less.
They responded it depends on the material, workmanship etc etc and i thought of course but the value isnt there? Its worrying

Material is just plain 316l industry standard. Workmanship is machine made polishing and brushing, same level as the $200 SRPE and SRPD. It's no hand made Zaratsu polishing for crying out loud!

I've always liked the seiko ssk003, but would never pay £420 for it and on ebay they're going for anywhere between £190-250 so I should imagine these new models in a year will be the same

No value in these watched. With micro brands and Chinese brands such as San Martin offering so much more for a lot less, there is no reason for these. Seiko really needs to wake up and start offer better value.

Nope, no negative vibes, you are 100% accurate in all aspects. If these were launched at 150 -200$ they would go like hot cookies, but at 400$, they are laughable. For this money, you can get Jodys new Erebus Ascent and it will feel like cheating the Matrix in comparison. Seiko brought me into the hobby many moons ago and I am happy to own two now vintage 5s. But nowadays, Seiko is not even on my horizon. I get the shivers when I read hardlex in the specs and anything proper from them is grossly overpriced.

Yep, cool looking watches. Very nice. If they were about a third or half the price, anyway. But me, personally, I don't really care anymore about the big brands or their hype. I have plenty of 'big name' brands in my collection, Hamilton, Tissot, Longines, Seiko, Citizen, Bulova and so forth, but aside that I do want to get myself my grail (Oris big crown pointer) one day still, I'll stick pretty much entirely with microbrands and AliExpress homages and whatever else, from here on out I think.
Those people that look down their noses on homages can do so all they want, but their popular claims of "original" designs, and "better" quality, fall flat when the big brands are leaning almost entirely on (at best) rewarmed 50-75 year old legacy designs (and a bunch of those are dubious in "original" design claims to start with) for the most part, with cranked up retail prices and downgraded specifications. They don't get "original design" credit from me anymore, they've milked that stream dry. And they (almost without fail) don't have the performance in material and technical specifications and finishing to justify their prices. They can think hard on their business practices if in the future they ever want to recapture customers that think like me, because I am entirely done with their almost entirely marketing driven hype trains.
I guess Seiko saw their low specs overpriced watches sell and many people still defend their minimum effort so they try to push it even more.
There months from now you'll be able to get one for 250 €.

I can't even blame seiko for this. If I could poop in a box and people were willing to pay me $400 for it, why on earth wouldn't I do that. As long as people are willing to pay high prices for low quality, seiko should keep doing what they are doing.
I’ve never owned a seiko but have many AE watches with the NH35 movement . I don’t think I will ever own one as if you look at the specs for the money they make no sense especially if you are on a budget .

The actual watch looks good. But if you are gonna buy it you must be really inlove with the watch.
First, I genuinely like this watch. Second it’s definitely overpriced. But that’s the direction I think Seiko is headed unfortunately. They are willing to lose some enthusiasts to gain more mainstream non enthusiast buyers. It’s a financial decision at the end unfortunately. At that’s what I think. Thanks!

Unfortunately i dont think we will ever get Sapphire on sekio watches unless there grand or king sekio's or just really over priced models. Hardlex is sekio's invention, they spent the time and $ to research, test , design and produce hatdlex so they wont abandon it just because mirco brands and other are giving us Sapphire on $300 watches. Its like if ford made a really good engine for a good price and then dodge made a better engine at the same or lower price ford isn't going to abandon their engine design and buy dodege engines to put in there cars, even though its clearly better.
Shitko: 1960s build quality yet 2024 inflationary prices combined with no quality control checks.
FWIW, I tried these on a couple of weeks ago and they are a huge step up in quality over the previous versions, especially the bracelet and the finishing. Given what they’ll actually cost at retail after discounts, they feel very fairly priced compared to what other retail brands offer
Thank you very much for that remark. Where did you get the chance to see these, they shouldn't out until May? They better be much better quality than the previous ones at that price point, but the question ia6are they better quality than the SRPE and SRPD families, knowing they cost over 50% more?
@@Horologique I was at my local seiko AD when the rep was there to take orders on the new models and he let me try on some of the samples he brought with him. I was really impressed with these in particular-the bracelet and end links were solid and comfortable and the dial and case looked great. The movement is, of course an upgrade as well. Is it worth 50% more? Hard to say and up to each of us but assuming these will be about $300 after discounts I’d happily grab one at that price.
San Martin, Cronos, and other AliEx brands are offering far higher specs AND quality at lower prices. Seiko can get stuffed.
People need to accept the RRP for Seiko and citizen will always be higher than what you will pay at a retailer. I've seen basically every recent Seiko model selling new for half the RRP. Even lower if you're willing to go pre-owned

Seiko is going a way price wise, I absolutely do not like. The new 5s are nice, but pricing (in all lines, not only the 5s) is insane.

The current Seiko 5s still retail from 275-350 USD. The 200-250 price you mention is gray market. You’ll be able to get one of these for 250 in 6 months too so I think you’re being a little over dramatic.
If you compare retail for the SPRE and SRPD it's 300 or under, which makes these over 50% more expensive. Why?

The dresskx has not crept up with inflation since release. If it did it would cost nearly €400 in today's money. Seiko does not increase prices of watches after release. As a watch UA-camr I would expect you to know things like this.

Seiko know they've got such a hardened fan base they can easily pump out inferior quality for highly inflated prices and people will still buy them purely down to the crazy notion of brand name and "heritage".
Sadly, that's a great way to lose your Fanbase, as most of us admired Seiko because they gave us so much at decent prices. If you remove the value factor then they are just another brand

Seiko does not increase their prices after watches are released and Inflation makes up most of the increased cost compared to the dresskx. The rrp of a dresskx is still the same today as it was at release.
As some have mentioned seiko run a vertically integrated business which is way more expensive that what cheap Chinese brands and microbeands do.
This watch is a significant step up from the snxs - water resistance, bracelet, domed crystal, movement, case finishing which includes mirror polishing, better ergonomics
You don't have to buy it at €400. It's a Seiko and will be discounted below €300 within weeks

Talking about assumptions ... my understanding is that people who watch UA-cam watch videos are informed watch enthusiasts and often MORE informed on the subject than the average person.
@@karlsenula9495 you would think so but there seems to be a lack of understanding at the costs of running a fully vertically integrated watch company . Like, is it free to manufacture your own steel, sapphire, lume etc and is it free to machine your own parts, creating the machines and factories required to do so? The costs of all the employees to do all these things?
The only other brand in the world at Seiko's level is Rolex in terms of vertical integration and you ain't getting one for €400
Also Seiko sells to dealers at 50-60% of RRP as the dealers need to make profit as well.

@@pk1342 I don't think people would be questioning the cost if it were not for some of Seikos other now infamous issues like QC misalignment, and some of the specs like the clasps, crystal etc. that at Seikos level of production would be a minimal per unit cost ... Plus all the money they get from outsourcing their movements to other brands. I think most viewers understand the structural, decent labor wage (don't forget Seiko has also outsourced much of it's manufacturing to countries with lower labor costs), design, advertising/ marketing costs.
However also remember Seiko used to be the beginner collector, low cost, great value for money watch i.e. SKX but are now (for whatever reasons good or bad I'm not arguing either) pricing themselves out of that category.
Pagani PD1690 with same movement and much better specs for £40 all day long... Seiko are having a laugh.... 🫵🤣🚫
