hey! very interesting video! im really new to modding diode in dirt pedals and i'd like to ask whether if there's some rules in changing the kinds of diode with other kind that rarely mentioned? cuz in my case, i really want to experiment with different diodes but i just want to make sure that i dont really roast my pedal because i put the wrong diode to the wrong circuit where certain kinds of diode is only fit for. for instance, i have a boss ds-1 pedal that has two 1N4148 diodes on d4 and d5 position, and i already did a mod where i just have to simply take them off and i just wonder if i can get a different characteristic by putting new unused diodes which i get from my broken amp, those are: red LEDs (which is pretty commonly mentioned alongside 1N4148s and no trouble to switch around them as far as i know of), and these others rarely mentioned 1N5240Bs, and 1N4744As (well to me they're unfamiliar). So are those rarely mentioned diodes are safe to replace the 4148s in my ds-1 pedal? what will happen if i just put them in the d4 position or d5 position only? and what tonal response that i will get after?? thank you :)

Hello, ive been a fan of your channel for quite sometime now, and i learned a ton already. Thanks for your help!
I have a question, maybe you could help me because i can't find any info about this.
I have a guitar pedal which has an issue with its on-off switch. Since its an always on pedal, I'd like to get rid of the switch completely so literally it becomes a real always on pedal. Can you help me? Thanks in advance!!

What's a good 3PDT switch? Need a latching one to replace my broken Small Clone switch, looking for a switch that stomps easily and doesn't need much force to turn it on

+1 on changing the IC. I changed the op amp on my RAT to an LM308. Its a completely different pedal since.

Yep. Or a 1p8t switch. You can do that on the clipping diodes as well

So after hearing this I think it is possible to make the dime distortion sound better or just different by changing the clipping diodes.

Maybe you answer it in the video, but what is the model of that case?
Also, have you done a video on a power sag knob?

Hi Chris, the Tubescreamer is a 1590bb, overkill for a tubescreamer but it was my 3rd build approximately. I do have a voltage sag video, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/hCOfAgqXV1c/v-deo.html

Not sure, never done it before, but you would be playing around with mains voltage so prob not advised. GL

Please fill me in. Ive always been under the impression Germanium Diodes were clear for example the 1n34a i used in my Klon Clone. And that silicon Diodes were cylindrical black diodes, so can their be Germanium Black Diodes and Clear Silicon diodes? If so what are these two materials and the differences. Is it like with Capacitors where youve got Film, Ceramic, and plastic?? What is it that we are specifically talking about when we say Germanium diodes/ SIlicon Diodes. Thanks for the knowledge, it would be greatly appreciated!

Is there a special name for the type of socket that are using for the diodes? I'm struggling to find them online.

@PollinatorMk2 I read a thread on DIYSB's about the LM308 / slew rate etc, recently. I always thought it was an expensive chip because it was high quility, not because it was out of production! lol

Isn't it possible to use a five position rotary switch for the input capacitors and use 5 different capacitors ?

How do I determine the input capacitor?

    • @DiyguitarpedalsAu
      @DiyguitarpedalsAu  11 років тому

Check the schematic of the pedal. The input capacitor is the one closest to the input jack. Your signal must pass through this capacitor.

Get out the dmm, some alligator clips (double ended) and download a function generator and feed a 1khz sine wave in to the input..use alligator clips and a couple sewing needles to poke around.. sheild to ground tip to probe.. start at the output and work your way backwards until you hear that 1khz sine wave come out of your amp.. PS use a solid state amp to avoid damaging more expensive tube components.

  • @PollinatorMk2

About the "better/worse" IC thing, it's worth noting that the Holy Grail of Rats, the LM308N, has a pathetic slew rate. So high-quality Burr Brown isn't appropriate in all circuits, specially dirt boxes.
