One important technique for tig welding stainless steel is to get the puddle started quickly and to get moving quickly before too much heat builds up.
Because stainless steel is not very thermally conductive, heat does not dissipate quickly and its easy to overheat.
In this video, you will see getting a puddle started quickly at 120 amps and after 2 or 3 dabs, reducing amperage to around 90 amps on .120 wall stainless tubing.
Also toward the end of the video, you will see the importance of purging the back side of stainless steel that is fully penetrated. - Навчання та стиль
Whenever I think my TIG welding is starting to come together, I watch these videos and realize, nope...I still suck....LOL. Nearly everything I have learned however, that wasn't from hard-knock disasters....was from watching this channel. Jody is the man!
I totally agree with you man
Я сварщик из России научился на этих видео
Dear viewers. Tig welding .065 stainless tubing for my sailboat railing, Davits and hard top. I found purging made my welds less grey and more silver with some pink and blues. I’m running 60 amps 3/32 tung, #10 cup and 1/8 filler. I got some .045 wire and #12 cup on the way. I got 6 grand in materials and tools into this project with the roller , bender , welder, buffing supplies, and tubing. Got it all bent and mocked up, Now it’s showtime haha. Thanks for the videos! Still trying to conceive how Jody can tig .065 at 100 amps. Master Jody.
Good stuff Jody! Thanks for the shout out with the torch lead holder! F.Y.I. The red one is for a stick lead, The blue is generally used for your Tig torch. Jimbo!
couldn't find the correct one in my messy shop. time for a cleaning day. red one worked fine tho.
Best teacher on you tube, thanks for another great video.
Nice 👌
I'm learning more every video then trying it in my shop the next day. Thanks for all the help Jody
See a lot of guys on UA-cam that are pretty good at tig. But you sir are an expert. Great vids helped me learn to weld stainless when I just about to give up.
Another excellent video with a well appreciated narration! Thanks for sharing!
i"m proud of my self that my welding looks preety close to what you showed here :] mostly thanks from your tips
Just got the stubby gas lens with the included jazzy 10 and I’m loving it! Really helping me with my stainless so far
Thank you Jody.
Would love a T-Shirt that says:
“What would Jody do?”
A question most of us ask when something isn’t welding right. Thank you.
He would use enough voltage to hold a tight arc...and then hold a tight arc.
Jody, you’re my hero, man.
UA-cam shouldn’t even have an option for idiots to choose “unlike” the information is free for God’s sake. Do you see that little “v” at the top left corner, hit that instead of “unlike”. Those individuals are upset that they can’t use an app to lay beads.
Thanks for all the hours it takes to figure out your lighting for the videos, the hours of recording, the hours of editing, then literally giving all of it to us for free. Keep up the amazing work. Stay up!
Awesome video. Trying to get my SS welds up to my level of critique, and this video definitely helped! Keep them coming 👍🏻
Great video. I love learning from your channel. I gonna focus on getting better with my powertig welder.
Thanks Jody for another great video! Nice camera angles and shots! Content and quality is always top notch on your channel. I can’t wait to get a tig machine! Be blessed my friend!!!!
عظم الله لكم الاجر لخدمه زوار الامام الحسين
الله يبارك بيكم ويحفظكم
I wish I got to weld stuff in position! lol Really neat to see how the coverage effected the color.
as always, thanks for the instruction Jody. Master at work.
Thanks for the mm as well as the inch sizes Jody
I started stick welding 45 years ago, then learned MIG that was an easy transition but my TIG welding SUCKS. I don't think everyone learning to TIG is cut out for this. But Jodi must TIG weld in his sleep to, because his results look flawless. Kudos to you for devoting your time in an effort to teach us dummies to learn TIG.:)
Great video. Thanks for all the tips included here.
I picked up a tig finger recently and it works as advertised.
Very useful videos on your channel. Thanks for charging your knowledge.
Hello,
I am a welder, too. and also had a channel to teach welding videos in Taiwan.
I want to ask you
What's the camera lens you chose to make videos? (because the strong light may damage CCD)
I love your videos very much.
ALWAYS enjoy ur vids. Particularly the SS ones. One tip we use at work
We use 95/5 argon /hydrogen on the torch. Straight Argon on ID purge
This helps greatly for penetration on fusion welds on Sanitary:hygienic welds especially when u may have high sulphur content
You the man Jody thanks for the great video 👊🏻
another great video with some good tips, thanks mate
Always very informative, thanks
10:17 & onward is a valuable lesson.
What i have the most difficulty with is getting a puddle started and managing to turn the heat down quick enough & get moving without sugaring the backside.
It's also hard to get a nice "wet" puddle with stainless steel . The puddle tends to ball up / solidify if I back off on the heat too much. Sticky filler ain't fun !
This one is a re-watcher.
Thank you :)
As always very informative.
Excelent job Jody
Thanks
Thankyou youare the máster wending nice job the color is beautiful!
it's a pretty amazing video pal. Could you make a video welding 6G TIG stainless stell since de root pass in 6 o' clock position til the 12 o' clock. If you could show us the keyhole techinique it will be awesome man. Thanks you for all job for supporting the welder worldwide
Awesome tips and tricks Jodi!. I’m digging the tig finger and the rest of the merch that I received. By the way your customer service is top notch thank you. Do you have recommendations on respirator PPE?
Very interesting, thanks for sharing with us.
what video footage do you use? very nice picture, clear
Thanks man! Super helpful!! Working on a 4130 roll cage right now, can you offer any tips to welding out of position when you can’t really see one side of the joint? Say, in the floorboard of a car for example?
I just wanted to ask...I use the # 8 clear furick cup set up and it’s great but I do a lot of thin gauge sheet metal repair...do you have a adapter set up for a #17 torch using a 1/16 electrode?
Very informative.
Bob
I just got me an ahp 201, I’m so lost with what accessories to get, it comes with a 17 rotoflex torch with a 9 head as well. I’d like to get some of the glass or larger cups but not for sure what I need. I don’t want to buy unnecessary parts for it , cause that money can go to filler and coupons. It’d be awesome if you could do a video just on torch parts, you know, you need this for that, if you have this then you don’t need that type of deal. Love your videos!
Hey Jody! Another fan of yours... I'm just starting to TIG weld. Food grade stainless is most likely where I'll start, welding on triclamps to pots for a brewery I'm making. As a newbie welder, I'm still unsure of the type of TIG welder that you would recommend. Which one would you start with?
Beautiful work
Really nice video, once again😎🤘
nice , thanks for the lesson..
Jody... Question. I want to practice "tig walking the cup" what #17 torch setup is best to start with ? Thanks
I was hoping for some tips on shielding the back side where it's not easy to purge, as in SS tanks and mufflers. I've had some success with Solar Flux in exhaust systems, and have taped aluminum foil to create a pocket where I had access, but was looking for a few more ideas from The Master.
How do you decide when to clean parts/filler rod with acetone or alcohol?
Really love that fixture plate. Where can one get those clamps for a good deal?
Whats the tungsten and filler rod size being used in the video? Secondly i dont have a pedal, using a on off hand switch, i tried at 50amps and it creates holes. If i lower down the amp, it takes time for the puddle and it creates a lot of heat. Any advise?
How fast you must go to avoid the grey weld i get on that thickness? Im on 85 amps and the 316 im trying to weld gets grey on the color. I have trued both with number 8 and number 12 cups...
What do you think about solar flux? if you're on a job site fixing a failed stainless rail. Where purging not feasible. Would it hold up to the test of time?
How much cfh Do you said the back purge to to keep good coverage
Thank you.
Making a charcoal grill out of a beer keg. Having fun tig welding 1/8 th flat bar to it then went with mig with 308l a little easier
Just as an FYI: I noticed your tungsten point is very short and stubby. When running DC, you are able to weld thicker steel at a lower amperage & have finer control of the arc and puddle if you shape your tungsten point a little longer. Maybe 5/8" to 3/4" back and then down to a fine point. An aerospace weldor showed me that and I've been sold ever since.
If you were modifying an existing air line (rerouting a section) would you bother trying to back purge if its a long run of stainless pipe ?
New to tig here, is there a reason why you're not purging this, since it is stainless?
ok 120 Amps, but thickness and frequency at what value? Thank you
If you are lap welding a stainless exhaust pipe do you have to back purge?
How much percent is the foot pedal pushed? I’m starting to get in to tig and still learning yet
Hi Jody, my company has a product that requires a t pipe joint just like here. The difference is that the weld is required to be full penetration ( full 3mm wall thickness) due to corrosion and fatigue reasons. If you still have this pipe, could you make a video showing the fit up and weld to get full penetration with this pipe? Our supplier seems to be struggling with this.
Which one of these TIG cups would be the safest to use for vaporizing weed in your bong?
I'm from Brazil and I really like your videos, it's a shame not having a translation
it would be interesting which machine setting, and further information .... electrode type, diameter, etc. you take. greetings from Germany, keep it up ... you got it
Hi there Jody, been watching you for years and you make great content, can i order stuff from you store as i am in Australia:)
What is your post flow for SS/regular steel?
Good-day Jodie, I have to tig weld a 4” sanitary fitting on top but to one side of a keg, could you please if possible how to set up and carry out a purge and tig welding it in.
Thanks
why not ask on the weldingtipsandtricks forum?
Genuine question could you tig that with 8cfm
Metallurgical questions surrounding stainless.
Did some socket welds for some refrigeration piping a while back. Used 309L-16 SMAW for 304 pipe to carbon steel/low alloy valves and couplings. All 304 to 304 done with 308L-16. I had to weld on some threaded 316 nipples as well and I couldn’t really decide which rod to go with so I used 308L-16. Metallurgically what should I usefor SMAW/GTAW welding 304 to 316 stainless? Appreciate any feedback Jody!
Another thing I forgot to add. This was for ammonia refrigeration piping. Is stainless pipe the best bet as far as corrosion resistance or will it deplete certain alloys in stainless?
Did u use the same tig finger during the video and do use the same tig finger on other videos.I seen Burt spots. How does the finger last
Where did you get those blank tig gloves from?
Thanks
really great.. 👍👍👍👍
No internal purge with inert gas? Won't you get the dreaded 'sugar' and other contaminate issues on the inner wall? Or are these so thick that the weld won't penetrate all the way into the material?
I thought the rule of thumb was 1A/thou so why do you back off to 90 thou when you get the weld pool started as the tube thickness is 120 thou. ? What do you recommend for Amps. Is it because you are moving a bit slow that you reduce the Amps etc etc Please explain. Thanks Mike
Hey sir can you do a video with a water cooled torch
Thanks.
Anybody have tips for filling gaps up to 3/16 on stainless? I've been welding for 7 years but tig welding for 2 months, I dont have any issues with a good fit but I'm having trouble filling gaps and that's happening everyday now due to bad machining of parts and what not. So far haven't seen any helpful videos, any tips would be greatly appreciated!
Is there an easy way to clean up the discoloration on stainless?
I manufacture stainless steel hinges. Im trying to make welding head butt hinge but sadly Can’t launch because I’m stuck at welding. Can you recommend what’s the best solution to make welding head butt hinge?
Awesome
Nice jig plate...
Nice
Yes sir thanks 🙏
How do you film your arc shots
Union boilermaker out of local 154!! Any other boilermakers checking this out ???
is it bad to weld stainless right off the steel table?
Nice 👌
“Sugaring”... so we saw on the plate that you got sugaring. Also..on the inside of the pipe there wasn’t any sugaring. I assume because of the amperage used. What about on the inside of the other pipe where we might’ve seen some heat affected area? Might there have been some sugaring in there?
How thick is that table top boss??
What kind of alcohol you using to the clean the rod?
YummyPie532 isopropyl
What happened to the clear glass cups?
I still use the clear #8 cups a lot. weldmongerstore.com/collections/frontpage/products/furick-8-pro-cup-4-pack-br-for-9-20-torches
Hi, the subsequent blowing is good, but there is no argon inside the pipe, the seam is dirty.
Just got my first project done with a Furick Cup, went the whole project with a loose cup because i didnt realize i needed to remove the o-ring from my adapter kit.. one step closer to a pro each day😅
Hey Jody
I appreciate your Video's! I learned a lot from you man!
I wonder whats your normal go to grinding degree?
I tested a lot by myself and figured out that for me 29 degree is the best set up. I just wondered what's your standpoint is in this case.
Greetings from Switzerland
Kevin
Man I wish I could find someone that could teach me this stuff In person I'd like to be a real welder and not just a manual laborer with the title of welder.
Do they make gloves like their steak fingers cuz I'm not on pipe
I plan on making some food holders out of some 5/32 & 3/16 stainless rod. Any suggestions for keeping the welds "sugar " free?
Back up gas
Argon
You say that you set the gas at about 20 at the regulator. I did that and checked the gas flow. My flow is 20 at the regulator and about 14 at the torch. So, which is correct? Should I be 20 at the torch?
I imagine he's
In the top 10 in the world. I'm only 39 ain't seen whole lot but will bet on this one
Söyleyenecek kelime yok.
Saygı duyarım.çok iyi.
