When I started welding I didn't have an experienced all process welding teacher. Jody taught me everything I watched his videos everyday over and over pausing where I needed. He was my teacher. Was able to get really good. Than we got a much more experienced teacher and he got me cert ready in 3 months way before the people in my class that didn't take my advice of watching wielding tips and trick videos.
@@2000jago I used to pause on puddles to see the diameter/as well as on settings he'd post in video, sometimes even on stick out for Tig and such to see if I was doing it right lol. Rewind too
I started Welding in 2018 at a food production facility. I picked it up pretty quickly (luckily I had some old heads to teach me the tricks to doing repair welds on the production floor on dirty old joints in hard to reach places having to weld in weird positions) I became very passionate about the craft, it was all I could think about all the time. I found this channel and watched a couple of hours worth of Jody's videos just about every single day of the week. Fast forward to today, I work at a different food facility and my boss compliments me on my welds all the time, people comment on how much knowledge I have of the metallurgy and technical things about backing, purging, dissimilar metal welds etc. I'd just like to thank you, your videos have gotten me to the point where I have more than TRIPLED my income and furthered my love for the craft. This is proof that if technology is ruining the youth, it is only the fault of the youth. There is an endless amount of knowledge on the internet, whether you choose to learn it is entirely up to you.
You guys call it sugaring, here in New Zealand we call it "cauliflower" and if you're in the dairy industry you'll be looking for a new job real quick. Thanks for these videos, you're a real one. I bought one of your tig fingers years ago, maybe 8 years? Still going strong and have saved a fortune on toasted gloves. I couldn't do handrail work without it. The first thing I do with every young apprentice is send them to this channel.
I'm currently taking a TIG course at a local college, and I have to say, your videos have put me ahead of the rest of the class!! Much appreciated and guaranteed that I'll be buying your merch. Especially the TIG finger!
"You penetrate where you don't want to penetrate. Nothing good happens..."😆 I've been subscribing to your channel for a while and appreciate the contents. I'm trying to learn how to TIG and your videos are great.
I took welding classes at a local tech school to broaden my skillset so I could offer more services and do more inhouse repairs /fabrication from my small, independent repair shop. My instructor was an older gentleman who had done it all including having his own successful welding business. His nickname was "The Kid", because he was that good. He even had that airbrushed on his helmet. You, sir, are nothing short of The Kid, Jr. Thank you for all your time and effort to make these amazing videos and for sharing invaluable information. I use no other source for improving my welding skills. FYI, I have both sizes of your TIG fingers.
Jody I had a really good instructor in school but your vids have really added a lot of depth and wisdom into the base knowledge that made me go from total greenhorn to extremely competent in a very short amount of time. Thank you for your work
This is excellent timing. I'm in the middle of switching jobs and these stainless reminders are great. There will be stainless repairs at the new job. :)
Been watching a lot of your videos while I wait for my new welder to show up. I just wanted to tell you, I already bought both Tig fingers. Lol. Thanks for the Informative videos sir.
my first welding job, was in fact TIG "fusion welding" we called it where i worked (we built sanitary plate heat exchangers). I used a purged hand operated turntable. one piece of stainless tubing ( probably 304) and a triclamp ferrule on one or both ends. there was a purge hole in the middle of the turntable where the gas goes in, and we put a plate with a hole on top of the pieces with tape over it, and poked a pin hole, and purged with about 12-15 cfh. one hand turns the table and the other hand holding the torch. it's cool to see a nice clean flat weld inside afterwards, but then we polished it out, so you'd never even know. on the subject of backing material to fill holes, i've found copper to be more suited to high amps (150A+), as it seems like aluminum sticks a bit more, and when you break it off it can take chunks of aluminum with it.
Spring steel ( 5160 for example ) to mild steel, tig and mig welding would be a video I would like to see. Possible/proper filler metals, preheating, post heating etc... Not sure how many other viewers are interested.
I'm welding outside corners on 1,5mm thickness stainless wood hot tub ovens and that angle iron chill bars for outside corners is genius. I'm struggeling with the gas coverage for them.
Top video. I wondered for years how to get the colored welds. I changed to big cup gas lenses and it made the difference. A good video would be welding up heavy cast cylinder heads and castings. I can do it with added Helium but I saw a pro do it once and he did a five second preheat and used what I think was a number 5 relatively small cup and did a brilliant flowing weld on a heavy cast head with just argon. His puddle started so quick, I couldnt work out why it seemed so easy for him to get a clean deep penetrating weld and for me a PIA just to get anything clean on cast and my puddle takes a while to start.
i work with a guy that is hooked on his number 5 cup. i think he just likes being able to get it into tight spaces, and he's learned how to make it work well for him, so he doesn't have to change the way he does his work. he has almost 20 years more experience than me (3 years) and it shows.
Great video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I am a self taught welder (that's me being generous about my skills), and your videos do help a lot!
Jody you're the bomb, another great video buddy, although my everyday welding is mostly MIG I'm always checking your tig videos when a stainless or aluminium job comes in
As I'm prepping myself to weld my first exhaust to my car in stainless, I do wonder about back purging. I've seen a lot of people don't really care when it comes to exhaust systems but I've seen as many do care and back purge so that leaves me wonder how important it is for this case? Instead of back purging I'm considering using flux to coat the cuts. Thanks for the great videos!
When I built my headers (304 SS) I used SolarFlux Type B and it worked well. The backs of the welds weren't shiny but there was no sugaring. I was lucky enough to get some from work so I didn't have to buy a whole can to use maybe 10% and have the rest sitting on my shelf forever. It's a little expensive but in the overall scheme of things it's cheaper than the argon would be.
@@kennethstaszak9990 Yep, Solar Flux works and it's a good alternative in many situations. It leaves a glassy, hard deposit on the back side that is hard to remove, but for an exhaust it probably doesn't need to be removed. If you've got a turbo downstream you'd probably want to use a wire wheel to remove any loose bits that might otherwise foul it.
Just want to drop a comment here about Weldmonger Store, I orderd from the online store and recieved the package. and it was partially damaged and taped up and some of the items was missing i mailed Postnord and USPS to ask about it, got no response so i Emailed Weldmonger Store and they immediately shipped the missing items and MORE. thanks for your videos! it helped me a lot to get started with TIG welding! if you didnt have pack purge equipment, would it be possible to just fill the volume of the part (like in your sanitary tube example) with argon before welding? i know the welds will sag in a little more then with proper purge pressure, but could that be enough to prevent sugaring?
Been looking over a few of your video's. Have some exhaust work to do, going to try welding stainless on my mig using stainless flux core wire. Have you ever tried it ?
Hey Jody quick question for you I hope you can help. How can you tell the difference between 304 and 316 stainless? The shop im working in uses both 304 and 316 and 99% of the time it's grained both side removing any identification markings. Are there any differences in the puddle to watch out for or discolouration in the bead differences afterwards? ie 316 easier to keep silver/straw 304 more blue and purple? Thanks love the videos been watching for many years
Jody Going to attempt to butt weld 36" seam 16 ga 304 Stainless steel. Can I lay this flat and weld the seam all the way or should I skip around. I do not want any warping! Please write back or comment if you have time. Love your channel...
Sir i want to weld ss316L 1mm thickness coil and make a belt out of it.when i tried tig welding with argon gas and tungsten grinder my coil got destorted and warped around the joint.Have made very little use of filler metal and kept meter reading at 45 ampml.Request you to suggest a suitable solution
With stainless I almost always use a non stop forward progression, and don't use the step method. I've had much bigger results and lower distortion by not pausing every dab, unlike on steel or aluminum that are much more forgiving with that technique.
For me stainless plate is a forgone conclusion I’m going to be bending and grinding flat it cause it’s so warpy. Most times I’m doing stitch welds instead of full welds just to get the warping down.
@@weldingtipsandtricks And in my experience it matters whether I'm welding an inside corner or an outside corner or a lap joint. I also find that for very thin stuff (less than 0.035") in stainless I need even less than the one amp per 0.001" or maybe about 20-25 amps for the 0.035." I wish my welder could speak out the amps while I'm modulating with the pedal!
Chromium oxide and if your sanitary welder you already know for those of you that don't the amount of cleanup that has to be in put into getting that out if it's too bad then you probably be looking for another job
