- In this video, you'll see aluminum TIG welding techniques for outside corner joints while putting together a cube project. Cubes are fun projects, and there is a lot to learn from welding a cube. Visit my store at weldmongerstore.com for TIG Fingers, DVDs, and other quality welding tools.
We'll explore some about how to prop so you are steady, how to feed filler wire, and also how to use pulse settings and lay wire technique for certain situations. I set the dynasty 280 to 140 amps and used the foot pedal for most of the cube but there was one joint that had a small gap so I decided to use some pulse settings and the lay wire technique for that joint. There are many different techniques that could be used and many different cups that would have worked just fine. I just showed a few things I think might help those struggling with TIG welding aluminum.

Ha, awesome. I repair a ton of pontoons myself. You'll find the clear cup he sells helps alot, especially when you have to use a mirror to get the back side of an "m" bracket on the top of the toon.

Most of those so called tig fingers are counterfeit and don't last through a weld without falling apart.

I have watched Jody for years, I have used the cube training for my apprentices in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. They can tack the boxes together, then rotate the box and play with the machine settings to get their "own" settings. Keep it up
Much better description then the videos we watched in class. We made a cube and were told because of the pressure/heat the last hole would keep blowing out, but you mentioned blasting the the hole while its cooled. I drilled a hole in mine, maybe I'll try filling it in.

Awesome Jody thank you. I love both size tig fingers! Haven’t had the opportunity to tig with them yet, still waiting to get a machine lol. But still use them for longer mig runs. I also have built a couple cubes that I mig welded together learning from your previous videos and use them as a props as well!!! Awesome stuff!! Be blessed!!!

I did a bunch of 6” cubes a while back and the challenge was to inject a cup of water into the vent hole before you close it up. Back purging with argon also helps.
I finally wore out a tig finger, Jody! It started to fray and it didn’t last long after that. I untucked it and use it as a static prop now, just to try and get some good use out of the old feller.

That is a great shop practice, to wipe down your filler rod before using. You never know what contamination occurred before use.
You should do a short video about how you capture such great arc shots! It’d be interesting to see what you’re doing behind the scenes. Waiting for 2019 Weldmonger video to hit the store...

One thing I had to do in school and curious if u have ever done after welding the cube. Weld in 1/2” coupling and hydro test to failure record pressures make contest out of it
And u will have a really cool shape when done. All the flats ballon out

I wouldnt have thought those cups would make that much of a diffrence but I demo'd one from a local supply shop. Holy smokes! It's like welding with a diffrent machine.

I almost bought your machine, but I wanted the 3 amp minimum DC with the portability potential for 120v outlets.

I made something like this recently except mine was made from triangles cut from 3x3x¼ aluminum angles. I cleaned up 24 of them and tacked them together to make 6 square's, then tacked the 6 square's together to make a box. I did forget to drill a hole in it and the last weld didn't want to weld up at the end, so I drilled out a big enough hole to weld a small fitting on. Now I have a somewhat lop sided aluminum box with a fitting that isn't centered at all and the box wobbles. But at least my welds look crispy👍🇺🇸
Enjoyed the video Jody. I've got two I have to build for someone and it requires .050 5052. If you have any of that laying around maybe make one with that material, I would love to see how it SHOULD be done.

Drill some holes In the sides of the cube and you'll have the best set of dice around!
Flex head is a must.
Would be neat if you could have a secondary camera showing how you control amperage throughout the weld, I think it would help get a feel for good pedal control
Jody, I prefer to either sand (belt sander) or file (Vixen file) the sheared edges of sheet or plate to get rid of the dross forming torn material in the sheared edge. Seems to allow less gas to keep the same weld cleaner- but needs much more gas to shed the 'salt&pepper' from the bits of torn material left from a shear? Would be good to see some of those edges in 5356 - no boat builders use 40 series filler.
I would give my left lugnut for Crummy fixture plate. It's just genius.

Jody my son and bought a Vulcan mp 220 to learn tig welding works great on mild Steele but when we do aluminium what do you recommend for gas and tugsten we are doing scratch start. Love your videos and has helped a bunch with mig and stick any info would be great hope one day to lay a weld as good as yours awesome Job

Great video and extremely clean technique. I do have a question if you wouldn’t mind answering it when you have the time. How would you recommend that someone with little to no T.I.G welding work experience could get a job performing T.I.G welding to gain vital work experience? Assuming that this person has experience T.I.G welding but only in a school certification program and no work experience yet.

I'm about to order me one of those tig fingers. You should make a tig glove out of that material. I want a whole glove. I bought a tig finger from the local weld supply and it helps but I don't think it works very good. the tig fingers I see in your videos look like they a better than the one I have. so yeah I might just get me one.

Just wondering if it’s really necessary to file the edges or can you just leave them sheared if they are cleaned well? Looks like you’re getting a nice clean puddle.

ohh man i used to do aluminium diesel tanks for army vehicles and i sure had my bouts of burning hands hanging in there just to finish a weld nicely ,it got awfully painful at times i had to remove the glove as it kept scorching me with all the heat that leather glove absorbs

95-112 amps full pedal 120hz 5051 3/32 rod and tungsten with out scratching the cube.
I have an aluminium profile , butane torch , some brazing rods that melt very fast and has flux in them, could I use 4043 or 4047 with arc or the butane torch ?will it work or will the profile melt before the rods?
Hey Jody, great tips as always. I'm hoping you could do a video on tig welding on non moveable projects. I'm currently building a roll cage and having a difficult time with propping. Sometimes there's just no way to do it, and sight lines are really difficult, too! How do you deal with these issues? Inquiring minds want to know!
I can't help you with the propping, you just need to be in a really flexible mood and do what you can. I will give you my favorite trick for roll cages, though. When you have to have an inspection hole anyway, vent all of your tubes to each other so the inspection hole becomes a vent for the entire cage and you never have to worry about a weld blowing out on a joint. Also, I use a linear thumb amperage control instead of a foot pedal, they are worth their weight in gold for many positions inside the car.

About how much were you able to weld before you had to let the cube cool? I'm ASSuming you didn't do it all at once. I could be wrong.

I usually set the machine with slightly higher amps than I actually need so I am not usually full pedal. But sometimes, I experiment

Hey, Jody! I've always hear that tig, and arc welds are the strongest. What do you think about this? Which welds are stronger, while which ones are weaker?
There's a lot of tig snobs that make all kinds of claims. Which process is better? The one that gets the job done best. Need high deposition? Spray-arc mig, Submerged arc or flux core come to mind. Outside in the elements? SMAW (stick) is tried and true. In the shipyard we used tig on pipe for the root and hot pass but switched to stick for fill and cap. And done right, Mr. X-ray wasn't a problem! Learn every process you can. Try hand held sub-arc (squirt), now that's welding blind! LOL!

Hey what do you do about the frequency settings not back feeding into the electrical system in a house, I got a 210 ext in my garage that’s connected to the house and don’t wanna fry my tv/computers while doing HF start etc.
