    Flash Photography Tutorial
    This series of videos is designed to help off-camera flash beginners quickly advance to lighting with purpose. First, this series assumes you have an understanding of the exposure triangle, and are capable of controlling your camera in Manual mode. While it's possible to use flash with semi-automatic modes, I think it's a requirement to understand lighting in manual mode if you want to take control of all aspects of your images. This series is broken down into short, easy-to-digest lessons that progress you from balancing a single light, to using multiple lights outdoors to drive home the story in your image.
    In this video, we go through how thinking of each light as an independent layer can help you see the purpose of multiple lights in a setup. Additionally, we show how using a light meter can help create a more accurate image.

    One thing I would like to add is that once you are creating images to your liking taking a recording a light meter reading on all lights will allow you to repeat the exact same look in minutes at some point in the future or at another location.
    Great video as always Robert!

      Yup, and important your "Settings-records" start early, so you can modify them as things change. I've just moved across to strobes I'm trying to tame six of them and really don't know quite where to start, and I certainly want a record of everything from the ISO and aperture, to whatever the strobe settings prove to be. Working with male athletes the truth is while they get hundreds of happy-snaps, they usually only get one decent shoot if any?...

      Yes, it takes the place of a $50 cable connected to your PC, and only does it for more money.

    Great video, man! I honestly do experience quite a bit of underexposed images because I use Sunny Weather brightness on my camera. The image looks fine on my camera, but when I bring it up on my computer it's darker. Using a light meter would definitely help.

      That bright screen mode kills me. I understand it's usefulness when outside in really bright conditions but it throws me off so much that I just revert to histogram or looking in the EVF instead.

      Sunny Weather is very clearly an 'overclock' of the back LCD at the expense of accuracy. What it does to any tone vaguely close to a highlight is off I have actually turned a client off showing them back of the camera and had to win them back with the viewfinder. :D I almost never leave +2 and doublecheck with the viewfinder on the off chance I do make it to Sunny. However, I will contend that I live in the midwest and can likely get away with that more often than Francisco can.

    Hi Bobert, very very nice tutorial and they are all very beginner-friendly. I am a videography hobbyist and trying to shift more to photography. Lately, I started learning lighting knowledge but found different lights and knowledge could be overwhelming. Do you have a video introducing all different photography lights? (flash, strobe, on-cam, off-cam, etc.)? If not, could you please make one? I think that may be very useful for a lot of new bees like me.

    • @getclay
      @getclay 4 роки тому

      You can use his techniques in the video for any combinations of flash/strobe equipment. If you use lighting, most meters also have an ambient mode.

      For a bargain meter I would suggest an L-308 (any of them). The one I use in the video is a Sekonic L-858d-u, which is Sekonic's flagship meter and includes a lot of advanced features such as flash durations and HSS recording.

    Great video... As always.
    One question though - why did you meter at the wall and not at forinstance behind the model?

  • @tkimaginestudio
    @tkimaginestudio 5 років тому

    When you meter individual light sources (incident metering), you need to retract the dome of the light meter.

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  5 років тому +1

      Not true in all circumstances, otherwise a low-end meter would be useless. While I'd agree you want to retract if you have competing light sources that can influence the results (like exposing for a flash +2/3 stop over ambient conditions), that's not the case inside our studio, which was demonstrated to be pitch black with the camera settings.

    • @tkimaginestudio
      @tkimaginestudio 5 років тому

      @@robhallphoto The question is not whether ambient light influences your metering results -- the pitch black frame only shows that there is no ambient light contribution -- the question is how much the other light sources (strobes) are contaminating the metering result. If you don't retract the dome, you need to shut off all other strobes for each measurement. It is easier to leave them all turned on and just properly focus on one light source during light metering.

    • @opx4real
      @opx4real 5 років тому +1

      @@tkimaginestudio All lights not being metered were turned off. And doing so is incredibly easy with the trigger used.

    • @tkimaginestudio
      @tkimaginestudio 5 років тому

      @@opx4real Not "incredibly easy" unless you are using the Flashpoint R2 Pro version. The standard Godox Xpro makes you press group buttons and the mode button and requires cycling through off, TTL, and manual. It is way easier to always fire all lights and just use the light meter as designed. That's why the dome is retractable.

    i get confused when you say f8 and f5 i just wish you would mention the actual numbers on the light or do a video explaining that

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  4 роки тому +2

      You can't use the numbers on the light as a reference for multiple lights as the distance, light, and modifier both change their relationship between one another. It's completely irrelevant as soon as you change settings, mods or light position.
      Watch either of my videos on stops of light to get more familiar with the concept of Fstops as a method for quantifying light output.

  • @nicodrey9766

    Quick question how do you ser your 4 lights together? I mean sync them thx

    • @robhallphoto
      @robhallphoto  4 роки тому

      all of my lights are Godox X series, which means they all have built in receivers, that when I put a Godox X series transmitter on top of my camera, they all sync.
      If your lighting equipment doesn't have built in receivers you can connect external receivers to them, but you may not have control of the power output depending on the system.
