The nipple is a great time saver. Whether it's a mouse or a touchpad, you need to move your hand away from the keyboard every time if you want to point and click at screen elements. But the nipple is right there... for yours to touch away without even moving your hands very far. Plus your arms would be forever grateful to you because you're not holding a mouse at an awkward wrist and shoulder angle.

And doesn't take up extra space or weight, so I definitely appreciate the option and don't see it being in the way for those who don't use it; it's signature of the Thinkpad.

Can't live without it, even my ThinkPad external mini keyboards has it without the trackpad. I usually disable the trackpad from my Ubuntu to avoid any accidental movement while using the track point mouse

@@_Bashar definitely makes tons of sense on an external keyboard. On the laptop itself I really enjoy having both and being able to use interchangeably whenever; and as you pointed out, one can always disable the one they don't want, it's nice to have the options!

you can use the tent mode to place it in your desktop as part of your setup as a secondary screen while you work on an external monitor as your primary screen, that way tent mode not only would let you have a cleaner view without the laptop keyboard but also save you from having to use a laptop stand since it stands vertically on it's own.

One slight issue I have with tent and tablet mode on these 2-in-1s:
The large bezel near the hinges is at the top rather than the bottom, where it would be much less distracting.
Sadly this is difficult to fix since it would require the same thing bezels at the hinges as everywhere else.

Parts of the design for the TrackPoint/Nipple/Nub/*censored variations* is for field work when you're using something (gloves, etc.) over your hands and the trackpad cannot read your finger inputs. This goes DOUBLE for the touchscreen if it's resistive and not capacitive touch. There are a lot of examples (shops, construction, perhaps hospitals, etc.) It also doubles for if you have a broken trackpad and the repair is difficult/inaccessible at the time. If you're not carrying a mouse or cannot even access one without a platform for it to track anything, the TrackPoint is a favorable option. Another part of the design is when using a keyboard in productivity and not having to move your hand off when you have a pointing stick with buttons that can act with the same basics as a mouse.
That said, not everybody likes it, but it has purpose and utility and those things are part of ThinkPad design language.

Love the trackpoint and dedicated mouse buttons. I use them all the time and think they're part of the thinkpad DNA. That said, I love my X1 Yoga gen 6, but absolutely hate the keyboard. I don''t mind the reduced key travel, its the increased force now required to press down the keys that makes typing on it a chore.

Since you asked about who uses tent mode. I am using my Yoga notebook with the keyboard folded back nearly every day: I put the Yoga on a stand to elevate the monitor and connect my mechanical keyboard and BT mouse, so it becomes sort of a portable desktop replacement. On the other hand, I didn't use it as a tablet a single time in 3 years.

The last lenovo I even had in my life was the X1 yoga 3rd gen. This is a business series for which they offer 3 years warranty. But over the 3 years I had to replace motherboard 3 times, because 2 times in a row they replaced it with a faulty motherboard. 1st replacement had one the two 8GB ram chips failed (soldered) and the 2nd replacement had video output failed. Lenovo clearly doesn't have any quality control in their warranty department. The sad part of the story is when they replaced the MB 3rd time, it was finally in a working condition, but they managed to break the keyboard retraction mechanism (X1 3rd gen had that) and since the warranty ended few days after, they denied any responsobility and offered me a paid service - to fix what they broke.

I have a lenovo from the yoga line from last year. The brushed finish on the sides looks nice, but it scratches everywhere. The ports get the most scratches as when trying to charge it or plug something in there is no way to do it without the type-c touching the sides of the port first. And it only takes type c to touch brushed metal for it to scratch it. You have to be very, very careful when connecting things because otherwise it will scratch. I would have liked to know this before buying it.

For just watching content I use tent mode quite often actually. The laptop takes up a lot less desk space while in tent mode, which is great when you're doing something else.
I also use tent mode for gaming with a controller occasionally because it makes the laptop run more quietly and keeps it slightly cooler.
However my new Flow X13 has some issues where it occasionally just won't rotate the screen unless I restart it. Therefore I use tent mode less than I usually would right now.

you know Matt? let's get something out of the way. I get it, you don't like the trackpoint, but some people who are more productive interacting with the computer with just the keyboard (especially programmers) just like to use trackpoint much better than a trackpad. Honestly, if I use the trackpad too often, sometimes my wrists hurt and that could lead to carpal tunnel. If the nipple disrupts your typing experience, then yeah it's a fair argument.

  • @eithansc

Wow, just NO. The Trackpoint is STILL way more accurate than any touchpad ever can be ^^ The mouse pointing is so much faster and convenient with it! Also that you don't have to move the hand away from the keyboard while moving the cursor over the screen. Also scrolling with the middlebutton is so more satisfying and using real mouse buttons.
But I don't enjoy that indecisive flat buttons very much aswell. Either going full travel buttons or none.

The key benefit of the Trackpoint is that your hand does not have to bend back like with the touchpad. Does the touchpad have some functions (gestures, etc.) that are useful? Sure. But for basic point and click, hold and drag, etc. the Trackpoint is way more comfortable and convenient because the hand stays right on the keyboard.

I use mine in tent mode when at work at my desk. It’s on a laptop riser with two monitors on either side and all three screens are at eye-level. I use an external keyboard and mouse. All are connected to a Thinkpad dock.
The nipple is faster than the trackpad and requires less fishing and hand gestures to operate, reducing user fatigue by allowing the palm of the hand to rest on the trackpad.

Well, I'll throw in my 2 cents. I purchsed the 7th gen 2 days after release date...options were limited. It came with 1270p, FHD monitor, 16GB, and the standard FHD cam(no IR). Lenovo build out options are volatile to say the lease. One day, you will notice all pcs available for "immediate ship" limited to 1250 to 1260p processors. No OLED, no LTE capacity, etc. I built mine out only to be informed that the ETA was 4plus months...erghh. So I went with the 1270p that was there one day, gone the next. Long short- I was very disappointed. First off, the rep told me all of the ThinkPad's came with an IR cam, not true as mine didnt. For this kind of money, yes, I want to take adavantage of Windows Hello- Face Recognition, and the Glance security software that is ahead of the curve. Coming from the C940 consumer model, the chassis was clearly cut from a much more durable cloth, but that's where it ended. I don't know if my machine was to hot off the press still infested with minor bugs and what not, but the core temps were hitting 100 even after I updated BIOS, hardware, wind 11, etc. with the kicker being that I was only running 1 chrome window. WTF! The fans were humming away 24/7, The benchmarks were the same as my c940 and I could fry an egg on the underside of the chassis. I was bummed. I jumped onto Lenovo's website and noticed a complete 1 off, which I've still yet to see to this day. "In stock"- x1 7th gen w/ 1280p VPRO(big difference), OLED, FHD and IR cams, 32GB Ram, 1TB SSD, LTE compatible, all bells and whistles. I pulled the trigger and let me say, I couldnt be happier. First off I didn't want the OLED version because the battery trade off isnt worth it to me, but guess what...I'm getting amazing battery life, roughly 6-7hrs, 75% BRIGHTNESS, The fans might kick on for a couple minutes every couple hours while Im running adobe, 10 plus chome windows open, amazon music, youtube, file editing...you name it. The benchmarks are up roughly 30 percent and I've yet to see a core temp above 70! The IR can works like a charm for face recognition, and if youre not familiar with "Glance", it's impressive for the security paranoid..lol. I know if someone is standing behind me 15ft back, the screen blurs right away if that someone comes withing 4 ft, I use 3 external monitors and the cursor follows my eyes/head like a charm to the monitor Im facing..much more. 32GB defenitly speeds things up for Chrome users, since by defalut...it runs over 8gb, and who wouldve guessed I would have an OLED monitor with better battery longevity than my C940 FHD. Long short-- If you can manage to get the top model w/extended warranty($2700), it's worth it. Tech support is second to none. No getting put on hold like the dreadful consumer series support(rather eat a bullet than speak to them), and I can't find one complaint(I like to complain). BTW...in response to tent mode, I use it all the time when I lay down under the comforter and watch movies. Laying the pc on a blanket starves the fans causing excessive temps. Tent mode lets your machine breathe, kind of like stuffing a sock in your mouth or not. I'll be posting a review here as soon as I have a chance. REGARDING THE NIPPLE, THE ONLY ONES I ENJOY ARE ON MY GIRLFREINDS CHEST! Sorry, the is nothing advantageous about the that red rubber waste of space. When I'm really bored, I'll play games with it, like how long does it take to hover over the one drive icon to the start menu, and finally a point on the screen. The epitome of unproductive...lol.

Ive seen a lot of bad reviews regarding the OLED battery life and thermals being sky high, but I wonder what it is like now after almost a year and Id presume BIOS and firmware updates. Are you running Win11 or Win10?

I have a Yoga 7-14ITL5, and the edges are SO sharp, I've had to place gaffers tape on them, b/c they were cutting into my hands (I'm on my PC pretty much all day and night). Is THIS model better on that front? Lenovo and I are trying to work out a deal, and this is one of the models they said I should consider. 2. Maybe it's just the vide, but the keyboard looks about an inch or so more COMPACT than my current model. Would you mind terribly telling me the base and keyboard width? It seemed like the only con about the nipple is that it takes up space, is old and isn’t accurate. But if it doesn’t take up space, and the other reasons don’t seem valid. The warranties are a little more business/client-friendly, tailored to the experience of needing an on-site technician that can actually bring replaceable repair units or something like having drive protection, warranty extensions, etc. They allow you to match your situational needs with their providing options because you bought your hardware from them and they understand that having a business line gives more expandability to people who really need it. There is a big section of the working class that participates in the type of activity that's on-the-go travel, needing to go through tens to hundreds of flights, hotels, cabs, coffee shops, etc. Understanding that these people would feel better about having a company behind them in the cases of emergency is important.
The build quality is typically higher, more concentrated on "what if something breaks?" situations that may need to invoke warranty in the first place if you cannot fix the unit. The metals, plastics, carbon pieces are all pretty honed in. Even coming down to sturdier hinges, drain holes through the machine so liquids can come out and minimally damage the motherboard, sometimes having the modularity of DIY repair with the customer doing the job for themselves instead of needing to call the company, etc. They will provide hardware maintenance manuals for some companies like Lenovo so you have a solid chance of being able to perform a repair for yourself.
Like others said, technologies like vPro and beefed up security features across the layers of the laptop (motherboard firmware, chip-level securities, etc.) are usually not all available in consumer laptops. They often build software apps for the devices as well that are very direct in terms of updating security more in terms of chip microcode, management engine, board firmware, whatever securities they have available in the device (which they know how to identify very well) will probably see updates through that software or through the website once you put in a serial code.
They're very no-BS in terms of design language. Simplicity is lot better than complexity in business-class. Hardly any RGB, being familiar with your designs day in and day out, not many color schemes, just straight and to the point... boringness that clients demand. It seems a little weird that they want that, but it's to eliminate extra hurdles and needing to take time to learn more stuff every year opposed to something that *just works* when you have it.
Sorry for long comment I have a lot of experience with these

Very much personal preference, but as a long standing CAD/ graphics user I have to disagree about thue nipple thing- I hate trackpads & mice- if you want to throw a cursor across four widely spaced corners these feel very very cluncky. Granted trackpads are good for zoom controls. but I fear the day when (after many years) reviewers like you persuade Lenovo to take away my nipple, forcing me to keep the same old ThinkPads until they fall apart.

Please dont kill the nipple Lenovo. To me, as someone who works a lot with terminals, eliminating the need to take my hands of the keyboard is borderline priceless.
Yes, touchpads are more accurate, but its kinda the same deal as with vi(m) and its super unintuitive keybinds.
You can just rest your hands in a comfy typing position, without reaching for function keys or the likes.
I agree however that the dedicated keys could be a whole lot smaller, in favor of a larger touchpad.

I use my x1 yoga gen7 for video editing and gaming with an egpu (rx6600xt) connected via thunderbolt. It is definitely more than just a corporate office computer. Sure I could have gone with the P14s but the build quality on that model is just not there the trackpad is made of mylar and not responsive, the entire body is plastic, the speakers are like an FM radio. Also, as a Linux user the X1 yoga is most compatible compared to any other laptop in the lineup it even has a factory config option to ship with Linux.

So the argument from the nipple lovers is the efficiency/economy of movement of not having to move your hands from the keyboard to navigate.
I legitimately overheard this conversation from BCG consultants, who took this way too seriously. But it's an argument and why they love it

Completely agree with nipple and mouse buttons. Lenovo makes great devices but they need to think this over again. Also, I know ThinkPad logo is what it is, but anyone with any design experience will be bothered as hell with its 45 degree tilt. It is just not visually pleasing thing to see any more.
