Palm rest on the keyboard is way too narrow. At least on the Alienware m16 (also a narrow palm rest) there is no number pad so W, A, S, D aren't pushed as close to the edge and I can rotate my hand so that it barely fits on the palm rest. Please tell Lenovo that this was a really bad idea. I hope the people that buy this and go "wtf" will return it because of this huge design flaw instead of hurting their hand, ergonomic efficiency, or using an external keyboard and sitting 50 feet from the screen
Jarrod, can you make any, any remote sense to me WHY Laptop designers don't just put a couple support pillars under the keyboard which is fully made sturdy and supported with continuity to rubber feet under the laptop to eliminate keyboard flex? Like why do they seriously not do this?
The reason that so many things didn't work in Ubuntu is that the iso was released in October. Developers haven't made proper drivers for the all new Lenovo Legion 9i. You can expect better results in the future.
Yeah, I hope so. Especially since Legions are some of the few laptops to have performance modes and keyboard settings baked into the firmware of the laptops so they work in Linux. Maybe when Ubuntu 24.04 comes out...
Yeah, testing Linux compatibility using just a live CD (USB pendrive) instead of a proper installation isn't optimal in general. More often than not, you need to be able to tweak the installed OS and install more drivers.
I’ve had my 4090 version for a month or so now and it’s been consistently great. I do think you’re right in that most people would be happy with a 7i Pro for less money, but I do love Lenovo’s attention to detail on the 9i
Can't believe you took the motherboard off to show the ram. If I had that beast of a machine, I would never have the guts to open it and change the ram myself! Thumbs up just for that honestly, and great video as usual 👍
Removing a Laptop motherboard isn't as hard as you think. You simply need to take every step slowly and pace yourself. Anyone can do it, just make sure you have something soft and spongy to rest the motherboard on when lifted out of the chassis, instead of a hard surface.
I think the problem with this laptop is that Lenovo kind of shot themselves in the foot by making the Legion 7i laptops such incredible machines. To be honest they didn't need the liquid cooling gimmicks or the carbon fiber lid, all they needed was a Legion 7i with a miniLED screen and maybe the fan setup for a thinner chassis. 😊

@blastofo The Switch is a piece of junk that will age worse than milk left on the kitchen counter. The Steam Deck is good, though some people do want something powerful, although like you said, I would get or build a small desktop if you want something affordable yet powerful. The truth is, desktops will always outperform an "equivalent generation" laptop because of power and thermal constraints. Only the GTX 10 & 16 series and RTX 20 series were even close in terms of performance on desktops and laptops, and only if the laptops received the maximum power. I think something like the Framework Laptop 16 is a good middle ground; a relatively thin and light yet powerful enough, insanely upgradable (for a laptop), and with good battery life. There was a video I watched that basically came to the same conclusion; I would link it here, however, it would probably get marked as spam.
@leahrodriquez1349 Personally, I wouldn't go older than Nvidia RTX 30 series or Radeon RX 6000 series because those did have some notable performance increases compared to their predecessors. Though I would avoid the RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti with 4 GB of vRAM, as those just do not have enough vRAM to play modern games. And if I'm being honest, you could get (or build if you're skilled enough) a small form factor desktop for a lot less money and it would destroy an "equivalently priced or equivalently specced" laptop.
I'm still quite happy with my 7i w/4080 purchase. This thing is really nice and has some features I would love to have on the 7i, but not for the crazy price increase.
I just bought a i7 pro 4090. I love it. I returned my alienware m16 and got the lenovo. Alienware was so bloated with trash software... the lenovo i7 pro was miles ahead of the alienware. And the thermals are amazing. Like low 80s in ultra on cyberpunk rts ultra

7i with 13900 still beating the i9 13980 My 7i has improved greatly with updates since most reviews especially temperature Only the back of the keyboard getting hot without Max fans after time
This looks like the best laptop ever. It has the best distance between the keyboard and the screen which adds more distance between the user and the screen, feels more like a desktop PC and protect users eyes by providing the most possible distance. Full-size Keyboard with no weird change in keys, very standard wrist support (about 8-9CM), perfect temp, hardware, screen, battery, and another extra light charger which makes it even more portable. I wish I had this laptop, I truly wish I could buy it. Gaming laptops have major issues with their low mainboard components quality and their weakness against electric shorts, and noise pulses, gaming laptops die (stop working) all of a sudden which it is scary. I hope instead of doing things to make them fancy, they decide to make them more durable for long-term use.
Yea, especially since the “water cooling loop” is a worthless gimmick they expect us to pay extra for…I understand they spent money developing it but it is fucking useless and nobody should waste their money
That is why Legion 7 materials are downgraded compared to Legion 7 2021. They reuse the chassis of Legion 7 2021 and add some RGB, more cooling, increase the price, and rename it to Legion 9.
@@jeffenad5412 So you are telling me that reusable chassis, little bit more cooling system and some rgb lightning pushes it up to cost 2000 more? Aint no way.
@@ShapeshifterxxI liked it but my unit had a couple build issues. Bottom panel would click when picking it up and the led lights was visible right next to the touch pad. Lenovo was going to build me another one but then it went out of stock and I returned for a refund. I ended up getting the blade 16 oled 4090. I really like the blades oled screen and build but the legion was nice too. It’s louder than the blade but better cooling.
@@gravettian1235 you have to be really close to the screen and really looking for it. It’s nothing huge but I notice the overall better picture of the oled much more. The movement is crystal clear with no issues with faced paced games like the mini led.
Legion Pro 7i with RTX 4080 is still better in my opinion. Easier to upgrade, better keyboard, I like the stealth look more, and better price to performance.
Is it just me or is the Legion 7i 2022 the best design they had? They definitely need to have in built base raise for better air flow but other than that, it's so well made.
That was the peak gaming laptop. Understated yet premium, and with a ton of great features to boot. They will never surpass that laptop if they keep this crap up.
@@cameronbosch1213 Yeah I don't know why they changed that. Everything about that design (aside from it being low resting. They really should've made higher base nubs for airflow) was well thought out and so clean and sleek. Like why change something unbroken.
@ShinobiNerro13 Exactly. It was rather attractive without being too flashy like the Alienware laptops are. Oh well, they won't be getting my money this year. I just hope that Framework can get me the Framework Laptop 16 without delaying it into the new year. (I'm on batch 1, and it keeps running into delays...)
@@cameronbosch1213 Framework is interesting but it gives me the project Ara vibe right now. I want the project to actually start being commercially viable before I jump into the "future of laptops".
@@ShinobiNerro13 Except it also has other features that no other laptop has, like being AMD Advantage, having good Linux support, and a 16 : 10 2560x1600 screen. Finding another laptop with ALL of these this year has been impossible.
With the 14th gen inbound. I hope the Legion 9 and 7 pro receive some tweeks. Legion 9 needs its limiters removed, because thermals are good. The same can be said about that useless water pump that adds complications and cost (imagine a Vapor chamber in place with the super thick heat pipe). Legion 7 Pro needs the same mini led option back (which was listed until removed) and a fucking glass touchpad. Maybe switch the metal bottom cover to the keyboard deck like MSI does and have a plastic bottom cover instead. Giving it a bit more premium? Thats all that is needed and both laptops would be a steal compared to anything else. I’m definitely sold on the keyboard and nothing imo feels as good as on a Legion or Pro Lenovo laptop. The only thing better is the cherry MX low profile but that is a different thing.
The Legion 7 late 2021 design was the best and the price was fair, Best RGB, Great slick design, 16 inch 1440p Screen, Pretty quiet during gaming compared to other laptops, Etc'....
I was dreaming of buying the i9 ( if I was rich) but I'm proud of my g16 4060, I won't be buying a laptop in 1-2 years but I still love watching your videos. Laptops are awesome!
My MSI GS65 has it. It sucks. Makes every bit of maintenance and upgrades a long chore that takes way too long. Won't be upgrading to this model for sure.
The best gaming laptop for me, returned my Dell R2 M16 and R2 M18 laptops due to slow response and blue screen issues. Lenovo Legion i9 works perfectly and is fast, Fingerprint scanner works with windows Hello fine. Lenovo will work with you to get the best possible deal, my fully loaded Legion i9 cost 3114.
Finally the Legion 9i, I thought you weren't going to get around to this great laptop! It is obscenely expensive though, despite excellent performance.
We weren't sure we would be covering it either! Have been trying to get a hold of it for months. Unfortunately, it came in just a bit too late to be included in all the end of year stuff.
I think 2 Type A ports a the back should be minimum as gamers like me always have their mouse and external keyboards connected. And connecting them to the side port makes for a messy look.
Been waiting this review from Mr Jarrod, i thought he forgot that lenovo has added a higher tier laptop than legion 7, or just it's that Mr Jarrod's thing (he wholeheartedly review any laptop so it will take time)
We've been asking about it for months. Pestering Lenovo about when we'll get it. Unfortunately, it arrived a little bit too late to be included in all the end of year videos.
The small trackpad killed it for me. Had to return it. Was really looking for a replacement to the gt77 since it’s so big! But it’s still my favorite laptop this year.
It would have been nice if they pushed the keyboard up just half an inch. It would allow the trackpad to be a more normal size, and still leave a ton of ventilation that doesn't block the fans. I always use a mouse so ultimately its not a big deal for me. I'm enjoying mine.
Unless a laptop has a truly excellent trackpad (e.g., Macbook Pro), I'll use a mouse for even standard productivity tasks. I'd just disable the trackpad on the 9i. My big concern with the 9i would be whether my palms are comfortable while typing.
@@Shapeshifterxx There's only a few things I don't like: The fans are loud even with moderate load. They are okay in quiet mode with a light load though. Another is the keyboard LEDs; they don't display intermediate colors well. For instance if you want a white keyboard, it actually looks like a weird muddy red-green-blue blend. It's not mixed or diffused very well. The speakers sounded bad out of the box, but disabling Nahemic fixed it. They sound quite good for a laptop now. The Lenovo Vantage software is buggy, had to replace it with Legion Toolkit which works great. I also wish it had one more USB-A port. Otherwise I love it, especially the screen and build quality.
I was looking at buying a Legion 9i. But i recently went with the Eluktronics Prometheus with the external water cooler/pump. 4080, 32GB DDR5, 1 TB NVME, 500 NIT 240hz screen... i got it on Amazon for $1999 a couple weeks ago. The water pump was DOA, i called tech support and someone answered the phone in 30 seconds. Had me do a small test and told me to ship it back and they would send a new one.
Vantage seems really decent , why do people seem to delete it ? I'm really considering buying a legion soon so I'm just making sure to know almost everything about it
Very helpful video. With the keyboard temps, I noticed the word warm a lot, but was it uncomfortable to use? I don't mind a warm keyboard, but I'm concerned if it gets hot or very uncomfortable if I'll be forced to use a wireless keyboard for longer gaming sessions.

At the top of the review (and towards the end) (review detailed and in-depth, as always - kudos), you mentioned the near-competition with the Razer; have you had the opportunity to play with the Asus Zephyrus Duo 16 (2023 model)? There are enough similarities (and differences) that it would make a damned interesting comparo-review (plus, I'd just love to hear your opinion on both). Same/similar: RTX4090 (mobile) at 175w, 16-inch mini-LED screen, HDR1000+, 16:10 screen ratio, similar pricing. Interesting differences: Ryzen 7945HX, slightly lower resolution (2560 x 1600), higher refresh rate, easier RAM access.
@@JarrodsTech Dammit; that's a shame. I'm strongly considering the Zephyrus over the Legion - despite the few downgrades. But it's all window-shopping at this stage.
thank you for the review. I have been waiting for it. and now I have an solid idea about bying the legion 9i... I knew about the liquid cooling joke but now I am more disapointed about the performance in lower resolutions well if it's not below 3500€ I probably will not pull the trigger
Jarrod I can't help thinking that Legion 9 might perform a lot better with Ryzen 9 7945X3D because of that TDP issue in crossloads. Obviously the price of Legion 9 is too high for average user but I think power users would like to have Ryzen option too.
Hey Jarrod, excellent review! In both of the units that I received, I had this problem where disallowing the Mediatek WiFi drivers to wake up the computer from sleep causes the laptop to consistently crash when waking up from sleep. However, without making that change, the laptop will wake up from sleep randomly causing it to run extremely hot and draining the battery while in a backpack! I've opened a ticket with Lenovo about this and they're working to get it resolved. Can you confirm whether turning that setting off causes crashing in your unit? Also, changing the mode to performance on Vantage changes the indicator on my unit. So, that might only be an issue with some units.
Thanks! We did not experience that, but unfortunately we don't sleep the laptops all that much during testing, perhaps we need some sort of over night sleep test where we see how much battery drained / did it not wake up, not sure.
@@JarrodsTech Thank you for responding. It probably won't be worth doing for you post review but if you have some sway over Lenovo people, informing them of this might be of huge help to many users as it a major bug. The people handling my ticket have asked me to reset Windows to see if that fixes it.
Sleep is broken in Windows 11. Put the laptop into hibernate when you shut the lid instead. This might be annoying on an old slow laptop, but on a 9i? Lol. Might be an extra 3-5 seconds of wakeup time?
Hello! I wanted to ask for advice on choosing a laptop, the problem is that one of the options is not presented in the reviews. We are talking about asus tuf gaming f17 FX707VV (13900H and 4060), and the second option is the classic legion 5 pro with 6800H and 3060. The prices are approximately the same: $1200 versus $1150. I also suddenly came across a third option: ASUS ROG Strix G513 R7 6800H/RTX3060 for +- 900-1000$ The priority is the size and color rendering quality of the display, as well as relevance for playing modern heavy single-player titles at high settings, and of course you want it to be reliable 2023 years' TUF specs looks tastier than Lega for the same price, but tuf 22 years old laptops were problematic, it’s unclear how things are now: I haven’t found a review of this model, just a few reviews.
What can I say, one more time, impressive review, fine running detail, every single downside exposed. Jarrod, your work is pure gold. When I notice about Lenovo Legion 9, I disagree with screen resolution, and with up to 64gb of ram as maximum ram. But now, there are more things I reject. Ram in the other side of the motherboard, weird position of the keyboard... That awful performance in cyberpunk for CPU+GPU power limits... I'm gonna really miss Clevo old flagships machines and their philosophy.
This is so expensive but it not reaching 80 degrees with maxed out specs is really impressive considering a lot of pc gpus are at lower 70s at max use its pretty comparable compared to the 90+ degrees in a lot of other laptops
22:40 i noticed i some games such as Apex or Cyberpunk , when i'm playing in lower resolution such as 1080p , i get really bad fps and bad cpu - gpu utilization. I did some digging with RTSS and what i found out is that sometimes i need to unplug - replug my charger for my legion pro 7i to be able to use max cpu - gpu power. this makes my fps better instantly. I don't know why this is a thing but it is definitely real , more people should test it to confirm. i don't know if it's the same on legion 9i
Thank you for your video really appreciated . You didn't say that the lquid cooling is a gimmick like Dave2D said tho . Nice Amon Amarth T-shirt . Hope you review Asus ROG Scar 16 , it's not exactly like the G16 !
Here’s the comparison vid to do - Legion 9i vs. 7i, both with 4090. I mean, I know the outcome. Performance 97% the same, so it isn’t worth it unless you’re dying for that mini-LED screen. But still, a detailed video would be really interesting.
I felt so catfished seeing an add for a 'liquid cooled' Legion the first time. I really don't understand why they went half way to blowing the Neo out of the water but just stopped at quick disconnects...
I hope this laptop's 2024 version fixes all the problems of its predeseccor, like screen etc. Lenovo should also increase its performance in games like cyberpunk.
The matte material will eventually become gross and sticky in the future. I have the Dell Inspiron 7567 and it's matte material is deteriorating very quickly.
Contrast 1:1 :D. I hope we keep exploring the liquid internal systems. Years ago I saw an LG laptop with a liquid cooling internal solution that kept the laptop cool while all other laptops at the time were very hot. (thou I do not understand why its on the memory and not the CPU/GPU).
Thank you so much🍻, was wondering if you have digged deeper running linux over this beast? am thinking about it bur can't find enough answers, specially the finger print, does it work?
I want to say thank you Jarrod's tech for including the Linux compatibility👏🏽 . Lenovo's Linux support seems to be going downhill fast -- they're gently guiding us to the door. Compare this to the Y540 just a few years ago where everything just worked out the box. My ThinkPad E14 won't even let me enable legacy boot. PureOS doesn't boot, and I'm not sure if any FSF-approved distros are compatible. I had to settle for Ubuntu with non-free addons. Dealing with these compatibility hurdles really stinks, especially when they seem intentionally anticompetitive.
Exactly. The 2022 Legion 7i could have just had minor tweaks and a spec bump and been released as the Legion 9i. That would have been extremely good. But instead, they pushed a weird hybrid Zephyrus keyboard shifted down and Lenovo Legion Slim & Pro combination that doesn't work.
Do you review smaller brands? Would be interesting to see one of very few full AMD laptops: "TUXEDO Sirius 16 - Gen1" with Ryzen 7840HS + Radeon RX 7600M XT.
The problem for some users: 1. It doesn't have ANSI keyboard layouts. That's fine for most EU & UK users, but Australian and North American users are screwed. 2. 16 : 9 needs to die on laptops. I would never buy another 16 : 9 laptop. 3. Tuxedo is a fortune to get shipped outside of the EU.

Why don't you undervolt and overclock the CPUs? It is a part of their nature, and avoiding it may lead to an unfair comparison. For example, I got a 30,500 MC score in Cinebench in 10 minutes with an air-cooled 13900hx (Mechrevo).
Hi Jarrod, I've seen a lot of your videos and you are amazing!!! I have a technical question for you and probably you know the answer, I bought a MSI GE76 1 year ago and it started to be uneven or is not flat anymore, everytime I open the lid the base woobles and if I use the ESC or enter I can feel the uneven base, I have used the warranty and they had changed twice the covers but the problem is still there, what experience dou you have with this problem?
That laptop with both chargers weigh less than just my laptop. My Alienware area 51-M R1 weighs about 8-10 pounds on its own and then has a massive 330 w and massive 280 w charger. The supposed liquid cooling in this is a gimmick in my opinion, however watched a video on this yesterday where this laptop was directly compared to a Razer Blade 16 and the Blade 16 is not worth 700.00 more than this laptop. The screen was just as color accurate as the Blade 16 and out-performed the Blade 16 in every game tested and almost all other tests. IMHO, neither this or the Blade 16 are worth the price.
Interesting it only gets 26671 in Cinebench while 13900HX in Legion 7i Pro can hit 28800 without touching anything and hit over 30k with light undervolting. Where the performance goes. It maybe is a bug, drivers, bios etc. No way this higher tier CPU performs visibly worse. Or they screwed up TDP so much for not really important weight loss, which is minor.
Hey Jarrod. Just one request. Recently my Asus scar 16 I913980 Hx is giving same cinebench score as the Legion 9i in your video. Is there a sudden drop in the cinebench score for I913980HX. Only the back of the keyboard getting hot without Max fans after time
This looks like the best laptop ever.
4400$ is crazy, it definitely doesn't deserve such cost
Yea, especially since the “water cooling loop” is a worthless gimmick they expect us to pay extra for…I understand they spent money developing it but it is fucking useless and nobody should waste their money
That is why Legion 7 materials are downgraded compared to Legion 7 2021. They reuse the chassis of Legion 7 2021 and add some RGB, more cooling, increase the price, and rename it to Legion 9.
@@jeffenad5412 I don't think its the same chassis
@VikVaughan I know, but the materials from Legion 7 2021 are the same. They downgraded the Legion 7 for more plastic and less RGB.
@@jeffenad5412 So you are telling me that reusable chassis, little bit more cooling system and some rgb lightning pushes it up to cost 2000 more? Aint no way.

How do you like it thinking about getting one
@@ShapeshifterxxI liked it but my unit had a couple build issues. Bottom panel would click when picking it up and the led lights was visible right next to the touch pad. Lenovo was going to build me another one but then it went out of stock and I returned for a refund. I ended up getting the blade 16 oled 4090. I really like the blades oled screen and build but the legion was nice too. It’s louder than the blade but better cooling.

How much did you notice the downgrade from the 3200x2000 screen on the 9i to the 2560x1600 screen on the Blade?
@@gravettian1235 you have to be really close to the screen and really looking for it. It’s nothing huge but I notice the overall better picture of the oled much more. The movement is crystal clear with no issues with faced paced games like the mini led.

Just got my Pro 7i at bargain price as well. It feels that the extra, but not fully featured bling-bling, is far from worth the price diff.

I have been watching this channel for 4+ years and you have never disappointed when producing content, keep it up!👍
Legion Pro 7i with RTX 4080 is still better in my opinion.

After watching the whole video, I have to admit that it is a disappointing Legion 9i.

@@JarrodsTechhow would this rate on your best laptops of the year? I had the 7i 4090 and sold it. I ordered the 4090 9i for the mini led screen.

Been waiting this review from Mr Jarrod, i thought he forgot that lenovo has added a higher tier laptop than legion 7, or just it's that Mr Jarrod's thing (he wholeheartedly review any laptop so it will take time)
It just took a long time to get to AU.
@@VikVaughanwhat don't you like about it
@@Shapeshifterxx There's only a few things I don't like:
The fans are loud even with moderate load.
This would have been great if it was an 18” screen
The microstutter on these things are absurd due to the high DPC latency
is this software fixable? In what application is it noticeable?

Hey @@jeremyberman8204, thanks for telling me about this. I ended up returning the laptop though.
I also suddenly came across a third option: ASUS ROG Strix G513 R7 6800H/RTX3060 for +- 900-1000$
The priority is the size and color rendering quality of the display, as well as relevance for playing modern heavy single-player titles at high settings, and of course you want it to be reliable
2023 years' TUF specs looks tastier than Lega for the same price, but tuf 22 years old laptops were problematic, it’s unclear how things are now: I haven’t found a review of this model, just a few reviews.
This looks great, but i bought a Legion 7i 4080 a couple of months ago, and the fancier extras of the 9i wouldn't sway my decision.
This is so expensive but it not reaching 80 degrees with maxed out specs is really impressive considering a lot of pc gpus are at lower 70s at max use its pretty comparable compared to the 90+ degrees in a lot of other laptops

i noticed i some games such as Apex or Cyberpunk , when i'm playing in lower resolution such as 1080p , i get really bad fps and bad cpu - gpu utilization.

Here’s the comparison vid to do - Legion 9i vs. 7i, both with 4090.
I mean, I know the outcome. Performance 97% the same, so it isn’t worth it unless you’re dying for that mini-LED screen. But still, a detailed video would be really interesting.
Plz make a video on how to test a used second hand gaming laptop before buying
I felt so catfished seeing an add for a 'liquid cooled' Legion the first time. I really don't understand why they went half way to blowing the Neo out of the water but just stopped at quick disconnects...
I hope this laptop's 2024 version fixes all the problems of its predeseccor, like screen etc. Lenovo should also increase its performance in games like cyberpunk.
The matte material will eventually become gross and sticky in the future. I have the Dell Inspiron 7567 and it's matte material is deteriorating very quickly.

Yeah, Lenovo has been going the wrong direction this year. I settled for waiting for a Framework Laptop 16.
The keyboard layout looks weird
@JarrodsTech - Curious why you use the Thermaltake cooler to test your laptops instead of the IETS500 or IETS600?
Sad to see how lenovo tried to fix what wasn't broken.
The problem for some users:
