Inkscape - Create a Vector (Black and White)

- If you have a blurry black and white image, Inkscape can help. Here's a quick tutorial for beginners on how to trace an image and create the vector (and svg file). I also cover how to export the file as an image.
Inkscape is a completely free vector software tool that is like Adobe Illustrator.

Great tutorial. Thanks for the info. about single scans or multiple scans - depending on coloured images. Just one tip, if you look at the very bottom of the screen, below the colour bar, and below the scroll bar, you'll see that it will tell you if what you've selected is an IMAGE or a PATH (path = trace/vector). Thanks. Also, if you click on the padlock icon located between the H and W options, that constrains the proportions, so you don't need to hold down the CTRL key to size it up or down.

Awesome, thanks! Having seem some of your other videos about cleaning up SVGs and preparing them for sale, would you advise reducing the number of nodes on this particular example (if you wanted to sell it as a SVG) before uploading it for sale? My understanding of saleable SVGs is to keep the number of nodes as low as practically possible for ease of use for cutting machines.
Yes you are exactly right - if the SVG has a million nodes, it will look great but take way too long if someone wants to use the SVG as a cut file (because the machine reads each node). So you want the minimum number of nodes while having the design still look good!
Awesome! But I’m confused about saving as png. Can it be saved as svg for laser engraving or will the png keep the nodes too?
Great question - no a PNG will be an image (and only an image). You want to save it as an SVG file if you are using a cutting machine like a Cricut for example.
I've had some good success with using Inkscape thanks to your videos but I have a question if I may; I'm trying to make some svg files for printing on t shirts, sweatshirts etc. I want to be able to sell the files so that someone can print on a white item of clothing or a colored item so I also have to use the images in white. But I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make the vector on my white png images in Inkscape. Is that not possible?

I had watched this video before and lost the link. I took a snapshot of a picture I drew and wanted to create a vector but I couldn’t get it to work. Is it not possible to use my own picture of a drawing or am I doing something wrong? I plan to try it again today.
Sometimes if you don't have the picture selected, that can be the problem. So make sure that the picture is selected (you will see a dotted box around it) and then Trace Bitmap.

you have more than one channel? huh, shouldn't have been surprised. lol on a related note, Photo editing is hard!!! I watch tutorials and nothing seems to be in the spot as the tutorial. Been looking into line drawing but I still haven't grasped how it's done. Other channels be like We're going to go to the shape dropdown and choose ellipsis and I'm like where the hell is the shape drop down??? LOL

i seem to be the only person having a problem with this everytime i get to exporting the image it still comes out blurry and pixilated ....can anyone explain lol
Hey there - have you actually traced the bitmap first? If you create an svg layer (like if you trace the bitmap) - you should have a clear image?
