  • Hey everyone! Today I am going thru all the steps to create an svg, or digital file to use for Cricut, Silhouette, and other cutting machines. This is part one in a two-part series on How To Create and Sell SVGs on Etsy. I use svgs everyday to create the signs, stickers, and decals I make and sell. I am in the process of opening up an svg, or digital art, shop on Etsy, so I thought you guys might be interested to see the process, and how to open your own shop!
    In today's Part 1 video, I will show you how I create SVG and PNG files to sell. I use Inkscape in this video to create these files. If you are not familiar with Inkscape, you can download it free online. I have some other tutorials on Inkscape here: • Tutorials .
    Hope you all enjoy creating and practicing making svgs. I will post Part 2: How To Open an Etsy Shop / Selling SVGs on Monday so look for that video!!!

    I FIGURED IT OUT!!! LOL When you said to do path and object to path and that it turns it into a vector, that is what worked for me!! Thank you! Then you save it as a PLAIN SVG!! then go to your Cricut and upload the file! Make sure the file is not too large. I had to adjust my size before I saved it.

    Wonderful tutorial and great explanations! So many YT videos only talk about tracing bitmaps in Inkscape or just all the things the program can do. That's fine, but knowing the few "final" steps to prepare the SVG for DesignSpace is exactly what I needed! Thanks so much. Happy to be a new subscriber.

    Love this tutorial it was so easy to follow and showed me a lot of things I didn’t know. I am stumped however though because no matter what I do it still says text elements are not supported when uploaded to Cricut. I have made the text a path, ungrouped it, unionized the text, cut off all of the strokes…. Nothing seems to work!

    I have been wanting to learn how to use Inkscape for so long but it has always looked intimidating. You did a great job at explaining everything. When you make this specific SVG with the different colors, does it automatically save each one of them as a separate layer so it can be cut the same as the image? Or will this make one singular color cut file?

    Christy, found this very helpful, as I, like most, are struggling to understand Inkscape and working with svgs. I would like to also offer dxf and eps formats. Heard that there might be issues especially for the Silhouette Basic users. Can you share how you would Export in these formats as well? I feel that my svg design knowledge is so limited that I might not be considering something when trying to save and not knowing if the file would open correctly for the user. Thanks so much for all your informative tuts.

    Hi Christy,
    I have made digital products, but not SVG's. Is there a specific size to make them for different products? For example, do I need to make designs of different sizes for t-shirts vs signs etc.? I am thinking that because SVG's are scalable, creating them the same size for any product is fine because the customer will scale them to their own desired size. Is that correct?

    came across your tutorial and love it but when using that tracing tool how do you get smooth lines? Mine when tracing is always choppy

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  2 роки тому +2

      Hi! At the top of the screen under "File" you will see "Mode:". Beside that there are some icons..the first one is an arc with dots on it. This is regular mode that makes straight lines between clicks. The second one looks like a spiral and that creates a spiral path. The third one looks like an arc inside two lines that meet at a corner which creates a Bspline path. That is the mode I use to create the smooth lines. You can try these out to see how each one looks to get a better idea. Hope that helps!

    I know this video was posted a while ago so not sure if you will see this or not but I had a question. After I changed the text to a path and exported as an SVG, saved file, I tried it in Design Space to make sure it worked and it states that there are text elements that are not supported. Will this happen if I upload the SVG to Etsy and someone purchases it and tries to upload into Design Space?

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  2 роки тому +3

      Hi! Yes it will upload with unsupported elements for them as well. Go back to your Inkscape document and check for any images or text that are not changed to paths. Click on the nodes tool on the top left of the screen, then click on each image or element on your canvas...if you see the nodes show up then your element is a path. If no nodes appear when you click on it, you will need to change it to a path. Be sure and change any lines you draw from stroke to path,, and make sure all of the strokes are turned off in Fill and Stroke.. Also zoom out and check for any unwanted elements you may have forgot to erase before you saved. Hope that makes sense and helps!

    Hi! Thank you for sharing your tutorial: I actually think I might be able to do this!! At the end of the video, I noticed the truck still had the white sections (window, trim, shine, etc) that were removed earlier in the video?? Is this a print and cut image?? Or a cut image?? Thanks so much

    • @AppalachianHomeCo
      @AppalachianHomeCo  2 роки тому +2

      Hi! So glad this helped! I hope this makes sense but before I removed those windows and parts I made a copy of the original silhouette before removing the windows and things. I use the original silhouette with no cut outs, change the color to white, and place it under or behind the green truck to make the windows stand out, and the customers have a full silhouette to work with if need be. So you could use this both ways, as print then cut, and as a cut file. I should have mentioned the video lol!

    • @AppalachianHomeCo

      Hi! You will want to weld your image together before saving it as an svg in Inkscape. Select the parts of the image you do not want editable, go to path, then select union. They will be welded together and uneditable in Cricut or any other cutting software. 👍

      Hi! Usually pics from the web do not allow to be copied to use for selling items. Check to see which site they are from...sometimes you can find royalty free images that you can use for designs on your products. Also, to watermark the image I place my logo over the image in several different places and bring down the opacity of the logo to around 10-20 percent to make it less visible. I usually do that in Inkscape or Canva.

    Way too hard to follow. The bezier tool you mention is not even called a bezier tool - it's actually labeled Pen tool. Then you go to the top and say "I chose this option" without telling us which option you chose. I could not see what you chose because the title of the video was over your selection. I had to keep stopping the video and zooming in to try and figure out what you were talking about. Nope.
