  • Inkscape’s Trace Bitmap function makes creating a vector portrait from a photo quick and simple. In this video I’ll show you how to get the effect you want, I’ll cover how to smooth the contour of your tracings with a simple trick and I’ll show you how to trace different elements of your photo separately to ensure you get the colours you are looking for.
When converting a photo to a vector portrait in Inkscape, there are numerous controls you can use to get the look you want, but sometimes you need to know some additional tricks: I’ll be demonstrating how to use the Bezier tool and clipping to isolate sections of your image, I show how you can make Trace Bitmap only look at the part of the image that you want to be traced, using Make a Bitmap Copy.
In addition to creating a vector portrait, I show you how to set up your workspace so that your Command Bar is at the top like mine and how to set the resolution of the Make Bitmap Copy function.
In this tutorial, I’m using the latest version of Inkscape - Inkscape 1.2.2

Your welcome. It can be frustrating when the colours look washed out so this is a simple fix.

I have also found that if one runs the bitmap through a ai image digital art/anime upscaler, then import the upscaled and animed bitmap into inkscape, the trace results are excellent due to all the smoothing being done by the ai upscaler

Which AI software are you using? I did give Blue willow a try, it is amazing what a few prompts can produce.

Really good tutorial. Thank you! When I make the bitmap copy the preview image is much better quality than the final after hitting apply. What is the reason for that? Thank you!

When you create a bitmap copy, it is created with a set resolution, the default is 96dpi, so depending on the size of your image and how zoomed in you are, the quality may drop. You can change the resolution by going to: Edit - Preferences - Imported images. In there you will find 'Resolution of Create bitmap copy' where you can increase the dpi to suit.

I'm currently using a Snowball Ice desktop mic which does record with a very low volume. By the time I've ramped up the volume the sound is distorted - think I will have to invest in a better sound set up sometime soon.
