    My jaw dropping moment: Tree trunk Castle. Wow! GORGEOUS and clever. Haha Orios. Oh Dara you do make me laugh. The dutch name for that breed cow is Lakenvelders. Laken=sheet, veld-field. When I looked it up it said: Lakenvelders=Dutch Belted! I learned something new. That white patch so looks like a white sheet draped over the cow. I'm afraid I'll now see Orios. 😂😂😂😂😂😂! I'm ever so grateful for my Covid free travel moments in the Cotswolds. Always a treasured moment while enjoying a lovely coffee. Thank you for my moment. 💖 🙏 🇳🇱 🙋‍♀️🇳🇿

      You are so sweet, Anita! Thanks for your comment. The "Oreo cows" as I call them are actually a Scottish breed called Belted Galloway. I first saw them several years ago and have been a big fan ever since!
      The tree trunk castle was very interesting... tucked into a delightful woodland walk. That's why Rococo Gardens are unique, as they are a crazy ramble full of intriguing little discoveries!

    This video is a great advertisement for the concept of 'Slow Travel' where you spend extended time in an area and savour all that it has to offer. It's lovely to see all these places that aren't on the main Cottswold Tourist trail.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much for saying that. I do REALLY love the concept of slow travel. And our summer was a combination of slow travel and insanely fast travel, to be honest! We were fortunate to spend months in Cheltenham, on the border of our beloved Cotswolds. BUT... when we went on our "Northern Expedition" we also had the other end of the spectrum. For example, 4 hours to tour Edinburgh! As you can tell from that vlog, we were very rushed, and I wished we had much more time there! Thanks so much for your comment! Cheers! XX Dara

      @@MagentaOtterTravels Slow travel is something that I've learnt to do especially in the UK. We (well realistically I!) choose an area to spend time in, I just explore small sections rather than checking off every tourist site in the UK. I did that as a young backpacker with my 7 day Britrail pass where I travelled as far north as Aberdeen seeing more eastern towns, then across to Glasgow and down seeing more western towns. I can't say I remember all that much about the trip except for the trains!

Always drive at a speed at which you can stop in the distance you can see to be clear even if a local idiot is pushing you along from behind. Be prepared to reverse into a passing place and wave at each other as you pass. Cardinal rule: drive slowly.

    I am running out of superlatives, Ian, Dara, your videos enrich my day. Regarding yew trees in churchyards I thought that in some cases Christianity appropriated places that were sacred to the pagans. As you know, some yews can live for up to 3000 years so I find them particularly special. To think that these places/ trees have been venerated in different ways for an awfully long time. I even planted a small yew hedge at the front of my house, it should last, lol.

    • @ians3586
      @ians3586 2 роки тому

      Yes, that's what I'd heard too, that there was some pagan meaning to the yew and that Christianity appropriated pagan places of worship. I love the idea that both plants and buildings can be enjoyed by many generations of people. Even though they aren't native to the UK, it's good to see so many coastal redwoods and sequoias that have been planted there, knowing that the trees could be enjoyed by people 2000 years from now. Evidently, the UK climate is perfect for them and, with climate change, the native California environment (where I grew up) is becoming less and less hospitable to these trees.

    The legend of the Yew Trees is that each tree in the graveyard has its roots in the mouth of a corpse. At the end of the summer is the Clypping Ceremony where the Church of England lets its hair down and lifts up its skirts to show its knickers. The Church is celebrated with hymns, parades and a dance around the Church not unlike the Hokey-Cokey. Parishoners and Clergy wear flowers in their hair and the sermon, such as it is, would do credit to the Comedy Store. The church becomes pet-friendly. The town also runs the Apple Faire and you can buy Puppy-Dog Pies (actually beef pies - probably).
