A Breathtaking Walk in a Cotswold Village with Dramatic Views

- So, today we are out and about walking in the small Cotswold village of Sheepscombe which is located approximately 10 km (6.5 miles) south-east of the city of Gloucester, 10 km (6 miles) north-east of Stroud and just 2 km (1.5 miles) east of Painswick. The village is situated in a narrow valley.
The village is thought to date back to around 1260 with its original name being Sebbescumbe. Like many Cotswold villages and towns, Sheepscombe was involved in the cloth making trade in the 17th century. Its very last mill closed in 1839.
The village church is St John the Baptist which was constructed and opened in 1820. It was later expanded in 1872. It is listed as being a Grade II building.
The village local is The Butchers Arms, which is a Free House. The pub has a very popular outdoor sign, which is a chap sat down, sipping a pint but also with a pig tied to his leg. It is said to be one of the most photographed pub signs in the country. It is also worth noting that the pub warmly welcomes walkers & ramblers alike (as well as your four legged friend), in fact the pub staff have even come up with six comprehensive circular walks, a copy of the leaflet containing the walks can be obtained at the bar. So, if you are in the area, why not call in to The Butchers Arms for some nice refreshments and good food.

Are in the Butchers Arms many years ago. Village still magical.
Sheepscombe is a sweet and peaceful village.
The countryside is beautiful and the church has lots of character.
We want to stop at the Butchers Arms which seems very nice.
His seated man with a pig tied to his foot is a truly original sign and must be very old.

Though I noticed that I did not leave a comment at the time this was posted, I have to say that this was my favorite walk of all time (though I do love each one). I deliberately hunted it up today (was the fifth one I tried as I scrolled through many…had remembered that it began with a church bell ringing) as my husband had an ambulatory surgery today and I was looking for a pleasant, peaceful video to watch while in the surgical waiting room. I find it hard to concentrate on books or letter writing in such situations- but this was a perfect way to calmly pass time and enjoy the beauty of Sheepscombe.

I haven't been here for a couple of years and it's beautiful to see it again. There are so many amazing villages around Stroud and seeing this film made me want to go back and revisit the area. That sense of elevation. I suspect that when we hit the more Autumnal weather when I think the countryside is at its most majestic, I will be revisiting as many places as I possibly can. Thanks for a beautiful video, paced and shot to perfection as I have come to expect from this channel, that reminds me of one of those places that otherwise might have slipped my mind. I'm arriving at that point in life where I have a little more time to devote to life's more passive pleasures and so, as always, thanks for your work.

Artful opening with 6am church bells, Sir🕶️, resplendent church-scape, her tower quite ornate. I'll slip me arm into yorn and enjoy this walk. But'cha knows what's missing? Croaks of frogs and leg-violins of crickets and all manner of such things. Boy howdy, here, after a good rain, I've counted 4-5 different frog tribes, some pig snort, some laugh, some sing without breathing...and crickets so loud ifn there's one outside a window you find yourself digging in closets and moving furniture to find the little darling. Where be ya'll's? I'm cursed with "mother's ear" and a single 🦟 on a far wall can wake me up. No wonder it's so pleasant and folks well rested in Cotswold. The little blue doggy bowl at Butcher's Arms says it all; that and the cute birds at the closing, so sweet and cheerful. I'll give you your arm back so's ya can study on where to go next. So appreciative for the constitutional today. Might we have so many more?
Good day, Jaclyn. I was wondering earlier where we might be taking our "Constitutional" today (but didn't want to spoil the surprise by looking back down the list). Talk about perfect timing with the 6am bell tolls :). I have not seen a frog in years nor heard a cricket in ages either. There were a few ancient buildings on show, but fewer than usual with a lot of 'new builds,' so if ancient buildings are what float your boat, as it does mine, then other walks will be preferable...........
Personally for me...the older the buildings / houses are then all the better.
