I used to pass through Broadway quite regularly, when heading back north - heading for the motorway junction at Worcester, when I was working at RAF Brize Norton. The Broadway hill with its bends is quite an interesting drive!! Did you get to look around Evesham? Quite a nice town, just a few miles from Broadway. Also Burford just over the county border in Oxfordshire?
We have been to Burford many times... we always take American visitors there. I will EVENTUALLY post a vlog of a delightful afternoon we spent there at the end of this past summer. As for Evesham... haven't been there in years. But it is close to Cheltenham, so we need to go!
We have been to Evesham but it's been many years. I agree it is a nice place (but not quite as interesting as Knaresborough!). Burford is one of our favourite Cotswold towns. It's usually where we first bring visitors from the US because it's the closest place in the Cotswolds to Heathrow airport and it never fails to please.
Hahah I know, when I heard that there's a place called Broadway in England, I couldn't believe. Very very different to the one in the US and one of our fave places.
I also have a new 'favourite' village, region, town, museum etc every time I visit the UK! I think that's why I like having a really vague itinerary, so I can enjoy new places and add them to the favourites list. Plus I still like getting surprised with finding places I hadn't heard off but have been recommended by locals or people we meet on our travels.
I agree 100%!!! That is the fun of travel... wandering around meeting lovely people wherever you go, and discovering amazing out of the way places that are just fascinating! Unfortunately I filmed too much content and I can't keep up with editing and sharing it all!!
Wonderful, wonderful video. As you are filming some close up views of some fabulous private properties, do you ever encounter any frostiness from any of the owners who may object? Incidentally, although you pay to park on the main car park behind the high street, use of the loos is actually free.
Thanks for correcting me! I thought they were pay toilets... but I was hoping I wasn't lying, since I only edited this week and didn't confirm my information. No question that the "loos with views" are nicer than the carpark toilets, though ;-) I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I actually filmed the homes from a pretty good distance. I have a wide angle lens and I zoom into the image in post, so I might look closer than I am. I do HATE nosey tourists that go around small Cotswold villages peering into people's windows!!! As for Broadway, it seemed that quite a lot of the residential buildings on the upper High Street were actually holiday homes. We were there around 10am as everyone was leaving their AirBnB's and packing up their cars to drive away. Have a great weekend. Cheers! XX Dara
We haven't actually been to Broadway, although upon watching your video, I really think we should! 🙀🙀 I think the next sunny weekend we have, we'll drive up and head immediately to the tea rooms!! I'm loving the matching rain coats! Haha! The tower looks incredible and a must visit when you're in the village! 😻😻
The deli used to be a toy shop when I was little - it seemed a huge shop then, but in recent times I've returned it doesn't seem quite so big! Also the road through the middle used to be really busy when I was little before they built a bypass road.
So funny that you mention the deli, because we just ate there yesterday! Lol Yes, I know what you mean. I went back to my elementary school as an adult and marveled at how tiny everything was, but it looked so big when I was a small child! I think Broadway deli is a great shop and restaurant. Funny that it used to be a toy store. Now it looks like there's a great toy store in the place that used to be the post office! I didn't realize they built a bypass road, but that is very helpful!
In London there were many Broadways normally located at the end of the High St. Where I lived there was Eltham Catford and Deptford but younger people never call it the Broadway now.
Thanks so much, Allan! I haven't been to Isle of Wight yet, but I look forward to going. Many of my travel vlogger friends have been and it looks great! So many places I need to visit or return to now that I have a channel... including the Isle of Mull, which is famous for OTTERS!! Cheers! XX Dara
This experience of travelling from Cheltenham to Broadway really won me over! It was brilliant. I highly recommend the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway!
Fun Fact: the first post boxes (4 in total) in the British Isles was in Jersey (C.I) in 23rd of November 1852. followed by Guernsey three months later, before the mainland of Britain got them.
@@MagentaOtterTravels OK, we were going to visit Broadway using the Gloucestershire Railway as you documented. So I was just wondering if we could see both.
Yes, I"m SO anxious to do that!!! Hoping we can in July when my sons come to visit. That would be great fun. We took them to Broadway when they were wee lads... and they haven't even seen Cheltenham yet! Cheers! Dara
It's on the main Rd from Malmesbury to cirencester. You cannot enter but there is a laybye opposite. They are breaking loads of planes mostly jumbo jets, last time I went past there were a lot of new planes in because of airlines going out of business, quite a spectacle if you like planes
@@peterwatson9296 Interesting, I thought that sort of thing was only being done out in the Arizona desert. Surprised that it's happening in the Cotswolds, but next time we're in that area, we'll have to take a look. They need to convert one of those planes into a restaurant, like they've done in S. Korea.
@@MagentaOtterTravels You should get the USAF to fly you into RAF Fairford. Much closer to Cheltenham than Heathrow. Although flying in a C130 or B52 might not be as comfortable as a B777.
Wait, this is not the Broadway deli we're used to! Where's our pastrami on rye?? Seriously though, that place looks amazing. And our secret wish is that the bloke with the identical jacket secretly had his own channel called Magenta Marmot Journeys.
No corned beef or matzo ball soup or potato latkes in this one! But loads of other yummy vittles in this Broadway Deli! OK, you made me LOL with the magenta jacket comment. I hope that bloke subbed and sees his Broadway debut!!!
Hi Dara. I'm sorry, I know I promised, and I did set a reminder, but I fell asleep. Another MOT member answered your question but a couple of additions. The 'Royal Cypher' was on the first boxes introduced in 1852 but was omitted in 1879 together with "Post Office', and this lasted for 13 years. In your video the second box was probably installed between 1879 and 1892 and the first one looks older so was, maybe, one of the first boxes installed. Also, the second box has a 'Tab' holder at the top of the door but the first doesn't, so, maybe, it has a preservation order. If I think of anything else " I'll be back". 🙂
No worries, Bobby! You live a million time zones away, and your sleep is more important than my premiere! LOL But I am very grateful to have you view it at any time... and love to get the interesting info on the post box history. They are both rather old post boxes there in Broadway! How cool! Cheers!
Yes, I agree they are quite different! I am glad that you are fans of this Broadway too💕
@@MagentaOtterTravels Both are quite something, it's nice to experience Broadway in the States but we do prefer the picturesque one :)
@@KirstenJoerg definitely me too!
Lovely tour! 👍
Thanks for coming along!
@@MagentaOtterTravels our pleasure. MOT tribe! 👍
No question that the "loos with views" are nicer than the carpark toilets, though ;-)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Yes, I agree that you need a Broadway visit for sure! Maybe you could get some fun Cotswold food items in the deli too ;-)
The deli used to be a toy shop when I was little - it seemed a huge shop then, but in recent times I've returned it doesn't seem quite so big! Also the road through the middle used to be really busy when I was little before they built a bypass road.
So funny that you mention the deli, because we just ate there yesterday! Lol
Yes, I know what you mean.
That's interesting... I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing that little bit of London history ;-) Cheers X
i always love your videos , migt have missed it , but have you visisted the isle of wight , many thanks for your posts
Thanks so much, Allan! I haven't been to Isle of Wight yet, but I look forward to going. Many of my travel vlogger friends have been and it looks great! So many places I need to visit or return to now that I have a channel... including the Isle of Mull, which is famous for OTTERS!! Cheers! XX Dara
Im really keen on Steam Railways.
This experience of travelling from Cheltenham to Broadway really won me over! It was brilliant. I highly recommend the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway!
Thank you.
I'm ready to go to the Cotswolds now! If only I didn't have to take a covid test and quarantine, I'd be there tomorrow!
The restrictions seem to be easing up, so it should become easier to travel before long!
The flashing lights in the Lygon Arms are a bit spooky.
Must be a frame rate problem?
Fun Fact: the first post boxes (4 in total) in the British Isles was in Jersey (C.I) in 23rd of November 1852. followed by Guernsey three months later, before the mainland of Britain got them.
the channel islands are SO progressive! Way ahead of their time ;-)
Dara, Can you walk from Broadway Tower to the Village of Buckland?
I suppose anything is possible, but I would not recommend it. It could take you an hour and a half to do that hike. But it's a 12 minute drive.
@@MagentaOtterTravels OK, we were going to visit Broadway using the Gloucestershire Railway as you documented. So I was just wondering if we could see both.
Something to add to your list, is that you can now take a steam railway trip from Broadway to Cheltenham ( racecourse).
Yes, I"m SO anxious to do that!!! Hoping we can in July when my sons come to visit. That would be great fun. We took them to Broadway when they were wee lads... and they haven't even seen Cheltenham yet! Cheers! Dara
Have you been past the plane breakers at Kemble?
No... tell me about that. Should we go?
@@jjsmallpiece9234 you know, we almost moved to Fairford instead of Cheltenham! One day I’m going to publish a video about that…
Wait, this is not the Broadway deli we're used to!
LOL
But I am very grateful to have you view it at any time... and love to get the interesting info on the post box history. They are both rather old post boxes there in Broadway! How cool! Cheers! XX Dara
The Golden Fleece?
I am so bad at this: I do well getting NZ and Australia right but from the States I never know the time difference. I'll be here if I am awake! 🤩 🇳🇱🙋♀️🇳🇿

Many famous people visit and stay in Broadway
John Wayne stayed in the Lygon Hotel back in the 70s
That is a fun fact!! Funny story: up in the residential area, we kept seeing this older fellow in sunglasses. He had longish hair and I kept telling Ian that I was sure he was a retired rockstar from the 70's whose name I just didn't know ;-)
My wife once nearly ran over Van Morrison , he was more interested in the buildings than looking where he was going 😂😂
@@davidfuters7152 that’s funny!🤣
At about 5:43 in your video there are two gentlemen on horseback riding by. They are dead ringers for Josh and Jason, the two guys on the channel "JJ Extra", also about travel in Britain! I would bet a small amount of money that it's the same guys. I just watched a video they did about Cirencester.
@@dennisferrell3662 yes I'm familiar with their channel! You should comment on their latest video and ask them if they were in Broadway in 2022 riding horses!
Edward the 8th Post Boxes are the most valuable if fact anything from E8th period is mega expensive and rare
Ooooh, good to know! My son from Boston just arrived a few days ago and we were discussing this very topic! Thanks for the information 👍.
Cheers! Dara
yep--it must be unique ---for a Nazi King
I wonder if they would have built the tower if they had drones 🤔
what do you mean? If they could see the views via drone, they wouldn't have bothered to build a Rapunzel tower?
@@MagentaOtterTravels A possibility
Only negative is having to wait until Friday.
Bless your heart 💗
Broadway would be so much better if it were traffic free.
Only horses!
Talking of horses, have you ever been in Cheltenham for the Festival or been to the Badminton Three Day Event?
@@lizbignell7813 No. Not yet. I think the Cheltenham Festival is in March, which is a bit too early for us. The Badminton Trials are also a bit too early, at the beginning of May. We have visited the village of Badminton, which is lovely.
I thought they might be a bit early for you but l would recommend either if you ever get the chance.
But how would have you got there 🤔
I'm really enjoying your video tour of the Cotswolds, and this Broadway programme was no exception: superb filming, with great aerial footage, superb soundtrack...and a guest appearance from Ian. (Note to Ian: you need to make more guest appearances!) Well...we all now know where to go for afternoon tea 🧁 🍰🫖 ☕
It's a running joke in our home that whenever Richard Wells comments, he is going to say that Ian needs to have more time on camera! Did you like his avocado mask that he was wearing the church? haha
Next week I'm taking a break from the Cotswolds to do a food video for fun... but after that we are back to the Cotswolds for Stow on the Wold! And you'll be chuffed to know that Ian has lots more time on camera... AND there's loads of aerial footage. I think Ian's drone photography of Stow is some of the best he has done! Cheers! XX Dara
More appearances!? I don't know how I feel about that, especially if, when we're there this summer, I'm not able to hide behind a mask.
@@ians3586 Unmasked! Think of the fame...and the appearance fees!
