    This is a great video! I actually just did this alteration last week before I watched this. I came across this video last night and thought you did a great job explaining this process. I wanted to share my own personal tips too if you don't mind. You are right about opening up the seam past the belt loops more because it's easier to pin that in place and then sew under the belt loops in place. But if you have a very small butt like I do, and you have 3 inches to take in, you will get a bubble under the center seam of pants, which is not very nice. So in order to avoid that, you can go all the way to the front of pants and open up past the belt loops there and just make the elastic longer and the gathering will be distributed more evenly so you don't have such a bump under the center seam, if you have no butt like me. If you have a high waist pant style, then this won't really happen, but my jeans are more mid rise and it didn't look as nice as yours did. I hope this helps someone reading this! xoxo

    This is how I do it. It's so easy and makes such a difference. Only, I always rip the upper part of the waistband, never the bottom, except when it's not possible, since it's easier to sew it back.

    It's a mystery why they can't make jeans that actually fit the female figure! I've been putting elastic in jeans waistbands for 50 years but I think your method is particularly neat, worthwhile tips!

    Literally said "genius" out loud as you explained what you were doing with the elastic. So good. I think I would even be willing to hand stitch the hem back on because it's such a tiny stretch, and then you can make sure you actually catch that inner waistband. SO GOOD!

    Very elegant solution, though - I wouldn't have thought, that you can take in that much extra width that way.

    Thanks so much for the clear explanation! I was able to take in a good 6 cm at the waist of my jeans, and it's practically invisible and super comfy--I looked up a bunch of methods, and this worked really well for a pair of high-waisted loose-leg jeans with zero stretch which fit really well at the hips and just needed some taking in at the waist. (I went from the front belt loops, as suggested in the comments, and also sewed under the side belt loops to secure the elastic there once the scrunch was distributed the way I liked it!)

    • @LydiaNaomi
      @LydiaNaomi  3 роки тому +5

      Thank you! The jeans I used had zero stretch, adding the elastic made them comfy, though they are now fitted. So Stretch or nonstretch is fine, you just want pants that fit in the hips and only need to be taken in a few inches at the back :)

    I am SO glad you didn't just slap the elastic on the inside! I have hypersensitivity issues with texture on my skin so just having the elastic on the inside like all other tutorials say to do would drive me CRAZY. For that reason, I seriously haven't found a single good beginner sewing tutorial that is even possible for me because of how insane the textures would make me. And I don't have to do any bullshit math with this one, either! This tutorial is a lifesaver for my autistic ass 😔🙏

    Awesome job Lydia!!! And I'm definitely overdue to watch and review your previous denim alteration vids as well. I'll have to double check which method(s) would be most suitable for me.
    This looks like a great option for adding comfort to the denim (as you said, having a meal without undoing the top button lol), and I believe your previous vids offered a very tailored look (definitely on MY wishlist for my oversized thrifted finds and what used to be my go to jeans prior to my weight loss lol) ~ either way, definitely an excuse for some denim binge watching on this channel!
    Future ideas you could consider for denim... your attempts at making reconstructed jeans in the styles of EB Denim and/or Vetements Denim!! That would be so cool to see!!! Both of those brands are VERY unique... and expensive... but look like a cool DIY!
    😊❤👍

      @thethriftyfawn 3 роки тому

      @@LydiaNaomi Thank you as well! As for EB Denim and Vetements Denim, YAAAAAAAAS!!! Those companies make beautiful and unique STATEMENT pieces from repurposed vintage levi's jeans (and perhaps other types of vintage denim)... to get a really quick idea of what I'mtalking about, type either of their names in google images to see a variety of outstanding examples! They are out of this world, but listed at a very high price... I get it, it's hand crafted art, but for those of us in the crafting community they could be an inspiration for some art of our own!
      I've seen a handful of youtube videos where random people made their own DIY attempts with these styles. Awesome to see the motivation, however those who I watched even outright admitted that they did not have any formal design or garment construction experience, not did they provide any instructions on what they were doing as they worked. I think you would have an ADVANTAGE on the youtube platform on covering this topic, and your videos would be highly sought after! For both inspiration and instruction!
