I used something like this break in method for my dynamite big red engine I'm amazed from the effects. I have a 160cc tank and the engine gets up to 30 minutes of run time on nitrotane. It's amazing.
You guys are the best. Huge inspiration for me. I'm in my late 20s now and am just now getting back into Rc racing. Growing up I did motor cross but a near fatal accident ended my career. Watching you run is absolutely an inspiration and precise. Your parents are also the best. I am running the same engine as you as well as tires. My chassis is more alone the Adam drake style 😵 (mainly because it was available locally). Anyway. Huge thanks for all the lunch breaks I took watching you run and be amazed. I wish you all the best of luck in the 2016 season and if I can find a trustworthy enough employee to run my store for a week I will be seeing you around this year within the states. Good video. I know there are a million ways to break in an engine but this way must work considering Ty's impeccable engine reliability during races. Break in benches have there use especially if your breaking in multiple engines a season but they don't offer the same load on the engine as when it's installed on the car so it's slightly different. People seem to love break in stations others hate them but either way it's 100 important that you break in the engine on its entirety.
this might sound funny to really new drivers... but when i ran nitro i use full throttle break-in method for the first 2-5 tank (up to how the engine act more or less fuel) but now that i think of it i was not getting the heat in the engine that it probably should for best results (now i make sure the engine was not too cold on start up like the vid show). i did do a step 2 lean out in small steps slowly putting heat in the engine before i was done (but still i think the pro might be right to low of heat can be bad to). the full throttle method use lot of air and gas so it never get hot (the wheel hardly turn) "do not try if you are a noob plz"!!!. i bet the best way to break-in is a combo of full throttle method with heat gun on it.... this way you get the heat for proper metal expansion so you dont wear out the pinch/compression on start up and the extra fuel increase lubrication to the moving/friction parts. (anyways i'm in florida so i'm sure i had a little bit more heat than most)!!!
Been using this method for years, still havent had to rebuild an engine since break-in Broke in all my Engines this way, TRX 3.3, OFNA Force .28, Nova .21 it doesnt matter, this method just works and my engines all make great power and live very long lives. I've put about a gallon of nitro through each of them and the piston is still nice and tight for every last one. Please Note: cheaper nitro engines like traxxas need to be sealed with liquid gasket on the back plate, carb o-ring, and head, with green slime on all the needle threads. If you dont do this you will have air leaks, giving you lean conditions, the engine will break in too hot and tuning will be near impossible.

I was told when heating a motor with heat gun,to always heat from top center of the head.If you heat from one side,it expands one side then you have a distorted sleeve!
Roy Mariano , really because the piston and sleaves expand together so when u get done u need to make sure your piston is at tdb so that the sleaves comes back for a tight fit this is y u cool it down I do it in between each tank on break in with shorter time in between this will make sure your engine will last longer and have a tight fit

Quite an extensive break-in. And how long will an engine last before needing a rebuild? I know maintenance and engine care come into play but I'd still like an idea of how many gallons put through the engine before needing rebuild. Thanks.
+Brian Mars It really depends on how often you replace your air filters, the quality of your fuel, etc... most decent racing engines like OS or Novarossi can get probably 7 or 8 gallons on them on average before needing any major work done. Could be more, could be less but by then you may need the sleeve resized or a new conrod or rear bearing. I usually tear my engines apart every 1-2 gallons and inspect everything and clean up any rust, etc. A proper break in goes a long way too. The method Gord shows here is a really good break in method and will keep the engine from being stressed too hard right away when the engine is still new and tight.
Kenneth Peet ,,well I prefer to put a load on the motor u will be running, I have done bench break ins and have blown motors that way...not having a load on it is not such a good thing on something that will be ran with a load all the time as in r.c cars and boats....i would fallow his break in ...they do there's the same as I do only a few more tanks then me I run any where from 12 to 15 tanks in mine and my motors last forever only changing my bearings every year...dont follow some of the fool's on here only run ing three tanks at just idle like I have seen on here...i think his name is alishoman or something like that ....plz use gross and toys method...hints his wins and engine reliability......ty is the man
How soon can u adjust the needles? I broke in a motor last week and couldnt get it to hold any temp untill i leaned up the top about 1 full turn.. I had a heat gun blasting on it and also with a head heater
Chase Petrucci I've found that most motor companies send the carburetor with the needles extremely rich. So what I do is take a carburetor off of a motor that I've run on the track, measure the carburetor settings with a caliper and then richen the top end half of a turn. This is a good starting point.

Nathaniel W , I have ran 12 tanks In my new motor for break in and still plan on break in more with this one....when u break in slow like they do motors will last for ever...i have motors over ten yrs old and have never been rebuilt other then new bearings every year in it from the abuse the bearings take I make sure they r good every year
Demirhan Demirci ,and I'm sure it would be vp fuel witch is awesome stuff consistent needle setting and cooler engine temps even if lean u can back off of it and the engine will cool...i use a half gallon of vp to break in my new lrp. 28 spec 4 and it was great for break in in....most people never do a proper break and this is why people go throw so many piston and sleaves....i have motors I have broke in and I have ran 8 to 12 gallons in them and they r still great and I use for back ups, the only thing I do after every year is change the bearings and put tons of atf with marvel mystery oil in them and wrap in a plastic zip lock bag over the winter time....break in is a long process but I. The end it will be worth the time and will be a happy motor and long life....and always clean out with wd-40 for 10 to 15 seconds and then put your after run oil in this will help keep your bearings clean and lub up if u r putting it away for awhile
Andreas Stringer You should avoid using anything with adhesive because it will melt and stick to the head and make a mess. But you can use a lot of different things, in the past I've even used folded up paper towel with a rubber band around it. Basically you just want to keep the head from losing heat.
Ali Cooper Yep, an engine heater will work, it will just take a little bit longer. You can also leave the engine head heater on to keep the engine from cooling while you're breaking it in.
march281272 In the video I've used the Exergen temp gun, but we've recently started using the Protek temp gun which is cheaper and smaller, and seems to be just as accurate.

I started doing this 16 years ago. My motors would last a very long time and maintain a lot of pinch.
For tanks 2-3-4, should the engine come down to ambient temperature before proceeding to the next tank?

Nice, I think the foam idea is great. Probably smells better than a dirty old sock too, lol.

Lenny7118 when you turn off the engine....you'll rock the flywheel....it should be free and smooth....thats when its at the bottom!

This is about opposite of the wot method. I never thought the wot method sounded good. Has to be very strenuous on the motor.
