- With Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake finally out, I figured I'd give some impressions on the game after playing the first 2 chapters. So far, it truly is a marvelous experience a lot like the original was, in some ways even better! And if you haven't picked up this stellar game yet, then what are you waiting for?

When Prince Mush gets up after coming out of the crystal star, that animation was way too lovely.
Dude! I saw that and was like "Yoooo that's so smoooooth!"
One thing I've GOTTA give this remake, that straight up makes it better than the OG imo, is completion. I NEVER got all the badges, star pieces, shine sprites etc. In the original. Just whatever i needed/wanted and then i was done. Here? Now that you have counters on the map of your progress, and actively open new sound tests/concept art for finding them all in an area, I have felt way more than happy to 100% this game. Ontop of everything else, having an incentive to keep playing it and completing it really pushes it over the original for me.
An already long experience made even longer through incentive collecting.
when we were kids we didnt care about 100%ing lol
@@johnisskinterI remember being a kid and it taking hours or days to complete 1 level lmao
I remember how long it took me to find that one badge to get 100% completion back in the day! I even had to resort to watching UA-cam tutorials in order to complete the recipes! 😂
@@johnisskinter Speak for yourself
I like how they just took the original game, saw what was bad, and just improved it. THIS is a TRUE remake and im gonna 100% it ALL THE WAYYYYYY
same
already got all star pieces and shine sprites. never did that in my 4 playthroughs of the original
A true remake made by the OGs (And some new members) of Paper Mario TTYD. A true love letter to what they did back in the Gamecube. This shall remain a treasure for YEARS.
22:01 The Cat Calling is actually still in the game with the sleazy Doogan in Petalburg, and he reappears in many different towns one being the Twilight Town Shop and is always sleazily talking about a random Female character
Yet for some reasons lines like "you're nuts" or "this place is actually insanely old" got removed for implying mental illness?
But no complaints about multiple female characters kissing Mario without his consent? Typical
@@rainofkhandaq6678specially with Vivian being ‘trans’. A nonconsensual kiss at the end of Ch. 4 from her doesn’t sit right.
@@alejohp8725 To be fair, if you live in the real world consent can be communicated nonverbally. Not everyone asks "may I kiss you" before they do it.
@@Luxembourgish you’re right. I really don’t care, but I’m agreeing with the double standard being pointed out by the person I replied to.
As far as I’m concerned, Mario being a harem MC in this game is hilarious.
The Mice are called "Little Mousers" from Yoshi's island the the Dogs are called "Doogan".
It's the _small_ stuff, ya know? ❤
SO MANY of these, and they go a _long_ way to make an already rich world and set of characters even more memorable and alive!
Why hello my friend!
😊
Something I'd like to point out is that the Trouble Center only allowing 1 quest at a time does make some sense from a lore perspective. If you manage to find the secret back entrance to the Trouble Center, you'll find that it's run by a member of the Robbos, the rival gang of the Pianta Syndicate. As such, the idea is that they're running it to make money by forcing people to pay in order to cancel the troubles they take.
However, yeah, being able to only take one at a time is pretty silly from a gameplay perspective, so I completely understand why some people are disappointed by that.
It feels wonderful to replay this.. like honestly
"I went straight for Gus like any TYD veteran with a pair of nuts" hahahahah
I just beat the game a few minutes ago, and as a longtime observer, first-time player of TTYD...
I FREAKIN' *LOVED* IT!
This is probably the best remake I've ever seen with the amount of respect they gave to the original game unlike many others(Looking at you FFVII)
This is my first time playing this game, and I’m having a blast so far! I completed the first chapter last night. Definitely worth the money
Its incredible that we come up to this way, to having one the most heartbreaking interview I may had ever seen on a videogame, to a remake of one of, if not the best Mario RPG we were demanding for so much time. There are people here and there saying is an inferior version because FPS and other stuff. Don´t care. This is fantastic. And probably will look even more marvelous on 4K with the Switch 2.
I love how the characters look. They're like figures. And I want them to sell me a figure of Princess Peach that looks exactly like the one in the game.
Marvelous?
Marvelous Compass?
Does anyone here remember that one tweet where some dude deadass believed if Nintendo remade the thousand year door they would change everything to be more generic this game feels like it was made just to give that person the middle finger (in a good way)
I'm on chapter 4. I forgot that badge in chapter 1. The original was already amazing. The second tutorial they took that roulette bingo thing out of that second tutorial and they added a third tutorial which was originally in the second tutorial but for speedrunners they have the third tutorial that wasn't there originally. They have it happen on the way to that trivia game in chapter 1 and you can't skip it but it is still amazing.
0:47 please don't give Nintendo. Any ideas 😭
How?
@@ladysegagenesissimplifying the character designs would decrease the originality and creativity of a game. They didn’t do that here which made it so much more fun to explore
This remake is a dream come true!
11:21 as someone who has completed the game, I have some insight on this. (I won't spoil anything for those who haven't played the OG).
IMO...Chapter 4's backtracking is wonderfully reduced and is honestly put in the perfect spot. Right when going back and forth would get annoying, they make it way easier. Chapter 5 though...not so much. A particular part of it is now less annoying, but you still have to go back and forth a couple times.
By no means a deal breaker, but now that chapter 4 is basically fixed, chapter 5 stands out way more I feel.
some people hate this for some reason, i don't care, this remake made ttyd my second favorite video game of all time
Been watching you since Color Splash! Keep up the great work. I really hope that Nintendo/Intelligent Systems keeps this RPG Paper Mario formula for future Paper Mario games. I really really hope this isn’t a one time thing.
I'm a Yu-gi-oh player. I believe in the cards that includes sight cards in Super Paper Mario.
What the new pipe room also improves upon is the side content. While yes, doing just multiple troubles at a time would be more ideal, outside of the extra trip to Hooktail castle among a couple others all of them are much more manageable and take much less time to do because of the convenience of warp pipes cutting down on the time. Thus improving the pacing. It takes much less time to complete.
10:27 You’re mocking voice sound like Sid from Ice Age. 😆
Actually I’m going to go ahead and lightly spoil it for you, chapter four did something to help mitigate the back tracking. Hint, check every house/room, nough said
Yeeeh😮
I'm almost done with chapter 3 so thank you! I always talk to every character in every house. My brain won't let me move on without doing so 😅
I saw that...I ignored it because I wanted to play the game as originally intended.
Besides, nobody talks about the roadblock that is Chapter 5's Peach Interlude.
First-timer here.
I have played 3 of the 5 Mario & Luigi games, 2 of which since I was a kid
I have beaten (I think) every mainline game barring NSMBU/LU
I played Super Paper Mario extensively as a child, and it remains as a personal favorite. And for years and years and years, Super Mario Galaxy has been my favorite game of all time.
This game has officially dethroned Galaxy to me. It is without a doubt now my favorite game of all time.
Thank you, Nintendo.
Got the game today. Was eager to speak with my wallet to Nintendo. One of my favorite games ever. Thus, I discovered this channel today while binging any and all Paper Mario TTYD videos. Excellent stuff.
Some notes
The pressing A to go down pipes is something from origami king, and i personally think it's better, since going down to enter pipes can feel a bit awkward since it's a 3d game, and having to press A is more precise.
I do think having so you can't skip dialogue helps with the pacing of the conversations since the characters have proper voices, but there should still be a OPTION to skip the dialogue for repeat playthroughs, at least a option to outright skip cutscenes (which is something that is already in game, but only for boss cutscenes in case you died to them)
and yeah, the trouble center sucks. it's genuinely a terrible side quest system, and even if you could choose multiple sidequests, it still wouldn't be great because the quests themselves and the rewards simply aren't interesting enough (something that bug fables did better imo).
hopely the next paper mario game has the classic battle system (with more well balanced badges and partners, tweaked and modernized existing mechanics alongside new ones as well), TTYD's story and character but also having the extremely detailed and well designed overworlds, the polished visual fidelity, sound design and the dozens of QoL features that modern paper mario had.
of course, alongside improving the other game mechanics TTYD had, like the trouble center and the recipes
Honestly I do not understand these frame rate discussion, like game looks and runs beautifully. I am currently on the moon base and have had zero issues whole game. Like it is turn based so not heavy action set pieces so 30 frames/sec is not a real issue
First timer, it definitely lives up to the hype. I’m a longtime fan of Mario RPGs even though I missed this and 64.
My favorite new thing is giving the party members their own character theme and also the dialog after beating Hooktail feels a lot better.
I haven't gotten my hands on the Remake yet, but soaking up all of the new details and additions makes me happy.
I know they’re just minor changes, and they were definitely inoffensive, but I do feel kinda mixed on some of the things like the dialogue changes such as the ones in the prologue.
I’m totally fine with Vivian being supposedly identified as transgender, but I do think it’s kinda weird that they changed some things in the dialogue while keeping some of the English dialogue in tact, like Hooktail’s offer to smell her feet. Though, keep in mind that this is coming from someone who doesn’t really know much about things like the Japanese dialogue.
I’m technically in the same boat with you, it’s not a huge deal to me, it’s whatever, but I do agree with you about some of those changes being weird. Though, I do think it’d be nice if they did do something like add an update where you can actually have the option to change the dialogue to make it be more like the English dialogue like how it was in the GameCube version, maybe have an individual toggle for, I dunno if it has to be EVERY chapter, but for points like the prologue and chapters 2 and 4.
Again, not a big deal, but I do think it’d be kinda nice. I personally can’t imagine it’d be that difficult to add along with being able to take on more than one trouble center request after activating them. I do kinda miss the three goombas that you encounter in the sewers catcalling Goombella and her being a complete sass towards them in response. I mean, that’s pretty much what made Goombella herself, and things like that are part of why I really enjoyed TTYD’s writing in the English GC version.
Aside from those minor things, the game still greatly holds up as one of my most favorite video games ever, and I like it even more now with the improvements made and the things that were even added in the remake.
Wait, why is 1600x900 considered a "huge compromise"…? So many Switch games hit far lower resolutions. Pikmin 3 Deluxe only manages 720p at 30fps, Pikmin 4 going for a resolution only marginally higher than 720p, Princess Peach Showtime outputting in a similarly chonky resolution, and Bowser's Fury doing 720p and struggling to hit 60fps. Somehow NOW 1600x900 is an issue…? It's the same exact resolution and frame rate Origami King had… except Origami King had performance issues with certain events and bosses, dropping noticeably down to 20fps. This game gives us a VERY smooth 30fps.
Would I like it to be 1080p? Sure. But on my 65" 4KTV, 1600x900 still looks pretty damn good. Even the reduced frame rate doesn't bother me for the most part. The only time it does is when the screen is scrolling really fast, like when I use Mini-Yoshi to travel faster.
My favorite part of the game is when Vivian points me out to the police officers, and they light me up.
I'm loving any minute I have with this remake. It's a gorgeous game that's even better on the Switch. I need a true sequel to this.
It’s game of the stinking year!
Reached chapter 3 today, and i love this remake
I wished it was perfect, but it's happy it still happened in the end
If you like the music, here's something I found really cool (Spoilers ofc) Yoshi Kid's new theme uses the same motif as the egg chase. Love that so much.
Really, the only thing this remake had to do to be better than the original was make the backtracking less tedious. At the time I’m typing this, I’m just coming up to Chapter 4, so I don’t know if they did anything to mitigate going between Twilight Town to Creepy Steeple and back yet. But already, getting from the top of Rougeport to the titular Door is so much better, as is the dedicated fast travel room. Throw in the devs going above and beyond with the visuals and soundtrack (oh, and SKIPPABLE CUTSCENES), and yeah. This game rules so far, can’t wait to play more.
There's a pipe in the house near the exit to Twilight Town that takes you straight to the Creepy Steeple.
the remake is my first time playing ttyd after meaning to for like 2 or 3 years. i knew the game was phenomenal before i finished chapter 1, and even about halfway through chapter 4 i'm still having so much fun with it. over the past few years i've heard people say that it's potentially the best mario game of all time and i think i might agree. seeing this game sell out on amazon and top the eshop best sellers list makes me so excited if it means we get another game like ttyd
I'm loving the remake.
While the backtracking was never an issue for me except for
General white.
i like that their's ways to alleviate the backtracking regardless.
Musically, this is gonna be a bit of a hottake.
OG TTYD was my least favorite soundtrack of the first four paper mario's
( yes I prefer sticker star's ost to OG TTYD )
The remixes makes TTYD up there with PM 64's soundtrack for me
( my favorite paper mario soundtrack is pm64 )
So amazing to play i enjoy it so much.
Probably my only real complaint is that there isn't a sort of option for the old english translation somewhere.
But that is just a nitpick in the grand scheme, cuz this game I think has entered its near perfect form here.
Like you, Unsimplifier kicked my ass - even more with Double Pain.
But that’s great, that’s as it should be.
Btw that special boss is really hard!
Yet there are people who say its just a port or sum shit. That just shows me they have no clue 🤣🤣 but regardless, this game is fucking awesome. Played through the og 2 yrs ago and now playing this remake even knowing whats gonna happen story-wise still makes a lot of fun. Im on the final chapter and will likely start with post game stuff today which is gonna be great
SPOILER
Prince Mush being a boss is a dream coming true i felt like it was a missed opportunity in the og so im glad that you can fight him now 🗿🗿
I've almost beaten chapter 6 and it is my new second favourite game.
The only criticism I have is the tutorials being the opposite of fixed. Other than that, this game is fantastic, and better than every way aside from the obvious nitpicks.
Hopefully the framerate will get patched. Believe it or not that's my only issue with this remake
Switch 2
Either way, the 30FPS downgrade isn't as drastic as some believe

Like a lot of masterpieces were old. And their reason keeps saying “nostalgia” when I’ve played Paper Mario Sticker Star and I didn’t progress beyond Chapter 2 because I don’t have any hints on where to go next and Kersti wasn’t helping matters.
The gameplay is flawed, if every attack is a consumable that means battling is a CHORE, and I’d rather AVOID enemies since the +5 HP collectibles are the ones that boost your attack power now
Not the enemies that provide EXP.

About the Vivian trans thing, what I find annoying is how people are gaslighting to make it seem some big win against censorship but it's still as censored as ever.
I would love if it was *actually* like the JP original in which every character sees Vivian as a guy at first and only towards the end of the game does this change.
It shows growth and adds a layer of character depth that is just missing from the English version.
i mean, in the game's defence, it was a lot more controversial 20 years back. a lot of the terminology changed to be more "acceptable." i don't think they could just say it back then.
And to make your days brighter, Kensuke Tanabe was only regarded as a “Special Thanks” slot in the credits of TTYD.
This TTYD remake has Ryota Kawade and his (probably new) team making sure that this remake will sell and make Paper Mario GREAT AGAIN.
I’m pretty sure this has more to do with Tanabe having his hands full with Metroid Prime 4 right now.

@@SuperMarioT well considering in japanese sources they describe him as he/him. Indicates hes a cross dressing on the japanese version
Don't get me wrong, I understand the basis for Vivian being a crossdressing guy, but I feel like it could still be interpreted or intended as trans just as much. I get Goombella & a few others refer to Vivian as male, Otokonoko is more of a Japan thing too despite femboys existing everywhere outside, but Beldam's method was taken as antagonistic from Vivian, this character did not want to be referred to as masculine or male and Beldam's way of doing it was making fun of her or not taking her seriously.
