This is basically the third generation of this song. We had it first time round when Joni was younger, it was in a higher key, it sounded quite peppy. And then she reworked it into an orchestral version in 2000, now older, with a raspy voice, and more life experience and pain behind it. And now this version she first performed at Newport, which almost has a soothing quality to it. And this is what makes a legendary artist - they can recreate one of their songs which has been around for a long time, and give it a completely different meaning and emotion. Joni is a national treasure, and we are all so privileged to be able to share in her journey. This performance made me cry. Thank you Brandi for helping Joni back to the stage.
Yes - 3 generations - as a younger woman, as a older woman, and now as someone who has survived the unthinkable. The resonance grows with each stage of her life.
Agree, agree agree, and agree some more! she is bloody sensational, loved her for years, and i had no idea she was back in the music game! National Treasure.... YES! LONG LIVE CANADA AND LONG LIVE JONI!!
And the amazing part of that performance at Newport was all these people in the crowd in their 20s and 30s, who weren't even born yet when those songs were recorded, that were singing along to her music ❤Brandi and every other musician that's performed with her are why I still have hope for the music industry. None of them had to, but they all helped Joni get back on stage to see how much she and her music are still loved
Joni Mitchell's voice is like a fine wine ... It's deepened & aged w/ time into something even more exquisitely beautiful than it already was. Sheer perfection. 🎶🤍🎹🤍🎶
I agree I definitely like the version of her live and older now like at the Newport festival or even right here at the moment. I truly believe she gets better with age
What a privilege to witness Joni Mitchell not only (a)live but also giving a beautiful performance of "Both Sides, Now" on stage with everyone of you supporting her. Thank you everyone and thank you Brandi Carlisle for helping Joni Mitchell on her way back.
This song was great when I was younger, but it is even greater now that I’m older. It has a much deeper meaning now. Thank you Joni and Brittany and all of the musicians on stage. Bravo!
Many of her other songs were picked up by other artists, and when David Crosby saw her playing at the Gaslight South in Florida, and took her to LA helping her get a management and record deal. I was at her concert in 1998, She finally got a chance to sing "Woodstock" at the site of the 1969 festival at 1998's 'A day at the Garden'. She released her debut album Song to a Seagull (also sometimes known simply as Joni Mitchell) and as she toured built up a bigger and bigger profile, leading up to the release of Clouds in 1969, which went to number 31 in the charts, and Joni had most definitely arrived. Tell me Lab4389 , did you ever had the opportunity to see her perform live on stage ?
Ms. Carlile- Thank you for being such a supportive friend to Ms. Mitchell. People have no idea how many health scares Ms. Mitchell has gone through & yet, she persevered. Having her be the voice of my generation is an honor, & I'm so happy you are making it possible for other generations to experience her prophetic genius. Ms. Mitchell- "Oh, but now old friends, they're acting strange And they shake their heads and they tell me that I've changed Well, something's lost, but something's gained In living every day". And at 66, I still "Really don't know life at all".
I don't define myself as this but I will tell you I am a stage 4 cancer patient and my friend introduced me to the video of you and her at the Newport festival and I cried I had never heard this song before and never really listened to Joni Mitchell at all. guess you could say I really don't know her at all lol but I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate that video. I hope everyone has a wonderful day ❤
Helped my through my cancer in 2005, after i've seen "Life as a House" where this Song was played. A very sad Movie and i loved it, to wallow in my sadness. I made it, but it was not that serious as stage 4. What i learned, was to enjoy every day and after that i had no more fear to die, another great gift! Hopefully you'll make it, all the best!
This was just absolutely perfectly put together. I’m one of the lucky ones. I got to hear both side of this song from Joni. It was special when it was brand new. This performance of it is stunning! The pure sweet voices backing her. The instruments played with so much feeling! And our Queen Joni giving us her heart. Again. Perfection. 🫶🏼😎🫶🏼
She will forever be one of the most beautiful and important singer-songwriters of our time. What a wonderful lady! And thank you Brandi for making sure she gets her credit
This is lovely. Means so much more from her now. Always loved the song, but not when she sang it. But her voice is now so mellow and the jazz tones much more suited to the song. Brava
Thank you Joni for all the musical memories. You inspired my poetry and my drawing. I love the classic songs you made popular and also the obscure songs you made which are even better. Your legacy will continue for a long time.
An amazing performance, especially given what Ms. Mitchell has been through during her life. Thank you for posting this and bringing such joy to Ms. Mitchell and all of us. You all are an inspiration.
The song still brings out all the feels ❤And I love seeing all theses celebrities that have been performing with Joni these past few years (including Brandi Carlile, who's had a major part in bringing Joni back to the stage since her illness, expanding on the Joni Jam idea that Joni herself started from her living room and making it a full-on concert series)
Both Sides Now, Rainbow Connection 🌈 , and Longer by Fogelberg are my 3 most favorite songs, as they’re so beautiful and hearing them always take me back to the greatest times of my life as a child. I can be having the worst day and any of these songs will level me out, better than a Xanax (for me). Anyway, interesting to see Brandi here with a Martin. Usually only see her w/ Gibsons.

This truly touched my heart. The melody so familiar but the lyrics have gained newfound depths and richer flavors over time, ultimately evolving into an entirely new dimension of meaning. Thank you for the experience.
Musical GODDESS! The voice and song writing ability - almost unmatched - and a major shout out to the incredible talent that is Brandi Carlile for reminding us oldies and informing the young uns how incredible this great Canadian is!!!!!!!!!!!!! has to go down as one of the greatest live performances EVER!
When your life is singing and it brings you joy...you just have to sing ! No matter how your voice has changed from life's challenges ! I love you Joni ! I can relate to the challenges your health can bring ....but when your voice and vocal cords etc come together and cooperate once more ....its like a big hug from an old friend !
Just wonderful. I keep watching the last verse and the ending over and over. She knows exactly what to do. That last phrase, the way she ends it and it feels a little unresolved, just perfect.

Haven’t seen her perform since her retrospective hosted by (can’t recall her name) where Graham Nash brought her Grammy “wrapped in garbage” lol. She’s an icon and seeing this is heartwarming. God bless her
Her 2001 performance with the amazing orchestra and muted trumpet is unforgettable. She has tempered this song with age and experience and loss. So much sadder now than the original which was whimsical at the time. Now its profound. Or maybe I've changed, I dont know.
She’s also been through a stroke… or similar brain event that left her unable to talk, let alone sing. Funny, I wasn’t a fan of this song originally, nor a big Joni fan. But watching her work so hard-and seeing the love and support and hard work all those ladies on the stage gave her to reach this point-I’ve become a fan of Joni… and this song holds meaning now for me that it didn’t before. I have a new respect for Joni and all those on stage. Kudos!❤
@@dmcewen772 I recently made a lifetime list of music I've curated for the last 50 years. I did it for my son. Her 2001 version made it to my top 10. Also, if you get a chance, listen to Take Me With You by Liz Fraser. Possibly the best song I've ever heard about love and loss.

As I say to my child and close friends, it sucks getting old; however, we hope that we conveyed a sense of civility, acceptance, and love of Arts.

Now if we can only get rid of Trevor Noah.
Brought me to tears. Good tears. Nobody could ever sing this like Joni!
Excuse me I'm just over here devastated and sobbing. So much history and life in her voice. ❤😢
She's courageous, willing and devoted lady. She has a flower kind of voice, so easy going to unbearable. She's accurate and smart.
Joni Mitchell a National Treasure. God bless our Joni.

The pianist is very tasteful in his accompanying. Beautiful.
So much grace
I cry everytime I watch this. What a truly remarkable inspiration Joni is.❤❤❤❤❤

Done slow, space between for "Time" to digest such personal words of wisdom we all need to grow, better than we were yesterday.

What a blessing to be able to sing at her age. Beautiful music 🎵🎶
She's hilarious, excellent 💯
Chills, tears, didn't realize how long I was grinning through it all!

Beautiful, unfathomable Scorpio. Love you forever, Joni.
I didn't know that she's a Scorpio. Explains the incredible depth of feeling in her lyrics, guitar work and voice. Her music flows from her soul.
