Homemade Lathe Chisel - CHEAP & Easy

  • In this video I'm making a simple skew chisel for the woodturning lathe.
    Most people use files when making chisels but I don't think they are suited for the lathe, because they can snap easily in case of a catch.
    Since I know it's pointless to make a lathe chisel if you already have one, I'm using the skew itself to turn the handle for it.
    I hope you find the video useful!

    You'd better hope that shaft doesn't snap when you get a catch. That hammer drill chisel is not designed for those types of speed. I would recommend anyone who wants to use a lathe should buy the right tools. It can be a very dangerous piece of machinery especially with a home made tool.

      Well little guy, some of us like to live on the edge. I for one ride a motorcycle, sometimes without a helmet.
      I bet you were a helmet when your in your car with the windows rolled up wearing a mask..
      Come on man, get out there and enjoy life, don't be afraid to try new stuff, even if it might hurt you. life's to short to be afraid of thing's..

      @joepeanut6827 thanks big guy for the Belittling comment there, big guy. I do just fine on my tricycle wearing my helmet. The thing is, you can smear your face across the pavement after it is ripped apart from your handle bar by not wearing your helmet all you want but to go and tell somebody else to do It is foolish. But that's not what this is really about big guy. This is about putting out bad information online for anybody to view it Big guy. A Lathe is not something to f*ck around with big guy. Thanks for your input Big guy. Have fun on your sportster softail delux😘💅

      The part your missing, is it's made out of a chisel, and chisel's are made to be hammered on and they flex a little bit. it's not a file where its rock hard and will brake if you drop it. everything is fine calm down.

      I've seen a chap make paring cuts like this before with an axe and a Bowie knife.
      This tool is absolutely fine for it's purpose.

    I also use a very similar chuck and spur drive on a similar sized lathe for handle-making purposes. I've discovered that the (my) chuck can hold the spur; as long as I don't need the extra couple inches of length, I don't need to keep removing the chuck when switching back and forth. You slide it right in and the chuck collars it and locks it in place, unable to rotate or slide backwards. Within the (power) capacity of my Rikon 70-220, turning handles up to the size of the one in this video, I've had no issues.

    thats a really big chisel. looking forward to all its cameos in future videos you make.
    by the way, what happened to your second channel?

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  6 днів тому

      This video was meant to go on the second channel, but that channel was not "noticed" by youtube, videos only got views from a few hundred people coming from this channel.
      So it seemed kinda pointless to put videos there instead of the main channel.
