In 1957, Omega debuted a chronograph wristwatch that was meant to serve the growing amateur motorsport market; it was the same year that Roger Penske wheeled his Fuelie Corvette up the Bellefontaine Hill Climb and inspired others to do the same. It was a time in American motoring history when the average enthusiast could participate in any one of the open motorsport events across the country. The same sort of "gentleman driver" movement was happening across the Atlantic. It's easy to see why the Speedmaster was ready to fill such an important role, one that it was never intended to.
Omega never forgot about the origins of the Speedmaster. Although the racing line might play second fiddle to the universally lauded Moonwatch, a model dedicated to racing has consistently, and quietly, been in the Speedmaster lineup since its inception. This Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer is the most recent.
This was my first luxury watch I bought about a year and a half ago. fell in love with the orange hands. it's beautiful and more wearable than the size numbers might lead one to believe. beautiful watch!!! let's go speedmaster racing!
So glad to see the Speedmaster Racing get some attention. Honestly think it's quite overlooked by the general public!
True that 100%
How to improve lap time. Stop looking at and using watch
I read the title as: “why everyone forgets about the omega speedmaster”
And I was like:
Literally no one
You gave the Lug to Lug measurement! Yes! So many reviewers think case diameter is enough. For a better feeling of the size and comfort on my wrist I find lug to lug is more telling. Thank you! James Stacey also does that. props!
Agree- the Seiko tuna is 47mm I thinkA which sounds ridiculous but the lug to lug is also 47mm and it wears fine. The Seiko skx is bigger than a Rolex explorer 2 but wears much better (the above examples relate to my 7in wrist)
Yes and the Racing Chronometer contains Omega’s best automatic chronograph movement, caliber 9900....
Exactly, thanks for putting the watch back into its original context. What a great piece.
Finally, something about the Speedmaster that's not related to the moon.
Back when this watch was first offered, drivers would actually wear and use this type of watch, because most didn't have large teams, nor was that level warranted for most motorsport events. When people realized co-drivers were added weight, which slows you down, drivers also started using wrist-chronographs instead of dash clocks. Most events didn't have a large staff to manage every car running, so one-man or few-person operations often relied on the drivers to keep track of timing and average speeds through sections.
Agree
How good is this!! This is HODINKEE at there best and pushing amazing watching to the masses. Week done guys, this is amazing!
I just ordered my first watch, of course the Speedmaster Moonwatch. Should be here Monday
Bobby Zitting Learn how to use the tachymeter as soon as possible, so you will be ready for when you shall go to space.
You are a wise man
As much of a Hodinkee fan I am, I think this is a bit far fetched. Nobody is going to want to use the chronograph mid race and potentially lose focus and miss their line, or lose their life because they’re looking down at their watch.
They do but it's almost always a copilot or someone outside of the car from a vantage point. Releasing the wheel for even a second can prove to be fatal.
Trevor C. Right! The driver needs to be focusing on their texting.
Troll comment of the decade? Nice one bruv. I agree, unwashed masses as I like to call them.
@Dave Mendoza This is the dumbest comment that I have ever read on UA-cam.. 💩
ua-cam.com/video/dPQ-N4ZVLdE/v-deo.html 1:23 Walter Rorhl uses his watch to take lap time (not a race)
Excellent video! Lot of insight.. Kindly do more such videos HODINKEE!!
I've owned this watch for 2 years now, really love it. Great video thanks
>mankind's most prolific achievement
>prolific
I was looking for the ‘skip ad’ button the whole time
M Tbone LOL
Gentlemen "Start your engines" please give us more of this video creativity.
I love my speedmaster!
I have the white dial variant on leather strap. Sick watch. I debated heavy between the black dial in this video vs white and came to the conclusion that I like both equality...
This felt like a 5 minute advertisement
Speedy, the ultimate man's watch
great review and a great way to weave in sports car driving to show how to calculate your speed. Lighten up folks, the video was to show how to use the chronograph to calculate speed, I don't think he was trying to drive the best lap ever.
"The alternating track around the dial. This allows you to get down to 1/5 second increments."
I counted, recounted, and triple counted, and I'm pretty sure those are 1/4 second increments. The watch movement measures time in 1/8 second increments anyway, so 1/5 second marks on the dial would make no sense.
It's crazy that most of the time we forget that the Speedmaster was made for racing, this video is a nice tribute to that. best!
ugh
I had the opportunity to get my car out on the Road Atlanta track a month ago did four lap following a pace car that stretched up out a bit. The last thing I thought of as I tried to keep up was my chronograph.i have four chronographs. They are fun watches.I've used them on long trips and things like timing my coffee grinder.
This is my favourite omega by far. Love the black dial one on the leather strap.
Digging the new intro!!
They need to start making these speed masters in a 40mm version - I would have several,of that was the case.
It's a great watch............ that no real race car driver would ever wear while racing.
They'd let someone else handle the timing..
The alternating racing track around the dial actually ruins quick legibility of the seconds hand. Since the first hash after each 5min. marker alternates against and away from the bezel there's no rule that your mind can quickly make for them. Try one on and see what I mean. Waiting for the 9900 in a non racing dial personally....
Great great great video! Using a watch in a real scenario that’s the best kind of videos
Surprised they didn't mention the hidden GMT fuctions. My favourite chronograph movement...
Hmm didn't know that, Care to explain?
@@BuddhaRice It has an independently adjustable hour hand, so you can adjust the hour without stopping the timekeeping. The downside is that it replaced the quickset date.
@@BuddhaRice So as Justus Harris pointed out, you can move the hour hand by itself. But furthermore, the 60 Minute / 12 Hour chronograph sub dial is can be used as a second time zone. You simply start the chronograph of Noon or Midnight in the timezone you wish to track and you can move the hour hand as you travel from place to place while the chronograph is running.
I guess I'm kinda slow. Can you give me a specific example - let's say I fly from NYC to LAX on a Monday, taking off at noon from NYC. How would I set my watch?
The timing is funny as I just today handled this exact Speedmaster Racing at an AD. I have to say that I was very impressed with the watch it's nicely done and to my suprise it wears much smaller than the 44.25mm would suggest.
As I keep adding pieces to the collection that are arguably better watches, the speedmaster still gets the most wrist time. IMO, the speedmaster is one of the absolute best watches you can own at any price point. And you can never just have one...
Shameless Omega plug.. but i dont mind since Omega is one of my go to brands.
3:35 the resolution of the stopwatch is not a fifth second, but a fourth second. The caliber has a frequency of 4 Hz, not 5 Hz. Each increment on the scale is 0.25s.
Sales must be slumping. New advert such as this to go along with the recent announcement of the Hodinkee pop up Omega shop in NY. I'm sure Omega is about to whip up yet another LE Speedmaster in the next few weeks
Have you guys ever seen the Deville tourbillon?
Loneliest man in the world is the Omega fan who also believes that the moon landing was fake.
@Christopher Wood -MDH- agreed. The earth is flat too...people forget that
Christopher Wood -MDH- Had it been fake, the Soviets would have been the firsts to provide the world with optical and radio evidence of the lack of presence of the Apollo mission throughout its journey.
Love the dial but the case size too big for my taste. Ideal would be 39-40mm.
Just get a Speedmaster Racing
Great video review! You should do more of these!
My finger moved at 175MPH to read the comments on this almost 5 min advertorial.
Finally someone mentioned it
Excellent video, but I am not convinced the Speedmaster has ever been designed to be used by the very person doing the running / driving / flying. The coach next to the track or the navigation guy would be in charge here.
Nice, really nice video combine the great Speedmaster watch and it's function 👍
Fantastic video.
I get that this was perhaps the intended purpose of the Speedmaster (or some other chronometer-equipped watch), but the reality is that no driver would risk operating their watch while driving on a track. It's a cute novelty idea, but the real world, nobody would do this 😘
Watches are novelties in 2019. Nearly all of the Rolex GMTs and submariners are never used for diving. The speedmaster is a great novelty
ua-cam.com/video/dPQ-N4ZVLdE/v-deo.html
Anthony Craig when these watches were originally designed, they most certainly, would have been used by drivers and pilots alike.
People aren't operating chronographs mid-corner, they do so as they cross the start/finish line which is usually in the middle of a long straight.
It's not really the risk that you say it is, since you don't need to look at your watch to press the buttons, but it is true that most people do not use them this way these days because of digital lap timers, or lap timers on their phones. However, some people do, as others have pointed out. For example, there is a guy (I will not say the name since I don't like to advertise on other channels) uses his watch to estimate the lap times of new and prototype cars driven by manufacturers at the nurburgring, and very effectively, I might add.
Well done Cole
Grrat video as always! 👍👍
I never understood how drivers would actually use a chronograph while driving. Seems very unpractical.
well back in the days during races they had people next to the track with chronographs measuring the lap times of the drivers.
@@rever-mi6qz but they had stopwatches in the form of pocket watches for that. Why would drivers need chronographs on their wrists?
@@lucioledizerot196 yes that's true, the drivers used the tachymeter also for calculating speeds in certain turns on the circuit
They used them in the past mostly to know how much time had elapsed. They had people outside with chronos. The watch was just for aesthetics and product placement.
Hodinkee: omeg
All: no waiting list
I would love to buy this watch. Costco usually has it in stock for 3500 but I can’t get over the crystal. It’s 2019, put a damn sapphire on it and I would buy it!
Hesitate is intended not to shatter and that makes a big difference in space where those pieces could float off in to important systems. They make models with sapphire if you prefer. For me, I'm ready to go when NASA calls.
Andrew Koehler iv never seen one with a sapphire on it. But 99.99% of people wearing it will never go to space so there is no excuse for putting a cheaper scratch magnet on a 5 thousand dollar watch.
@@XGiveMeLibertyX if you saw them side by side, the Hesalite gives a warmer color on the edge of the dial. I've had mine for 3 years and have never had a scratch I couldn't quickly buff out with poly watch. It's really not as big of a problem as it seems.
@@XGiveMeLibertyX If you gave me the sapphire version, I'd sell it to buy a Hesalite version. The dome is much nicer, and it's easily polished back to scratchless. Luckily they make both, so pick your poison.
I absolutely love the color scheme. I appreciate the automatic co-axial movement. And I don't mind the missing 3rd sub-dial. But the increase in case size and still only 50 meters of water resistance is a no-go for me. 42mm is as big as I'll go.
Do you go 51 meters deep with your chronographs?
Amazing
If you have time to use a tachimètre bezel in a race car you have too much time on your hand, which means you're too damn slow!
By the way great Omega and Porsche ad. And now, do we get a Hodinkee discount for a track day? Or will there be a 911 GT3 Hodinkee Edition for double the price? ;-)
The irony is that the Rolex Daytona was created to go to space.
It’s a failed Cosmograph, after all.
Wearing my MOTFM right now
I don't think it is that people do not know how a tachymeter works (after all, it is pretty straightforward). It is more that hardly anyone has a real world use for it. But that is fine. There is no need to use the tachymeter anymore than, for example, you need to go diving to use the bezel on a submariner. They are just part of the watch's history and iconic look. Not something that you need to get everyday use out of.
I use my diver’s bezel to track how much time I spend in the shower or how much the pasta has been left to boil. I also tracked how much time the bus took to bring me to my local train station, in order to know which one to jump on. I haven’t found other uses for now, but perhaps when I will go swimming in a couple of months, I will be knowing how much time I spent in the pool.
Enjoyable video.
So a five minute ad?
Awesome video
It's really nice, and thank you for saying "tachymeter" correctly.
This should have been release on Tuesday 😁
I'd have thought it was kph.
It's "units per hour". So if he had timed a 1km section of the track, the reading would have been in KPH
The tachymeter is unitless. If you measure the time to reach 1 mile, it gives you mph, if you measure the time to reach 1 km, it gives you km/h
If he would time 1 kilometer instead of 1 mile, he would got the speed in Kph. He could also time 100 meter and multiply the result by 10 and he would got kph too.
sorry, but it's km/h we're talking about here.. and not miles/h. It's factor 1,6 !! ..greetings from Zürich
The tackymeter shows unit over time (1/t). If you measure the time it takes the car to go from point A to point B and that distance happens to be 1mile, the result will be in miles/hour. If the distance is 1km => the result will be km/h. If you count eight elephants passing by in a certain unit of time the result will be (you guessed it) 1/8*(elephant/hour).
thank you for teaching me how to read/use my ROLEX 116520
You can read that Daytona? Most people cant..terrible legibility..Also why do you need to read it? It’s a poser’s watch for those who need to “compensate”
Why on earth would someone wearing a chrono on their wrist forget it exists or not know how to use it
....that the dial originated with the Rodania Geometer in 1954
super great content!
Very good video
Speedmaster so cool❤️ It doesnt looks safe thoo.
To be fair, it is the time that counts. Average speed over the distance say basically nothing about anything.
July 21st???
This is practically a dark side of the moon
The Rainbow Daytona is way better for racing. I had guys shooting at my car in South Africa as I was wearing it.
Narrated by John Mayer?
Want one, and the car...
So fascinating reading the comments to this video - all this arguing about who knows the most about watches and who owns the most expensive/rarest/best/whatever watches. Probably the reason some people get into watches in the first place.
Saying that everyone forgets that the Speedmaster was made for racing is like saying everyone forgets the Seamaster was made for the ocean. This is properly lowest common denominator journalism and frankly I expected more from Hodinkee.
Wish it had applied LOGO!
God what a nice video
Nice vid!
John Mayer?
The tachymetre is in kmh not mph
🤣🤣
Really??? The driver and the narrator explain how the tachymetre works but they don't even know what it is or what it's for😬🙊. They end up explaining the chronograph 🤣🤣🤣. That's embarrassing 🙊🙊
My fav speedmaster, the moonwatches are too small.
I love that they are small. Tiny and direct to the point. An honest companion I would carry around.
He said superlative? ;)
I don’t think this person knows what prolific means. Good quality video though
Omega should stop making HUGE watches..
And EVERYONE FORGETS that Omega FORGETS to pay credit to a little-known Swiss-Belgian watch company called Rodania and their 1954 Rodania Geometer. Design cues of the Geometer's dial/face is what being copied upon to the 1957 Omega Speedmaster reference 2915-1... Major horological companies should pay the well-deserved , proper credit to the little known companies they took (stole?) inspiration from...when its due.
Completely far fetched as others have said. I love the speedy; I've had one for years and it's my favourite watch but nobody buys it because they're a racing driver . . . . .
Better talk about ap or dubuis or rest
Did the moonlanding really happen?
Hasib Ahmadzai Only if you’re a quartz watch fan
Nice ad!
8k while i get a used one for 2k
We forget it was considered the NASA "company" watch while astronauts wanted to take their personal wristwatches aboard each mission, which is common practise nowadays !
Great and relable like an Audi while You really want to drive a Porsche...
This video was brought to you by.... OMEGA
Ridiculous product placement. By comparison my 2007 Speedmaster Broad Arrow offers an entire 100 meters waterresistance. Only 60 hours powerreserve seems a bit so-so in this age after Swatch introduced the Powermatic 80 back in 2013. The use of a racing chronograph itself is reserved for the co-driver, not the driver himself. In short, Omega, you can do much better!
@Dave Mendoza I got Omega watches that you are never going to own. PO Liquidmetal world premier from 2008. 50th anniversary Speedmaster Broad Arrow. PO Good Planet GMT - So back down Mendoza, you are out of your league, I run this show, not you!
@@Thomgxx100 Haha nice
@Dave Mendoza Did I mention my fake Noob Submariner? No? Pretty intimidating for guys like you who can't tell any difference. HA!HA!HA!
@Dave Mendoza just gtfo finally 😉
Omega needs to make Original Speedmaster professional sized automatic winding and stop fiddling with other BS models
another thing it won't improve is your grammar, apparently.
Finally bought my first omega speedmaster! Check out my unboxing on my channel.
