    Join Robert in a deserted car park, deep in the West of England, as he reviews the small and simple SEAT Mii. It has a range of 162 miles, is one of the cheapest electric cars on the market and it does everything you want a car to do. Full of gripping twists and turns - Robert’s lost, but then isn’t, the app and software doesn’t work, but then it does - it's a fun episode about a cool little car and a slightly confused man. It's not only a Western box, but also generational. A lot of younger western people today take a long time before they buy cars or houses. And increasingly many young people are opting to postpone or simply not buy a car because of the economics of it, and rather saving up for a first or better flat/house.

      I don't think people are afraid of it. I mean, my PC is dual-boot into windows and linux, my android is rooted, and there's loads of tech in the house. Which has a downside of being techsupport for all relatives over 50. However, I prefer my cars simple and tech-free. If my stereo supports A2DP, that's more than enough - my phone can do the rest. Maybe even better than built-in system, minus the fact built-in system would have advantage of access to ABS and steering wheel position sensor data. But then again, There are not that many tunnels in my area, so that is irrelevant for me.
      Unfortunately, too many car buyers are fallen for "it looks futuristic therefore it's cooler" approach. And that applies to both EVs and ICE cars. In reality, most of "tech" in cars is unnecessary.

    I like it but It's a shame that despite being the cheapest UK EV on the market It's still way above that initial price point that I think will drive mass adoption (I reckon about £15k) and when you compare the price of the e-miii at £19800 (after subsidy) with the original petrol version prices which started at £9900 it's difficult for most people to believe anything other than that the manufacturers are still charging a premium for EVs to discourage sales . I doubt people will factor in the savings they'll make vs petrol and will just see the headline price. Looks decent as a city runabout car but should be much, much cheaper...When are the major manufacturers going to wake up? or are they just hoping that the newer manufacturers like Tesla & Rivian will somehow softly and silenty vanish away...

    • @SteveWardOK
      @SteveWardOK 4 роки тому +34

      Robert discussed this in a recent video. I think it is clear that vehicle manufacturers ARE charging a premium for electric vehicles - the high price is not really justfied on a cost basis. However, vehicle manufacturers can argue that a) they have to recoup development costs, b) they may still be setting up their supply chain to get access to cheap batteries and c) they really want to sell the ICE vehicles that they know well and have patents for and have factories set up to produce. My hope is that over time prices will come down.

    • @arunparkin2552
      @arunparkin2552 4 роки тому +20

      Yes, they are very overpriced, and since city cars don't do many miles it's easier for most people to go and buy a small 15 year old petrol car which would cost £2000 at the most. Thankfully new cars have finance schemes and hopefully the Seat Mii Electric will become more affordable, but they will still be more expensive then the old petrol car. So here's an idea: manufacturers should start selling electric conversion kits for older cars, not classic cars (they need to be preserved), but old bangers so electric cars can be more affordable for DIY people.

    • @dennisrichards2540

I suppose for people who use automatic or just like to sit on the brake at the lights, blinding me behind them (a pet peeve of mine) it makes no difference, but I was taught to actually use the handbrake as part of my driving - hill starts and when traffic has stopped - and I still do that. I'm also first out of the gate on the occasions I want to sprint away from a junction since I actually know how to balance clutch and accelerator while releasing the handbrake (still burning the dinosaurs for now - too much life left in my lovely little car and EVs still stupidly expensive).

    This is what electric cars should be - small, effective, efficient and fun to drive. We need to get rid of this ridiculous idea that "good cars" have to travel at "ludicrous" and extreme speeds and accelerate at crazy rates. Most of our ideas about cars focus on performance - whereas utility, efficiency and environmental impact should be how we judge cars. A small car like the Seat Mii ticks the truly important boxes rather then the archaic "so 20th century" benchmarks that seem to fascinate the car industry. Thank you for a fun and informative car review! Keep up the excellent and informative work.

    I’ve watched these small city cars videos. I’m currently driving (when I have to) a car that bought for my mom, by my dad, but she hasn’t driven in like forever. And I’m driving it.
    It’s a Yaris. A Toyota Yaris. This car is amazing. Lots of room. Super reliable. Really lots of room, a ton of space to place absolutely anything in it. It’s like a little transformer. It has cubbies and pockets and whatnot. It’s freaking amazing. It’s also... super cheap. Both to run and to maintain. It’s a Yaris 2011 hatch, 4 doors. Or 5? Dunno what the proper term is.
    Anyway.. what I’m thinking is this: WHY, and I mean really... WHY no one does exactly THIS Yaris but electric? It would kill these little bugs. It’s a bit bigger, but not much, it has sooo much space it’s crazy. It drives exetremely well in the city, it CAN handle longer trips as well. WHY no one makes it electric?! :(
    That’s it.

    2:40 Unless Seat have glued the boot floor in place for UK models, Robert hasn't realised he's got it at its highest level! It drops down lower (6 ins at least) and there's still space for charging cables underneath as well. Should be space for several loaves of bread and at least 2 bags of carrots. As there's no options except colour on the Seat UK website, I'm guessing that's standard, not a £75 extra as with E-UP. (Nobody mention that Johnny would have noticed that).

    Re: boot space, I used to have a (petrol) up!. That had a variable height boot floor and it looks like the Mii does too, with the video showing it in the raised position. I know the charging cables take up some volume, but I used to have the floor in the raised position with emergency kit (warning triangle, tyre pump etc) underneath and still have enough room on top for a couple of bags of shopping, with the lower floor position available if I needed to squeeze some more in.
    Generally an excellent video as usual though and it's great to see smaller, simpler cars like the Mii starting to only be available in electric form and bringing down the prices of EVs.

    Love the review. Few points as an owner. Yes, it's great fun to drive. I can see why you are smiling Robert. The boot - you haven't dropped down the false bottom - it fits at least 4 large shopping bags and more with ease (and has a great pocket for the cable. Range - UK winter - can only manage 60-70 miles max. Yes I know driving styles etc matter. - I'm no racer. Apps - the Drive Mii app, as you found is flaky but otherwise OK. The Connect app - UK users currently unable to register fully to use it. No fix in sight. And everyones favourite bug - the heating defaults back to 22 degrees each time you start up. Finally charging - it charges at 16amp/3.6KW on UK home chargers. There is supposed to be a software fix but little evidence that it has worked yet - didn't for me. Despite this, we love it as a local run around - just would love to be able to do closer to those claimed 160 miles.

    I agree 100% with this video Robert. I live in a country where Seat doesn't sell the Mii, but Skoda is selling the counterpart named Citigo. Basically the same car and it costs ~20000 euros, base model. The biggest thing here (Romania) is that we have the highest government grant in EU (10000 euros), so you can imagine people are fighting over them. Unfortunately, Skoda has allocated only 100 (yes, you read it correctly) for year 2020, but then, when it saw how big the request is, they upped that number. I think this car is fantastic and it is PERFECT for city. Absolutely spot on and at ~10000 euros with the help from govnmt, it is even cheaper than the petrol one.
    It is sad that VW added so much software and electronics in the ID3 instead of going with the same recipe and launch Golf 8 electric with a lower price (say 30000 euros and same range as ID3). I think they wouldn't have had the same problems with the software and it would have sold much better than the ID3 which, frankly looks a bit ugly and unnecessarily futuristic. But that is just my opinion. Frankly, VW can keep improving the e-UP and it will sell like it is today even in 2030.

    Like it like it - I think I would call the weird overlay a "Dash toupee". Thanks for the review! Amazingly familiar simplicity mostly as found in my used $5000 Fiat 500e I drive around in Northern California - regular key, normal parking brake, beepers but no reverse camera though so small - easy to park. An improvement with an actual shift lever vs the silly gear select push buttons on the dash. When we can eventually get back to our flat in the UK will be looking to replace the old reliable 2012 Citroen C4 diesel with something like this!

    I love the channel and the real life viewpoint that is attached to the car reviews. One criticism is that if you are doing a review of a car, then it is important to have the stats and the info all to hand and included. We need to know what the eco modes are supposed to do and what the impact is on using them as its potentially key info. Anyways, that aside, love the channel, love the style its presented in and it is my initial "go to" place for EV related items (and the household use of batteries/solar). Looking forward to the battery upgrade in the Leaf when it gets done - although I can't see it being economically viable in a Leaf of that age!

    I have to be honest with you, the first few minutes of this review didn't really sell it to me. But THEN...as the seconds and minutes ticked on...and the review continued...I have to admit...I er...I still wasn't sold on it. That pub you had charger trouble at was the first charger I ever used. I'm from Manchester and I went down to Bristol to collect the car, a horrendous stormy day, and after a test drive and a drive around Bristol looking for dinner I headed to IKEA for a charge before hitting the motorway. The Ecotricity charger at IKEA didn't work. So I put another into the sat nav and arrived to find a building site... No charger.
    Things were beginning to get desperate, I arrived at that pub with 2 miles range remaining and was very happy to go in and warm up by their open fire as I'd long since turned the heater off to get more range! That charger worked fine for me in early February.
    I've since learned not to rely on Ecotricity if there's any other option.

    Petrol Mii was my first car :) I really liked it. But 1L 60hp engine was not really enough for some hills in my area. So I swapped it for 105hp Ibiza.
    I really like that they switched to the app instead of "integrated standalone satnav" So much better and longer lasting solution.
    I also like that they did away with light grey interior. I'm not an office worker, so interior that doesn't need deep clean every month is quite a nice feature.
    Another thing to add. While Mii is small, it doesn't feel like this on the inside! In fact, when I gave my left my current car with the dealership for MoT, they gave me Mii as courtesy car, and it felt like driving a bus, lol. Visibility is amaizing. Also, with good packing skills, that boot is rather OK.
